I am turning 18 tomorrow and I have decided to buy the Henry single shot in 308. It is not to expensive and here in Indiana I’m never shooting more than 200 yards. The single shot I also believe make me more accurate because I need to have a great shot.
Personally i wouldnt do that… look at bolt guns… you will be much happier with even like a ruger american, howa 1500, tikka, cva cascade ect. If you want the wood you can find a boyds wood stock onsale for around $150
Thank you guys for all your videos, I turned 18 a couple months ago and bought my first rifle. It is a Howa 1500 in .308 Winchester with a Nikko Sterling 4-9x. I plan to buy a better scope for it for next deer season. Thank you guys again for the videos.
I have this Howa 1500 HCR with the same scope in a 4-16 I’m actually surprised with the quality of it i expected to want to change it right away but it’s doing great out to 500 yards with the 6.5
That's what I got but it was mainly because it came in 308 and it was a pretty good deal because it was the 1500 action in a $500 stock for $550 so I kind of made out with that one
At 7:50. I 100% agree and think people should really really listen to that point about sighting in your new rifle build or just new rifle before you get to the field. It’s happened to me once and plenty of times to people I know that while sighting in a new rifle or a rifle with new bottom metal or magazines, they shot single feeding rounds at the range just to find out on game day that they have feeding issues. Could be something simple as mag feed lips needing adjustment or something much bigger. Always shoot the way you plan to hunt. Great advice!
I bought a Bergara 6.5 creedmoor. They put the eotech vudu 3.5-18 on and bore sighted it in. I took it to the range, put 3 rounds through it to confirm the zero. It did the job!
Still a great pump gun even though it is mostly plastic, th-cam.com/users/postUgkxh4su9YgU1tWmjikirWcKJbjsFLEU62Bc but with care it will last a long time. It would be neat if Crosman would make a commemorative version of this with real wood stock, but of course it would weigh more and cost more, but hey, it would be cool. The included scope is more of a toy, but it does work for backyard plinking. I prefer to use pellets for greater accuracy, but BBs are just as good for plinking. This is not a Red Ryder folks; fully pumped it is 3 times the power of a Red Ryder and can be dangerous if not handled properly. Be safe out there.
I really enjoy building as well as being out in the outdoors. That said I use a AR10 in 6.5 with a BSF carbon barrel. And carbon and titanium hardware. It's been with me for 7 years now and I still love the looks and the confidence it gives. I enjoy your vids. Keep up the work
This video is spot on. Bought rifle check, scope and rings check, ammo check, and it’s all out together at the store….flop. There is so much more to do with your hunting rifle like making sure the scope is mounted properly for proper eye relief. That’s a whole video itself. Then there is length of pull correction for fit. Then there is the ammo that your rifle likes. Oh and btw, when you went out the shoot it the rifle gives you scope bight damage or kicks you so hard you say heck no I’m not hunting with this rifle. There’s lots to consider and fit to the hunter. Not to mention the range time for practice. If I knew back then what I know now I’d never buy a “mountain light” rifle. Lots to consider. My approach years down the road are much different than when I first got into hunting. I consider so much more than just buying a rifle off the shelf. Thanks for the awesome video! 😃👍🏻
In my Leuopold VX6, it has a fire dot reticle. One of the features is the level feature. If you are not holding your rifle level, it blinks at you. Really cool as your eye does not have to leave the sight picture to look at an exterior bubble level.
When I got into shooting, I bought Athlon optics because they were less expensive. I have much better optical quality scopes that are lighter now. But the Athlon Talos BTR 1-4x24 is a great scope that I still use from time to time to this day. They’re a bit heavy, but durable. You can buy that scope today 01/24/2023 for $175. Nitrogen purged, illuminated, and true one power. That’s a great deal.
Awesome vid. I have seen people glow about zeroing a rifle with a sled and then "fine tune in the field." I cannot do that. I have to zero the rifle to my shoulder. I am not going to be hunting on public land which is very much like back country in some cases, with a table and a lead sled. It's going to be my shoulder. So, adjust to my shoulder and whatever rest. I hunt with a tripod but I can also use a tree branch or do the Jeff Cooper thing and brace my off hand against a tree trunk. The only way to ensure the same MV every time is to hand load and match all the slug weights to a fraction of an ounce and match the powder weights to a fraction of a fraction of an ounce. Outside of that, you are going to vary by as much as 20 fps. Live with it. By the time you go through a box of 20 that hopefully came from the same lot, you will not have that lot any more. So, I practice a lot. Which means I manage recoil so that I don't get a flinch. Pachmayr slip-on, muzzle brake, earphones. And I found a commercial made ammo that is giving me 1/2 MOA from my rifle. So, I have followed the good advice here. Pick a rifle with a scope that you can use that gets you sub MOA accuracy with a particular cartridge and practice. That way, on the stalk or in a stand, you don't have to think of any of that. Point and shoot.
Decent. But man, I promise you that a FFP scope with a little more magnification and illumination will change shooting. It's like going from a pager to a smartphone.... or some other analogy that fits better.
@@skys-the-limit I have been looking at new scopes its just I dont know what would be better for me, Im in east alberta and sometimes I travel more up north to the rocky mountains
I'd like to have one of these carbon fiber stocks and barrels, but I know my A-BOLT in 7mm-08 shoots .75 and better at 100 yards. I'd like to throw a new Arken scope on it, the new lightweight one.
Great video. You are always a wealth of knowledge. I would love to see you take a single rifle and see you do a deep dive and do the whole build process from start to finish. I could see you even do a deep dive on each of the 7 steps. Thanks for sharing. Happy Holidays.
a hunter, if occasional, my whole, and the first time i have ever even heard the phrases, first focal plane and second focal plane in the context of talking about scopes and rifles. Thus, I must educate some more! 😅 Yes and indeed that is one of the reasons i watch the channel, to learn anew!
Jim, Great vid on picking a primary back country rifle. I have a late model Winchester Model 70 in 300 Win Mag as my primary gun. Sig Sauer 4-16 scope, first focal plane in MOA, a good muzzle brake and a 2 1/2 lb trigger. I love it but I was thinking about a back up gun for next years elk hunt. I have a Winchester Model 54 in 35 Whelen with a Leupold 3-9 scope. I was thinking about changing the scope out to maybe a SWFA 4-16, FFP in MOA but my real challenge is max range. I have some reloaded 180 Barnes copper rounds that have been chronographed at 2980 fps and I would probably have no problem going to as much as 400 yards with this set up but my 300 Win Mag is a consistent 3-5 inch group at 500+ and where I hunt in AZ that could easily be the shot I have to take. I am thinking that if I could find a 35 cal. round with a boat tail to increase the BC maybe the old girl could be stretched out to 450-500 yards, but I can only find flat tailed bullets. Do you know of anyone that makes boat tail 35 slug, and is this a good plan? Thanks again and I love your TH-cam videos!!!

@Backfire Just curious, have you ever tried out or done a video on the Seekins Havak line of rifles. Specifically the Element or the PH2? I hear amazing reviews of them from social media groups but was wondering your opinion?
Hey Jim I have been researching trying to find the ultimate backcountry elk rifle. I am leaning towards the Bergara MGLite and the Fierce MNT Reaper in 7 prc. The Fierce is available in 20 inch barrel but the Bergara might have better QC. Would it be possible to see a head to head comparison on these two rifles. A 1° cant at 500 yards is 1 inch when shooting 308. 1 degree of cant will only be a major factor at 1000 yards or so. Even a 5° cant will only cause 1" of error at 300 yards.
On your website u prefer the leupold vx3 in the 800 range but in the more expensive category u prefer the LHT over the VX5 y is that looking at these two scopes for a tikka 7mm
Great video and information. I have had a R700 XCR in 300 wsm with an absolutely horrible stock. In your opinion what is the best all around budget friendly stock option for a 300 WSM that will see everything from whitetail stand hunting in the south to elk trips in Colorado? I have a magpul hunter on a 308 as well and like it but it’s pretty heavy so interested in other options before commuting to what I know.
Right. That’s what I mean. I frequently hear people thinking that a “ bore sight” is like a magical scientific sighting in that is super accurate. Yikes.
Jim, thanks for the content, I always enjoy it. I would like to add an ARCA rail and QD cups to my Ruger American. Is that something I can do or should I take it down to my gun smith?
I love that you addressed you don’t have to spend over $1000 on a scope for it to be reliable. There is plenty of scopes under $500 and even under $300 that will do everything you need to do AFFORDABLY!!!
I have a question...when I site a Scoped Rifle does it make any difference to site at or near as possible the elevation you will be hunting in? My elevation where I would site a rifle(near my house) is around 2,000 feet, but where I hunt typically is around 6 to 8,000 feet. Should I site at the elevation where I will hunt or does it not matter?
Hey backfire and hunters! I have a hunting rifle question. I’m looking at getting a 300 win mag hunting rifle and was looking at the Bergara B14 ridge and tikka t3x roughtech options. Can you please review the sauer 100 🥺
On your website u prefer the leupold vx3 in the 800 range but in the more expensive category u prefer the LHT over the VX5 y is that looking at these two scopes for a tikka 7mm
You should review the Benelux lupo
Question. Does springfield count the muzzle break as part of barrel length on their waypoint rifles?
So, according to your sight an extra pound would reduce a 300 win mag from 29 to 21
Lbs of recoil?
A video about the best chronograph would be interesting.
What is the rifle that was on the table for most of the video? Looks like a Bergara ridge carbon?
Great video and information. I have had a R700 XCR in 300 wsm with an absolutely horrible stock. In your opinion what is the best all around budget friendly stock option for a 300 WSM that will see everything from whitetail stand hunting in the south to elk trips in Colorado? I have a magpul hunter on a 308 as well and like it but it’s pretty heavy so interested in other options before commuting to what I know.
I have never heard of a store/shop offering to sight in a rifle. Bore sight yes. Hopefully they know the difference.
Great Video like always! Want to put Arca rail on my Browning X Bolt speed , or go with hog grip ? Thanks
Can you please tell me what rifle you have on display for the first part of this video?
Happy New year Jim !
Enjoy your content
Are you planning on reviewing Bennelli Lupo or CZ 600 rifles ?
Thoughts on tikka triggers? Worth the upgrade to the 2 stage timney? I have only every shot single stage triggers.
I love that you addressed you don’t have to spend over $1000 on a scope for it to be reliable. There is plenty of scopes under $500 and even under $300 that will do everything you need to do AFFORDABLY!!!
just curious why you keep the "pie plate accuracy" rifle
I have a question...when I site a Scoped Rifle does it make any difference to site at or near as possible the elevation you will be hunting in? My elevation where I would site a rifle(near my house) is around 2,000 feet, but where I hunt typically is around 6 to 8,000 feet. Should I site at the elevation where I will hunt or does it not matter?
Air density differs at altitude, so there will be less drop with lower density air. How much I'm not sure.
What is the make and model of the gun that was on the table?
Hey mate, what is the sling on the rifle ?
What is the perfect weight of a huntig rifle for 30.06 without scope? 8.5lbs or 7lbs?
Does he ever say what gun he is displaying this whole episode?
O wow you brought up a product I really need socks lots of socks in bulk if possible lol
The first gun you picked up an that has carbon fiber what brand an caliber is it?
Sako s20 300 win mag w/ factory Norma 180gr bondstrike w/ vx5 scope
That's a nice set-up. Ready for anything.
what is that gun he picked up first
Hey backfire and hunters! I have a hunting rifle question. I’m looking at getting a 300 win mag hunting rifle and was looking at the Bergara B14 ridge and tikka t3x roughtech options. Do you have an opinion as to which would be better? I’ll be doing a little backcountry moose, and then just whitetail hunting. Thanks!
I’d go with the Bergara ridge. Great gun but a little heavy so it’d be perfect in 300 win mag.
What sling are you using on that rifle?
Great information thanks
With all the tripods in the world, you use your wife... 😂
What sling are you running on this set up
i’m going mule deer hunting and i just don’t understand how to dial my scope for different ranges. please help!
