You made a Jack and king stud. The shorter stud is the Jack Stud the header sits on top of the Jack studs. The king Stud is the full height of your framing that’s minus you 1.5” sill plate and (2) 1.5” x 2= 3” top plates! You subtract 4.5 in from the total height of your 9Ft tall walls 9x12= 108” - 4.5” = 103.5 for all the framing studs and the king studs. The Jack stud is the height of the bottom of the header. 80” also Refered as 6’ 8” doors + the jamb thickness typically 1.5” + 80” = 81.5” + 1/4” that’s 81.75 or 81 3/4” bottom of the header that’s also the height of the Jack stud! Exterior walls required headers that minimum of 3.5” x 3.5” AKA 4x4 or (2) 2x4 studs nailed together, for a 36 wide exterior wall door and ALL Windows. 48” Wide windows require 4x6 headers. Up to 6Ft wide. Wider windows require two by eights or two by tens, nailed together which are 3” thick. Always check with your local building and safety ! For interior walls with doors that are loadbearing it’s illegal to only install one 2x4 for header. You need a minimum of a 4 x 4 or 4 x 6 again check with your local building and safety.
Hey, appreciate the video. What's your stud size on a 8ft wall? And would you recommend using a bottom plate underneath the header as some joiners don't bother. Header goes straight onto the jack.
Hey Camocutie! I as waiting for floor joists to be delivered so I pre build these items while I was waiting. I try you cut down on down time. Good catch! Thanks for watching and stay tuned!

If you need to use 2 jack studs and 2 king studs is it best to nail both sides of the jack studs together?
are these continuous jack studs or split jack studs?
