Let's take a moment to appreciate that he cut through that plastic without cutting the fabric underneath. That's a very unnoticed skill that probably was the most difficult to master. Although how you put mother-of-pearl on fabric and make it stick and flex is far beyond my comprehension. That's some straight-up magic.

I was born in Japan, we left there was I was 3. My mom bought a lot of Japanese furniture & art there. She even bought me & my sister kimonos, I am 64 & still have mine and watching this video makes appreciate it so much more. Japanese have always been great artists.
I had no idea that kimonos were made like this. I thought it was made with a few passes of ink, like silk screen printing. This is far more detailed than I had imagined and far more beautiful. This is art. Full respect.
@@lifeby2044 Well, that was either ignorant or racist. Kimonos are Japanese, not Chinese. And, since I've never watched a Chinese movie, your opinion is irrelevant.

The Olympic Games Kimono Project started in 2017, and finished in 2021, has produced 213 kimonos from participating countries worth approximately 2 million Yen or roughly $13.500 each.
All I can say is wow.. I have no other words, just WOW.. When you see a kimono or this kind of fabric, you immediately know that there must have been an immense process behind it, but I don't think you truly realize just how immense until you actually see it like this. It's amazing.
That was just a cover for a pillow and the material used must have cost a fortune. When I think about the size of a kimono... To the ladies and gentlemen, I have the utmost admiration and respect. Every piece that is made in this factory is a masterpiece and unique and one of a kind in the world. If two identical kimonos are ever made, they will differ in detail and are therefore unique pieces. Never put on and wear such a kimono! Display it in a display case behind bulletproof glass? YES!!!
This was so lovely to watch. As a wearer of Kimono I an appreciate such beautiful craftmanship .I don't have one as beautiful and stunning as these. Thankyou for such a special treat and sharing your skills with us all
This video is absolutely mesmerizing The craftmanship is exquisite and very precise. I have seen a few kimonos in my time but this was absolutely amazing to watch. I did not realize that the fabrics were actually hand painted right from the beginning The attention to detail is amazing and i am sure everything in these designs has a meaning to it a story as such of why the specific flowers and cranes are used in each design. It is stunning. I am sure the price reflects the attention to detail too. but well worth it.
I never know where my middle of the night you tube videos will take me. I've gone from cat vids to auctioneering school to rug cleaning. Tonight it was cat vids (I seem to start there since I'm a cat person) to quilting (since I do that) to Sashiko embroidery to this. I knew it was pretty involved and that's why some kimonos are SO expensive. Now I know why. These artisans are amazing.
The wonderful thing about the Japanese is their attitude toward any masters...they are held with respect and cared for. Whether silk, pottery, sumi-e, metal works, paper making, all are in the care and support of the Japanese...government and people.
