There's a sequel too called Maximo vs Army of Zin. Now you can buy different boxershorts that give different abilities. THere's a number of other changes too.
I love finding little hidden gems like this (both the video and the game). There is something truly special about lesser known games from the Golden Age of Gaming like this. Even more modern indies can't quite capture the vibe, it's not nostalgia as it applies to a lot of games even when played for the first time with no prior knowledge but it's difficult to truly describe, I think it has to do with how uniform game development tools have become in recent years so that even well made retro style games just have a certain cleanness or uniformity to them that just didn't exist prior because game engines and other ready made toolkits weren't as widespread, and perhaps the fact that design philosphies were similarly less crystalized and unifrom so you'd see more experimentation instead of most everything fitting neatly into well defined genre tropes.
I wholeheartedly agree. While those tools helped companies stop re-inventing the wheel, it also stopped them from making any other interesting shapes. Another factor that I think impacts that flavor is that without such strict hardware limitations, we don't see the creative solutions devs made to work around them. A lot of those things became the cool glitches or speedrunning strategies that keep a game alive in a community for decades. Instead, you get battle-passes.
I played this game for one day 20 years ago by complete chance. My dad’s friend from Oregon visited with his sons, they brought the game and we played it all day and night. My most visceral memory was of the different colored swords and everything feeling really novel. I never played the game again but the memory of playing it stuck with me, and it occasionally pops in my head randomly.
Man I love a core memory like that. I can see how it would stand out, the music and art style are pretty unique, and it would be a fantastic "pass the controller" type game to play with friends. Anyway, thanks for sharing, and watching.
Maximo, along with Jak & Daxter, was one of the first games i owned when i got a PS2. I loved it even though I couldn't beat it til years later. Then i played the sequel (Maximo vs. Army of Zin), and I still love playing that game to this day.
Gotta love Jak. It's surprising how much those two have in common now that you mention it. I've got a lot of recommendations for the sequel, I'll have to give it a shot sometime. Thanks for watching.
@@jurtheorc8117 Of course it's alright to ask, I love talking about games, though it has been a long time since I played the Jak series so apologies if I mix things up. I'm just going off the top of the head anyway. The biggest similarities would be in their art direction, they're both brightly colored and cartoony, but I think they both also use vertex animation which gives it a nice squash and stretch. I remember jak also being level based and but I'm not sure if it had the central hubs like spyro. Combat systems are mostly melee and lean heavily on the double jump for evasion but have limited magical powerups. The collections and powerup systems are similar, though Jak leans a lot more on collection mechanics, both stories involve a hero trying to save someone they care about who was corrupted by a dark force and that person being transformed Daxter by eco and Sophia being a demon. Idk, I'm just rambling now, but the main thing was in their aesthetics.
The algorithm seems to have blessed you, lad. You have a nice chilled-out tone of voice to deliver these with, also good choice of complimentary music. This game is like a missing evolutionary link between Ghosts'n'Goblins and Dark Souls. You can almost see the continuity of ideas iterating but the core idea remaining similar. Almost ironic that it went with this almost kiddy-looking style, similar to how Overlord (the game) feels but even less grungy, yet it still feels kinda cool for it - sort of kid-edgy without being cringe, I have to say I kinda like how it shakes out.
The algorithm has been very kind to this one, but life has taught me that can only mean bad things are coming, and thank you. I think they were on to something with the series, it's just a shame that they didn't stick with it longer and refine the formula. Fromsoft was doing Kings Field to a small audience for years, and Demons Souls was a commercial flop in Japan, but they stuck with it and polished the systems until we got something people still can't stop talking about. Maybe one day Capcom will bring their development talents back to this series. Anyway, thanks for watching.

I was definitely struck by how polished the game was. If Capcom ever went back to Maximo, I bet they would find a huge audience now that difficult games have come back into mainstream popularity.

I really wish this would get released on ps5 even as a direct port. I loved this game and used to play all the time as a kid but I wish I could play it again
I feel like Army of Zin improved on it a lot, but that last boss man, the presentation, the crooked view you have, it's masterful, usually games gets a bit worse as they go due to development time, they typically run out of time and money by the end part, but this one ended on such a bang, and cause the game's a bit brutal not everyone saw it sadly. Too bad the third game got canned, it and Legends 3 still pains me.
Absolutely agree with everything you said. As I've dug through more of these old games the intro is always awesome and the end usually feels like someone was working on it as the teacher came around to collect homework. I think I mentioned it in another comment but Maximo in actually really polished for a ps2 game, it runs great and I didn't run in to any weird bugs. It's just meant to be hard, and it is. I read about that and Legends 3. I recently did a Legends video, so at least I'm emotionally ready for the hit when I get to Legends 2.
Had this game as a kid, sure as hell never bear it. I definitely remember getting stuck at some ice boat level. But I also have vague memories of Hell so guess I got to that point too, but definitely never passed it. But the thing that really keeps this game in my memory, is the fact that my mom actually played it with me. And she is not a gamer WHATSOEVER. Like I can't think of a single other video game she's touched that isn't some mobile game. And yet she suffered through this game with me.
Damn, that's pretty impressive. I would not have made it past the first boss. When I did get to the ice level, I had to go look up what to do about the bomb guys online, it was brutal out there. And that's awesome, she must have really wanted to spend some time with you, because it would be brutal to watch my kids suffer through Maximo lol.
I think the funniest part, was Maximo's response to the pimp slap. "That's enough!" I was expecting him to start giving tips, on how to properly control your lady. Pro tip: Use baby powder.
I couldn't work it in to the script but I absolutely thought the same. "Everybody gets one Achille, she's kind of annoying, but if you hit the woman I love in the face a few more times, we're going to have words!"
I don't know why, but despite starting Medievil at least six times, I've never made it past the fifth level. I'll have to buckle down on it one of these days, it seems like a fun game. I just struggle with the attention span.
i was that unlucky kid who got it when i was young and ofc, did not like it because it was so hard, never managed to beat it but managed to get to the first boss but not mutch futher then that, all this without saveing too
You still got a lot farther than I would have. I was around the second level when I decided to look into the cheat codes. Otherwise I would have just moved on.
@@KalTheSkeleton i do remember i tried to find them but found nothing but keept repeating those same levels and dying over and over again and restarting, in the end i sold the game along with a bunch of other ps2 games i had that i dident like
I rememebr seeing this game get advertised back in the day, but never got around to trying it. I always liked the Ghosts & Gouls series and was curious about a sequel/continuation but I think it came out at a time when I didn't really want to engage with "difficult games". I think it and it's sequel would be great for remasters. Maybe revamp the save system so it has more flexibility (but keep the old one for people who want it) and I'd probably grab them, though I doubt Capcom could considering how they seem to treat IPs like this and Onimusha. That said, I do like an idea the fighting game TH-camr Thorgi suggested in his "build a roster" entry for Darkstalkers. I won't say any more but it's a great idea.
Capcom did apparently mention that they are working on several projects with older IP's, but I still agree with everything you said. I actually forgot Onimusha was Capcom too, those were great. I didn't think about that, but Maximo would have fit right in something like Smash Bros. They're just leaving money on the table all over the place.
If you didn't know, there's a sequel to Maximo called Maximo vs Army of Zin. It's not as hard, does away with the "pay to save" thing as well as the Ability Slots, but still gets tough. You can buy different boxershorts for different abilities/bonuses, as well as some different enchantments for the Shield. This time the Shield doesn't disappear if its Super Meter is empty. You just can't throw it anymore. Bosses are less puzzles and more... well, bosses. Especially the Baron. I played it and enjoyed it. Can recommend looking more into that game!
I definitely can't take credit for that one, but Gamechops is kind enough to allow anyone to use their music. The link to the album is in the description if you're into it.
You know, I hadn't considered that angle. I'm assuming we're talking about Inn's and Tents like the NES final fantasies? I think you've got me on that one.
@@KalTheSkeleton Now that you mention it, Dragon's Dogma 2 also does it somewhat, you gotta rest at an Inn to get a "hard save" that makes your pawn comeback from the Rift. You can get around it by sleeping in your house, but that costs money as well.
Definitely a valid point, I think the idea I was totally failing to communicate was that money in Maximo only has a few uses. It's basically just there to save and buy healing items, and the game ties the safety of saving, armor and health together to balance the difficulty where almost every game I've ever played keeps saving and survival as separate functions. When you save in Maximo, you are actually choosing to give up some of your safety net to buy armor and potions. But again, not a bit of that came out of my mouth, so here we are. Anyway, thanks for watching.
Mmmmm. It’s interesting. I’ve been playing Maximo since I was a kid. So, when people compare it to Dark Souls, it feels strange. Because this game is so easy to me now, I can mostly breeze through it. However, I’ve been playing since I was like…6. So. I have a lot of skin in the game. And it’s so much fun, I’ve been doing playthroughs where I eat it in one sitting. No saves. No death coins needed. Dark Souls is so damn challenging and…frankly boring (to me) it’s hard for me to compare it to this. I will say, it wasn’t always an easy game but I had the benefit of playing it for as long as I have. Had I grown up with Dark Souls, maybe I would enjoy them more. But I just don’t. This feels closer to like…Bloodborne, honestly. It’s a lot looser and a bit faster. But again, I’m biased. I prefer Bloodborne to Dark Souls. Much like, I prefer Maximo to both DS and BB. Due to the speed and overall pacing of the game. Loved the review. Love seeing this game get recognition. You should play the second one. It’s a bit more complex than this one is.
After getting through it the first time with the lives cheats, I did a partial second playthrough for extra footage without them and you're absolutely right, it does feel easier. It's a game that rewards you for mastering it's systems, and I love finding games that do that. I had a similar setup with Dark Souls because I grew up in the sticks with no internet, and didn't get a lot of new games even though I had a job back then. So I just kept slamming my head into that brick wall until it broke. Now it's a game I can blow through in a day because once you know it's systems, they are easy to exploit. Obviously Bloodborne had the benefit of learning from Dark Souls, but you're right, the flow of it's combat and the cohesiveness of it's design absolutely is better, it's probably better than all of the souls games because it's tight while they get a lot more bloated, but I've still only played it once compared to at least a dozen times for ds1 because it's the comfort game. I got off topic, but anyway. Definitely looking forward to the second one, though it will probably be awhile. I have a tendency to wander between genres. Thanks for checking the video out.
I did see it online for like twenty bucks, but that seems like scalper prices to me. It can surely be found cheaper, or on the high seas, which I would never encourage.
I don't think my opinion is valid, but this game is very easy ones you know the game mechanics. Oh and if you know where it is every treasure is a lot more easy too
I think that's a very valid opinion, and I agree with it. I didn't want to run it in to the ground in the video, but that's what I meant when I said the difficulty came in large part from learning what the game wanted you to do. The learning curve was steep, and it doesn't hold your hand, but that can be fun too.
TH-cam highlights types of videos that the person who watches TH-cam on that account typically deviate towards. So if you watch gaming videos a lot it will prioritize gaming videos over everything else and if you watch a lot of a certain type of genre it would just send you any type of video correlating to that type of genre you're into. It also helps if you understand the algorithm and kind of trick it into sending your videos to other people. I've seen your videos quite often pop up in my feed because I watch gaming-related content unfortunately I am not your nationality so that also plays in effect. You're more likely to find people in your own region unless you make content that appeases to everyone.
Oi! Now you tell me. I never even thought of that. I somehow didn't even realize the game had a crouch attack until the bomb skeletons in the ice areas. Then of course I saw it in the manual to hit them in the legs.
Oh definitely. Now that I've gotten through it with the cheats I feel like I could beat it without them but on my first attempt it was pretty rough going. My aged gamer thumbs can't keep up anymore lol
I don't know why but TH-cam has given me quite a few game reviews from smaller channels and I am loving it so far.
The algorithm moves in mysterious ways. I'm always happy to find new creators too.
I knew this game had something to do with Ghosts'n'Goblins when I saw that, just like that game, you're down to your undies when your health is low.

"Everybody gets one Achille, she's kind of annoying, but if you hit the woman I love in the face a few more times, we're going to have words!"
try the sequeal. I really enjoyed it and I feel they improved the formula
You should review Medievil. You unlock memories when you played this game lol. I had the ratatouille moment 😂
With the rise of Dark Souls and the like, this would be the perfect time to bring Maximo back, too.
Nice majual theme
I definitely can't take credit for that one, but Gamechops is kind enough to allow anyone to use their music. The link to the album is in the description if you're into it.
Noice
"I've never played anything that forced me to pay to save my game" Believe it or not, that was somewhat common in old JRPGs.
You know, I hadn't considered that angle. I'm assuming we're talking about Inn's and Tents like the NES final fantasies? I think you've got me on that one.
Donkey Kong country does this as well! At least DKC2 does
@@KalTheSkeleton Now that you mention it, Dragon's Dogma 2 also does it somewhat, you gotta rest at an Inn to get a "hard save" that makes your pawn comeback from the Rift. You can get around it by sleeping in your house, but that costs money as well.
i replayed the demo on ps2 so many times....
This is a great. The sequel Maximo vs Army of Zin [2003/4] is all round better!
I've heard good things, and I'm looking forward to it. Though I do struggling with focusing on any one series. It's on the list!
fun video,
"i never playerd something that makes me pay to save"
RE typewriter wants to have a word with you
Definitely a valid point, I think the idea I was totally failing to communicate was that money in Maximo only has a few uses.
Hoping both Maximo games get rereleased for PS4/PS5 with save states, rewind, and trophy support like a few PS1/PS2 games recently got.
A sub 1k account talking about interesting games? count me in!
I do what I can, welcome aboard.
Nice ending 😂
I've always believed it's important for everyone to get a happy ending. Thanks for watching.
How much can you pay for this game???
I did see it online for like twenty bucks, but that seems like scalper prices to me. It can surely be found cheaper, or on the high seas, which I would never encourage.
@@KalTheSkeleton why not play Dragon's Lair 2 time warp?
You just got a female subscriber lol 😂 keep up the awesome work!
Shhhh! Keep it secret, keep it safe. I will try, thanks for watching.
Wonder why a Video like this gets highlighted, if i made a full Let's Play years ago. YT sucks sometimes
Why doing anybody talk bout this game
12:22 To avoid that you have to bend down.
Oi! Now you tell me. I never even thought of that. I somehow didn't even realize the game had a crouch attack until the bomb skeletons in the ice areas. Then of course I saw it in the manual to hit them in the legs.
4:14 99 Death Koins?😂 Someone used cheats
Oh definitely. Now that I've gotten through it with the cheats I feel like I could beat it without them but on my first attempt it was pretty rough going. My aged gamer thumbs can't keep up anymore lol
1:34 SILENCE!
