A baby elephant named Naledi has lost her mother to illness. She is able to get a little bit of milk from Cathy, another female in the herd, but without enough to eat she is becoming skinny and weak.

These situations require immense amounts of love and she needs to be shown she is loved and valued. I know exactly how this little one feels and I wish I could be there to be her friend and help her see there is good in the world.

I agree, I've watched many videos and hate it when they say what happened next.
Utterly heartbreaking but the guys do manage to get her to suckle on formula and she pulls thru; her cousin got her to re- join the herd.
Is anyone tracking how many baby elephants are abandoned or separated from their herd each year?

Naledi has grown into a healthy calf with the help of formula milk. Unfortunately, this isn't always the case. Many orphans just can't survive teething if they don't receive enough real elephant milk.
Where's the rest of the story then. How do you know this? Can please direct us to a link of your claim?

Yes, this 'don't interfere with the natural order of things' is bullshit. Humans are over hunting, and while that is not ok, so is not showing compassion for a fellow living thing. Sometimes we have seen one species showing compassion for another. Then why the hell shouldn't we. I thought we were supposed to be the superior species.
Not to mention elephants are endangered.
But we also don't know what happened after they ended the video. Did they help the calf or not?

I hope they eventually stepped in to save the baby elephant. Human interference is fine when you're on a reserve. Maybe they're waiting on the old elephant to turn it around and quasi-adopt the orphan?
The tears were really heartbreaking. To be at such young age and weep because you're sad, alone, hungry. It's truly truly sad.

Happy that Naledi made it. However, I was horrified to see the "rescuers" with bullhooks and RIDING ELEPHANTS! If the message of the documentary is that every elephant counts, then how can they condone elephant riding? or Use of bullhooks? Elephant riding just encourages more elephants to be removed from the wild for that purpose.

I know I'm several years late but doesn't a mother elephant always have a nanny to help raise a baby? I learned it on another channel that's very knowledgeable and rescues elephants and let's them live their life free in the park. It broke my heart when Cathy kicked the baby away. Why didn't you help feed the baby before 3 days before it would've possibly died? Sitting and watching them go down hill was wrong and you should've started helping her a lot sooner. I'm glad someone (not sure who) stepped in and took care of her.

These caretakers are just looking at the cub suffering for the sake of dramatic filming
Well first of all it’s a calf, not a cub. Second, it’s a “controlled” environment which means they will more than likely bottle feed the calf but that’s a last resort. They’re hoping the mother will take care of the calf because that’s the way it’s supposed to be and because the moms milk has nutrients that can’t be duplicated artificially, nutrients the calf desperately needs for a variety of reasons.

I hope so, and she will get by, even with a replacement mother who unfortunately does not seem to be her adoptive mother.

The David sheldrick wildlife trust was founded in Kenya by the late dame daphne sheldrick and is based there.this clip is from Zimbabwe coz I can tell from the accents of the speakers.zimbabwe is located in Southern Africa and Kenya in Eastern Africa.the distance is thousands of miles.how on earth can they help this poor little baby elephant?i blame these uncaring gentlemen for just blabbing and talking too much instead of comforting that baby and helping it to survive.they even had the nerve to record such a distressing video for social media,shame on them foolish people.

And you still look on, get some good milk and feed that calf
Give her some formula or other form of milk (I've seen them get cow's or goat's milk) or even an IV full of vitamims and minerals and electrolytes. This is what they do at other rescue centers. She should live recieving these types of treatments. :(
DSWT found out they still died on cow and goat milk. They found out that a mix formula they concocted with coconut milk was closer to elephants milk.
Did the people not help 5he baby and give it food
Why don’t they send her to Dave Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. They have a formula for babies that work. And integrate back into wild.
What happened to the bears and wolves in Europe?
People should never intervene and play God when it comes to nature. If that elephant calf's situation was caused by human behavior, that's one thing. However, if people come across a naturally sick or dying elephant in nature, as sad as it may be, they should allow nature to take it course. Because once that elephant dies, it would go on to feed COUNTLESS other healthy living beings. Instead, it's probably going to die in vain in some sanctuary where its carcass isn't going to benefit anyone.

The best formula for that calf is coconut milk. Instead of feeding it with formula mixed with antibiotics.
@CANALI Rodriguez coconut milk is closer to elephant milk. I seen it on DSWT that they lost a lot of baby elephants on cow and goat's milk, so they had to find a formula quickly which they found out coconut milk worked with whatever they mix in it.
CANALI Rodriguez yes Maria Stella riots is 100% percent correct.this formula was actually discovered and perfected by the late daphne sheldrick who had a little elephant named Aisha in Kenya where she was born and lived.at first she gave Aisha vow milk but it gave her terrible diarrhoea that almost killed her and so she tried mixing different formulas and discovered that when she mixed coconut milk either baby formula milk it worked and was closest to elephant milk.please read about Daphne sheldrick,watch a documentary called the elephant that loved too much,it will make you cry honestly.it is about Aisha the elephant who died literally of a broken heart because Daphne left the conservancy in the Kenyan bush where she lived to travel to the capital Nairobi to organise her daughter's wedding and while she was away the baby elephant pined for Daphne and stopped eating her food and milk.when Daphne was told of this she rushed back to the conservancy and found poor Aisha had lost do much weight,she missed Daphne.shortly after that she passed away.it is do touching u must watch it or read about it.so this coconut based milk formula had been perfected for Aisha.
