The OG crew. My favorite panel. So we are getting all the 2010s years with this panel ? AMAZING! I can't wait to see 2014/2015, 2016/2017 and concluding in 2018/2019 I realise there are a lot of movies that I haven't watched from these years so I think I'll note some down from these discussions/videos and watch some during the break
The movie that I feel they really missed in these two years was Moonrise Kingdom from 2012. It's my favorite Wes Anderson movie and is endlessly rewatchable. Also, special shout out to my favorite Laika movie, which also came out in the same year, ParaNorman.
ParaNorman is criminally underrated. I love the tonal shift in it halfway through. The animation. It is sad and beautiful, but also funny. And it had the first openly non-straight character in a mainstream kids' animated film (that I'm aware of) and it was very casual about it, didn't make it a big deal, and meant a lot to me.
My picks: 2012: 1. The Master 2. Moonrise Kingdom 3. Django Unchained 4. Beasts of the Southern Wild 5. The Avengers 2013: 1. Short Term 12 2. Under the Skin 3. The Wolf of Wall Street 4. Ida 5. Snowpiercer
My top 5 from these years: 2012- The Dark Knight Rises, Skyfall, Cloud Atlas, Silver Linings Playbook, Django Unchained. 2013- 12 Years a Slave, Prisoners, The Hunt, Mud, The Place Beyond the Pines.
OMG, YES ROTH! *Searching for Sugarman* is my favourite biographical doc and my favourite music doc. The story of Sixtho Rodriguez, is one of those stories I'd never believe if it weren't true. And his music! So good! I recommend this doc to anyone and everyone.
Thank you everyone at screen junkies enter...fandom entertainment! You bring me and a whole lot of people joy everyday! Please keep up the good work! Enjoy your well deserved break and see you in the new year!
The Avengers started the whole cinematic universe story but after repeat viewing it doesn't hold up like other marvel movies (winter soldier, GOTG, Endgame and Infinity War). For 2012- it's a three way tie for me - Skyfall, Django and Silver lining playbook. For 2013- Gravity and HER
I have been asking Dan( through fan question friday)to explain his comment of why he thinks the world's end is best of the trilogy. He finally answered 2 years later unpromted 😅😅🥂😞
2012: The Avengers, The Raid: Redemption, The Perks of Being A Wallflower, Looper, Django Unchained, The Grey, Moonrise Kingdom 2013: 12 Years A Slave, Wolf of Wall Street, Her, Fruitvale Station, Spring Breakers, The Spectacular Now, Short Term 12, Inside Llewyn Davis, This Is The End, The Wolverine, Gravity
I love superhero movies and always have. I was twelve years old when The Avengers came out in 2012 and it was mind blowing. I was not fortunate enough to see it in theatres, but I saw the future Avengers movies in theatres. Wreck it Ralph also came out in 2012 when I was twelve and as a bullied and lonely child I really connected to it. As for 2013, Frozen is a good movie even if the songs quickly became over played. I wish that such a strong and cool princess existed when I was little. Of course, the Iron Man trilogy came to a close which was bittersweet. It was not the best movie but I still really liked it. And to this day I still love Warm Bodies and that came out in 2013.
My favorites(in no particular order) 2012: The Avengers(duh), Looper, Django Unchained, Wreck-it-Ralph. 2013: Her, Fruitville Station,12 Years a Slave, Gravity.
2012 blew me by the radar mainly for three major films- THE RAID, PARANORMAN, and TED. Still watch them repeatedly to this day! INTOUCHABLES, HITCHCOCK, MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS, and BRAVE all surprised me to some extent too. 2013 wasn't quite as legendary but MONSTERS UNIVERSITY, DON JON, PURGE 1, and even THE BUTLER, 12 YEARS A SLAVE, WALTER MITTY, ELYSIUM, and PHILOMENA were some strong entries too.
I just finished watching the documentary searching for sugar man on Netflix. Thank you Roth for introducing me to this incredible documentary, music and man. I didn't watch the trailer for it, so I went in blind. There were twists and great surprises.
Thank you for talking about Dredd. Such an underappreciated film. Tight focus, great translations of the comic book style characterisations, beautiful in its ugly grimy worldbuilding. Alex Garland has penned the script for so many of my favourite films of the past two decades. Still my favourite R rated comic book film of the 2010s.
Glad to see some love for Seven Psychopaths. Definitely one of my favorites from that year - perhaps only topped by Looper for me. For 2013, a super underrated film: The Way, Way Back.
Excellent list of movies I love (points to Roth for mentioning Seven Psychopaths!) and am trying to see before doing my decade list. I did want to add a few not mentioned though. Some more movies I love: 2012- Looper Moonrise Kingdom The Pirates in an Adventure with Scientists! ParaNorman Robot and Frank Mirror Mirror Safety Not Guarantee 2013- John Dies at the End Frances Ha The Heat V/H/S 2 Gravity Pacific Rim Much Ado About Nothing Have fun on break!
Shocked to hear *Wolf of Wall Street* not mentioned once, but that's honestly okay cuz it was my #16 of 2013 (8/10; there were a lot of great films that year). But I was really happy you chose *Inside Llewyn Davis*, Roth, because I feel it gets overlooked. Not only is it my favorite Coen Bros. movie, it's one of my all time favorite movies in general. Admittedly, it was my introduction to Coen Bros. I love the color grading and texture in it. Carey Mulligan and Adam Driver are amazing in this. The music is incredible and turned me on to folk music (I loved it so much, I bought a physical copy of the album). Most of all Oscar Isaac gives one of his best performances in this, if not his very best, imo. He instantly became one of my favorite actors because of this film. This was one of those movies that really had a profound effect on me, and really broadened my taste in film and music. *Her* is also amazing. It's right behind ILD on my 2013 List. Other movies you didn't cover from this year that I loved: Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Gravity, Blue Jasmine, Nebraska, and Philomena.
Definitely also a big fan of The Avengers, Django Unchained, Dredd, The World's End, Under the Skin and Snowpiercer. Some of my personal favorites not discussed in this video: 2012: Moonrise Kingdom ( Which I just got on Criterion Blu-ray), Wreck It Ralph, Looper, and 21 Jump Street 2013: The Hunt, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Prisoners I'm surprised Dan didn't want to talk about Skyfall considering how much of a huge Bond fan he is, but anyway looking forward to the rest of the videos in this series!
As if I didn't like Dan enough, he goes and picks Karl Urban's Dredd as one of his favourites. Being a long-time Judge Dredd fan, I was glad to see an accurate representation of Joe Dredd on the big screen. 🔔🎁Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.🎄🔔
Short Term 12 is probably one of my movies of the decade. I know you folks mention it briefly, but I wish someone would have talked about it at length. Just this tiny budgeted film released into the void... with trailers that don't exactly make it seem like it would stand apart from a typical indie, though it does. And while I'm not going to say it doesn't capitalize on some level of sentimentality, it does so without disrespecting its characters... particularly the children and the relationship between the two protagonists. On top of that, you have all of these great performances, some of which helped elevate so many people's careers.
*How to make a Tarantino movie:* Act 1: I'm too sexy for Milan, New York, and Japan. Act 2: Everybody cut footloose! Act 3: Let the bodies hit the floor!!
I'm with Dan on the cornetto trilogy, the cornetto trilogy has a lot to offer. Shaun of dead is maybe the funniest, and the most accurate depiction of how a zombie apocalypse would play out in my opinion. Hot Fuzz is very in line with my sensibilities and is probably the best script, and is probably where Wright was able to get his action style together. But World's End is the best movie. In my opinion of Edgar Wright's entire canon. I love all his movies, and he definitely doesn't get the attention as an action director he deserves. If you haven't watched it, please do, or not, do what you feel.
I did the same as Dan with Parasite and also spent most of the movie trying to figure out what kind of movie it was. I thought it was maybe horror going in, then comedy, drama, crime, thriller, and it kind of is all of those as it goes along. That was definitely good movie to go into completely blind.
i was gonna say something about the fact that you guys talking about her without mentioning sofia coppola & spike jonze's past and sofia's lost in translation. i think it's fascinating angle to add to the conversation.
The biggest crime the channel commits on anything resembling a frequent basis is shitting on The Dark Knight Rises, which came out in 2012. 2012: The Avengers literally changed blockbuster cinema. Zero Dark Thirty. Moonrise Kingdom. 2013: Wolf of Wall st, Short Term 12, Prisoners, Gravity, This is the End
To piggy back on Tarantino. If you haven't seen it yet a Whilhem Scream is one of the first pieces of audio in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and it's awesome!
No comment on Hunger Games Catching Fire?? It's actually a really good movie with great emotional moments and characters you understand, with some good action set pieces. The best in the franchise IMO
Have people turned on Gravity? That was one of the best theater experiences I've ever had. That was a phenomenon in 2013 and it appears to have not even been mentioned here.
is there a list of the movies you talk about so later - when I don't remember which one I saw something that sounded interesting and now don't remember what fucking year it was or the exact name - I can go look for it? ...
2012 has soooo many good movies, but if I had to pick a top 2 I would say The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Django Unchained. For 2013 I would say Prisoners and Her.
Holy shit, 2014 is going to be hard as hell now that I'm looking ahead, but for 2012 & 2013 I'm going with this, I guess. 2012: Moonrise Kingdom; Argo 2013: Her; Stoker
By 2013, so Roth is just forgetting that Oscar Isaac was in Drive (2011) and The Bourne Legacy (2012), and her suggested movie that is probably not as known is supposed to be his breakthrough role? Only in regards to his acting skills I would guess, maybe just the US, I'm not from the US, I've never heard of it..
Other movies 2012: The Grey, End of Watch, Looper, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Silver Linings Playbook, and Wolf Children Other movies 2013: Riddick, The Garden of Words, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Prisoners
Snowpiercer is a critique of capitalism. You have to know that to fully get the movie. And it is an awesome action flick where a bearded captain america fights storm troopers in the dark.
So we are going to get 4 one hour episodes of the original quartet discussing movies? Christmas miracle! :)

Watching for the nostalgia.
The Avengers started the whole cinematic universe story but after repeat viewing it doesn't hold up like other marvel movies (winter soldier, GOTG, Endgame and Infinity War).

I have been asking Dan( through fan question friday)to explain his comment of why he thinks the world's end is best of the trilogy. He finally answered 2 years later unpromted 😅😅🥂😞
I love The World's End
My favourite 2012 movie was “the perks of being a wallflower”
yes.. that was a more 'focused" episode..
Perfectly timed to make and eat dinner by the way. Well done.
I love Inside Llewyn Davis! My favorite of 2013
I love the fact that you mentioned Beast of the southern wild, rewatched about a month ago and now it's one of my favorite movies of the decade.
at 14:01 Dan goes to another planet.
2012: The Avengers, The Raid: Redemption, The Perks of Being A Wallflower, Looper, Django Unchained, The Grey, Moonrise Kingdom
2013: 12 Years A Slave, Wolf of Wall Street, Her, Fruitvale Station, Spring Breakers, The Spectacular Now, Short Term 12, Inside Llewyn Davis, This Is The End, The Wolverine, Gravity
Bah! How did I forget Perks of Being a Wallflower!?! I loved that one.
Snowpiercer definitely came out in Asia in 2013. I remember seeing it in theater before Christmas.

One of my favorite movies from 2012, which is very much a time capsule, was God Bless America, directed by Bobcat Goldthwait.
Oh I will definitely expect to hear about Spenny’s new take on Her when y’all get back.

Her sounds really good...I am gonna go watch that right now!
It's a tragedy how little recognition Dredd got!! It was such a great action/comic book movie!!!

2013-

I absolutely loved Her
The biggest crime the channel commits on anything resembling a frequent basis is shitting on The Dark Knight Rises, which came out in 2012. It got great reviews and most audiences really liked it too. Don't buy into this strange, budding narrative you hear on this channel and others that it was a dud. It's great.
Thank you for giving TDKRISES some love.
I disagree about Dan’s analysis of Hot Fuzz
It’s about deconstructing action films where it’s no longer focused on gratuitous “badass” violence but reclaimed for proper policing emphasising procedures, paperwork, and nonlethal methods
It’s poignant how every single community member involved in the systematic murders was alive & kicking for arrest & processing, despite their epic shoot-outs and the criminals willingness to use deadly force against the officers
Everything was done by the book and still was amazing
The police were the heroes and they in turn actually behaved heroically for the betterment of communities
And I appreciate that the message of the film only aged better and with greater relevance since it’s initial release, a lesson we need more than ever
