Hi Emma! I was the one who sent you The Summer Book and Moominland midwinter. Tove Jansson is my most beloved artist and writer and the way she captures life with all of its joys and sorrows is truly something special. I hope her words bring you comfort. Lots of love from snow-covered Finland
Also if you or someone else here are interested to learn more about Tove's life and work, I highly recommend visiting the recently launched Tove Jansson page :)
Hey Emma! I´m Finnish and so glad to see you receiving Tove´s books. Also the moomins aren´t hippos (they get very insulted if you call them hippos), they are just moomins. If you have any questions about the moomins ask away. :)

Tove Jansson is everything, her books (espacially the Moomin ones) capture a life philosophy, playfullness and wisdom that I haven't come across anywhere else! I think you're gonna love her work. She was also an amazing painter, something worth looking up. Sending love and peace from Finland! 💖❄
THE POPPY WAR!!!! literally my favourite series ever, it is SO GOOD i am literally so pumped that you're planning to read it!! rf kuang is actually releasing a dark academia book this summer that focuses heavily on colonialism in the british empire so if you end up enjoying the poppy war series, you might want to check that out too! just a note that there are a LOT of trigger warnings to beware of, so please go over those before you read! it's a book about war (hence the title) and kuang really doesn't shy away from the realities of it. even though the book is kind of advertised as a harry potter-esque "gifted main character goes to new school" underdog story, the majority of the book is set in war and it's absolutely brutal. edit: i also want to say that even though this is a historical fantasy, it's set in a fantasy world that's not actually china, just based off of it. rfk blends together a lot of different events from chinese history to build a more cohesive narrative so it may be a little confusing if you're not familiar with the subject. i would definitely encourage looking into stuff like the second sino-japanese war, the opium wars, and mao ze dong outside of reading! a lot of characters are also based on real life people but ofc bc it's fantasy rfk takes some creative liberties with both the events and the characters. it's still fairly accurate in terms of what happens and the impacts that the events had on china's people, it's just framed in a different way.
So glad you liked the Phantom of the Opera cards and poster! I got the poster from LitJoy. They have some cute bookish items in their online shop. Thank you for all your lovely videos! 💕
I also didn't enjoy any of the popular dark academia books, I especially disliked The Secret History but I just finished Piranesi by Susanna Clarke a couple of days ago and it absolutely blew my mind!! Although I have to say it isn't a typical dark academia book, it's quite unusual and experimental(it has some House of Leaves vibes to it) but it's the only book that I properly adored that can be classified as a dark academia book. I'd highly recommend Piranesi, it totally deserves all the hype.
Book hauls never fail to cheer me up, I can’t explain it but they partially feel like the utter excitement you have when you get new books. Oh also literature vid suggestion! I feel like you’d adore Persian literature, It’s pretty unknown outside of our community but it’s so brilliant

Oh, Emma!!! Thank you for you, first of all. I’m a huge fan. Secondly, thank you for introducing me to Tove Jansson and the Moomins. Even though I’m ancient (49), Moomintroll has brought me such joy. My world has felt like The Great Flood lately, and that title especially helped me see that even if everything shifts (like Moominpapa’s house), it can still be shiny and blue and have the family together. Okay, now I’m sobbing. But, seriously, I don’t know what I’d do without your channel.
So excited that you're exploring more books from Machado de Assis! I'm from Brazil and I think you'd also love the works from Moacyr Scliar. As he wasn't as famous as Machado, there are fewer translated brooks from him but one of his most famous works, "Centaur in Garden", can be found in English for sure. Thanks for your lovely content!
This photo of Machado on the back is my favourite of him. I think it's from 1904, four years before he dies. In that same year he lost his wife Carolina, after a long life together. I'm dying to know what you'll think of Dom Casmurro and The Posthumous Memoirs.😱😱🤯 My personal favourite between the two is Casmurro, but i admit that Brás Cubas is his best novel. ✌🏾🤜🏾🤛🏾
Hey Emma, about Zola, The Ladies' Paradise is definitely the best place to start for me! I feel like it is one of his easiest reads, and the story is beautiful. My favorite Zola's book is "The Kill" or "La Curée" in French. I hope you will like it!
I love queen Tove Jansson and "Moominpappa at sea" is incredible. BUT I would recommend for you to actually try and read all the other Moomin books that go before that one (because they kinda have an order), as "Moominpappa at sea" is much about the characters growth across the series, their development and almost the wrap up of their story. It actually is the last book the Moomin family was featured in, so... read them all, you won't regret it, it's a super fun ride
Hey Emma, I have been a follower for a while now. I am a first-year special education teacher and am often very tired when I come home from work, so it is so nice to turn on your videos and have a friend to come home to and discuss books with. Much love to you as well.

Fun Machado story! In my 19th century Brazilian lit class, we read Quincas Borba, the least popular of Machado's novels, and I decided to write my term paper on why everyone was reading it wrong because it's clearly meant to be a philosophical farce along the same lines as Candide. I got an A in the class. 😉
Emma!! Excited for you to explore Machado’s literature. Though his novels can be read individually, the best order to read them is Posthumous Memoir, Quincas Borba, and then Dom Casmurro. That’s the chronological order in which the stories happen, and it’s wonderful to see the little references to characters and episodes across the books. Good reading to you!
I’ve been wanting to get my hands on Hiddensee ever since I read Wild Winter Swan!! Gregory Maguire totally rocked my socks off, I have a feeling you’ll really like it too!

What's super interesting about Zola is that his main work was actually a 20 book series called the "Rougon-Macquart". Loved the Aggie Morton books!
The lady's paradise is such a wonderful novel ! I had to read it for class in high school and completely fell in love. I would advise starting Zola's work with this one also because it's set earlier in the Rougon-Macquart cycle !
