- This interview is part of Good Morning, Mont Blanc. This is the inaugural year of Freetrail’s daily morning show, kicking off with the 20th anniversary of the Ultra Trail Mont Blanc (UTMB), the most important global event in the sport of trail running. The show is hosted each day by professional athlete, Dylan Bowman. Every afternoon, Dylan interviews top athletes and favorites for the races.
Dylan talks to Zach about his incredible second place finish at the 2023 UTMB. Zach finished just under 20 hours and ran the entire race with his signature gusto. We were blown away by his performance and so eager to hear him recount the race from his perspective. We hope you enjoy!

Great interview. Dylan I am sure I am not even close to the first person to say you are awesome at interviewing and calling a race. I am new to trail running and couldn’t turn off the western race. Please please please continue to do these 30 post race interviews. It would be really cool to ad video of the race during the interview.

UTMB 2022: Zach is sprinting to the finish line because a runner is less than a minute behind him.
UTMB 2023: Zach is sprinting to the finish line for that sub-20 hour finish time.

There are just a handful of ultra runners that have the heart of a lion and a heart of gold. Zach is at the top of my list. Win or loose you always give it your all and stay humble. A great inspiration to anyone going through tough challenges.

The vert focus (that was also true for Jim) came mainly from François d'Haene as a general advice for the US trail runners and it's not a big surprise, it just works. Really happy for both of them to make 1st and 2nd this year.
