    This is the best way I've ever learned to read music! I "can" read music but only if I sit down and take my time remembering all the note places. I've played guitar for 16 years and gave up on reading music because it would never click on where the notes were. I mean, you don't really need to read music to play guitar. I picked up a violin last week and have followed your lessons here and wow.
    It's so easily clicking in my head what the notes on the sheet are saying to what strings and finger placement should be. I'm actually reading and playing along in time to what I see for the first time, and without having to look at what my hands are doing. It feels great.

    As a beginner, I wanted to know it all so I could start playing songs so I rushed everything. I sounded like crapola. Frustrated, I took your advice from an older video where you mentioned you wouldn't practice intonation until you have the bowing down on open strings first for at least a month or more. I sucked it up and just practiced getting the tone and technique down by only bowing on the open strings. By golly you were right! Screeching gone. Even the dogs and cats don't scatter when I practice now. Best few months I ever spent . Thanks for the great advice, Alison.

    Hi Alison, I usually never comment on YT but I just wanted to say a huge thank you for sharing your skills and making music education accessible and affordable to all. I went through your piano lessons a while back and am now trying the violin which has been a childhood dream. Your content is, as always, comprehensive but easy to follow. There are a lot of elements to the violin which make it a challenging instrument to learn but so far I have found it so much easier to connect the instrument to the sheet music which I have always struggled with on the piano. I am definitely subscribing to your Patreon. Thank you, you are an asset to the classical community!

    I'm excited to be ready to move into Lesson 6. I spent weeks working in the practice exercises in less 5 -- taking time to 'hit' only the proper open strings for each note, and running through each exercise at least three times perfectly before moving on. I broke both wrists last year (while dancing) and realize that poor steadiness bowing 'probably' is because I'm still building enough wrist strength and coordination so that I don't hit the neighbor-string. I developed a mental-picture to help me stay on each single string also... Maybe it's silly, but I think I need it -- So... 5:00 o'clock for the E-string, 4:00 o'clock for the A-string, 3:00 o'clock for the D-string, and 2:00 o'clock for the G-string. Not sure that's entirely kosher, but it seems to be helping me get on and stay on each string. Thanks for all your coaching -- and I like when you challenge us to practice and learn. I'm working up to 'rewarding' myself by purchasing your lesson books. Blessings!

      As someone with a visual impairment and recovering from a shoulder/neck injury I found your explanation of the bow positions really helpful!! That's the biggest hurdle for me is holding both arms up at the right angles to play for sustained time periods. I can't always see clearly what angles she's holding the bow at (because of my eyes, not poor video making) and this verbal explanation you've got on about the clock positions really helped. Thanks!

    One day I hope to tune by ear like you!!!

    I’m so happy to finally be able to move on to lesson 6, YAY!!! I already have a few questions though_ On exercise 2, what does the dot mean next to the open A? Also on exercise 5, what is the circle at the end?? Thanks to anyone for answering this☺️

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Its all explained in lessons 11-20, but the dot next to any note means to add on half of the note.
      For example, if you have a 2 beat note, then a dot behind it, the dot of worth half of said note (1) and so you add on what the dot is worth (1) to the main note (2) and the whole thing is worth 3 beats.
      The 'circle' is a note that is worth 4 beats.
      I would worry about this so much now, just get used to playing and concentrating on the violin and which notes and what and where on both the violin and sheet music, as what you ask (in my opinion) is not crucial to know right now. It will be explained soon, when you do need to know.

    Should I be focused on the left hand or my bow hand seeing as I cant really play without looking as of yet? Either I miss the finger note or a string depending on where I'm looking. What did you find easier to focus on when starting out? By the way my first finger note sounds like a recorder which is discouraging. Also should i press the string all the way to the fingerboard when playing the finger notes? Lastly does your $199 subscription cover more in detail not shown, videos, etc? Apologies for so many questions. Thank you in advance!

    I really love this series! I used to think music is nothing for me, because I'm "too stupid" to understand anything. Now I realize that's not the case, I just never had someone explain anything to me properly! Thank you so much for providing us with this course
    I have something I struggle with, anytime I play 1st Finger Notes on the G or D String (especially D String) the sound is kind of muted and not clear. Not sure how to explain it, but it sounds a bit messy.
    I've tried everything from pushing the string down with more pressure, less pressure. Even bowing with more or less pressure, more near to the fingerboard or more in the middle between fingerboard and the bridge. Nothing really makes a difference. Is this something that will get better with practise or is there anything else I am doing wrong? I don't have this problem with the A and E string.
    My Open Strings all sound beautiful.
    I have the Stentor II violin with GDE factory strings and my A string is Dominant

    • @arielthemermaid3576
      @arielthemermaid3576 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It’s technically going to be different for everyone based on the current tuning of their violin. The best way to figure out the exact position is by using a tuner. Slowly slide your finger up or down the neck while you play the string to get as close as possible to the correct note. Then, rather than memorize exactly where your finger is, listen to the pitch and try to remember that. This is the best way to learn because your tuning will never be exactly the same, so by recognizing the correct pitch, you can tell whether or not you’re making the correct sound, rather than trying to place your finger in any one spot.

    Hi Alison! Firstly a huge thank you for this amazing free content you provide. Your style of teaching and explaining really clicks for me. I decided to learn violin at the age of 43 (friends tell me i'm masochist lol) and have been following this. I'm definitely also hoping to subscribe to your patreon from next month and really want to support you. I have a question and i'm sorry if it's been answered elsewhere and I've missed it. How important is, at this stage, to not hit other strings, or not sound a bit scratchy, before moving on to next lesson and so on? I spent one week on open and now one week on 1st and know exactly where the notes are on the sheet and on the violin but i still sound scratchy at times (especially on the G string) and still hit other strings on occasion. Not always, mostly if i get a bit distracted or if my posture changes and the violin slips and changes position. Should i stick until it's perfect or should i move on? Thank you so much again :)

      It is important you learn to isolate strings, but you wont be able to do this is you are learning on a cheap student violin with a poor set up as its a false economy.
      You can carry on, but without upgrading to something better set up, you will always hit those other strings.

      The Online Piano & Violin Tutor thank you for your reply ☺️ It wasn’t super cheap (about £150) but of course I’m sure still not great quality. (It does go out of tune more often that I’d like). My husband says I can upgrade when I can play a full song so the plan is to do lessons 1-10 learn a song and then upgrade. I’m thinking fiddlerman as you recommend but slightly terrified of custom charges to UK

    The open strings took me 4 full days, well we are in quarantine, so time is all what I have.
    Second its my third day in the first finger, to be honest its hard but nothing is impossible, so I have a question!
    How to change the finger from one string to another, like in the last exercise in the pdf, when changing from E in the D string to B in A string?
    Awaiting for reply,
    And thanks Again.

      You will just need to stop the bow, reposition it, then carry on. To be honest, you wont be crossing more than 1 string in actual playing, but, I do like to make sure all my students are taught well and are always ahead of the game.

    Hi Alison, i have a question.
    I have a full size(4/4) violin, I put the dots at the distance you suggested, but when i play the finger notes, it sounds odd, so i tried doing it by ear & the finger notes sound similar to yours at around 3 cm for the first finger (instead of 3.6 cm), should i continue playing it at 3 cm then, or should i stick with the measurements you provided?

    Hi Alison, I'm currently stuck here trying to learn how to read music at the same time as learning to play with 50 year old eyes.
    Q: How concerned should I be with hitting the note perfectly at this point.
    My ear can't yet tell the difference but I have an app on my phone that will show me when a note is good or really flat or something like that. Should I stay here until it's always perfect? Or move on and just know that I'll get better?

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You need to train your ear to the correct note - otherwise if you worry about this later down the line, your ear will be used to hearing the wrong notes.

    Hello, Miss Alysson. First, I'd like to express my thanks to you, I'm an adult self learner and this has been great help. I have a few questions though.
    I use a tuner application to tune my violin, since my ears aren't accustomed to the notes just yet. My first question is regarding that, how much of a difference in frequency is acceptable? For example A is 440hz, is 441 acceptable? 439.7? Can mature musicians tell the tiniest difference in frequency or do they estimate within an acceptable range?
    Also for first finger notes, I've heard that a one millimetre displacement can cause a person to be out of tune, my ears can't tell the difference much now. So how do I know if I'm playing in tune while I'm practicing?
    Also, do you recommend that a person move on to the next lesson once they're able to play these exercises well, or once they're ready to remove the dot and recognise the notes by ear alone?

    Thank you so very much for these lessons.
    While practicing with a metronome, what would you suggest for a tempo to be able to play the lesson before moving on to the next?

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on the exercise - but the speed I played them at would be what you should aim for.
      Rather than getting a number you can just set on your metronome and struggle to get there, I would suggest you start the metronome at a silly slow speed and play them at that speed before you increase the number by say 10.
      I also think that it should be you who decides the speed during your practise - you will learn and understand better this way as you will start to know what you can and cant do and how to progress and how to practise.
      Start SLOW, then build up.

      Look at what you need too. it doesnt matter as long as your intonation is correct. If your intonation is poor or 'off' because you are looking at the sheet music, then you need to look at your fingers. There is no rule to say what you should or shouldnt be looking at.

    Hi there! Loving these videos and tutorials. Any help or tips for people with short fingers?

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Short fingers should not be an issue, but if you feel it is, then adjust your grip so your fingers are hooked more over the fingerboard.
      There is no right or wrong - as long as the palm of hand is NOT up and touching the underside of the neck.
      Move as necessary to reach the notes - even the 4th finger etc.
      Hope that helps 😊

    • @Hennertheshort

      @@TheOnlineViolinTutor thank you! And it is okay if I hit a strong with the side rather than the tips of the finger? For example, in my first position I can hit all the strings with the tip, but the G with the side due to my (really) short fingers.

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shouldn't be too much of an issue, but i would worry the palm will slip up towards hugging the neck and the fingers will become too close to the neck... you need some 'air' all around the hand where the fingers (tips) are only on the string and your hand hangs down as if you were hanging from a tree (you know what i mean lol).

      I originally put dots based on a tuner while waiting for chart. The finger sticker (so to speak) was off, so I double checked with my tuner and the chart was in fact a bit off (which is major for violin). Went to reviews and a lot of people were saying it was off. They are harder to see for playing position than dots too.

Generally, the stem is down but that is not very important. I do not know why the stems are written in different directions here, but they are the exact same b note

    Hello! I'm using your complete collection material and I'm on lesson 7. I noticed something and hoping you can clarify. I see one note on the music sheet can represent 2 different notes on the fingerboard.For example, F or F# on D string. Am I correct to say it is F# when there is a # symbol next to note and F when there isn't one? Which would change where exactly the finger will go. So on your 2nd finger exercise, on exercise 1, the second note is F. Correct? But then I'm wondering why on the 1st finger exercise, on exercise 2, we're play E first finger as F# instead of F? want to make sure I'm understanding correctly.

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So yes, you are correct when there is a # in front of an F (or any note) that it is to be playaed as a sharp note; F#.
      However, sometimes there are sharps (and flats) in the key signature ad this influences what notes to play also.
      If there is an F# in the key sig (there will be a # on tht top line) then ALL the Fs in that piece are to be played as F#... even though there will be no sharp directly in front of the individual notes.
      What the key signature (at the start of the piece) says, goes.
      This is explained in detail in lesson 12 in book 2, pages 13-17.
      I dont discuss this in the ifrst 10 lessons as its not necessary, over complicates things and I feel one just needs to get going and the rest will follow.
      Hope that helps...
