    What are you favorite Alexander Pfister Games?

    • @fmargueirat
      @fmargueirat 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      So far I played, in order of more liked to less liked, Great Western Trail, Mombasa/Maracaibo (tied), Port Royal, Oh My Goods and Isle of Skye.

      Port Royale is probably my favorite small game of his. Great Western Trail is the cleanest of his big games.

    I felt very, very honored to be the start of your designer series. Thank you very much for covering so many of my games. As you said, there will be the expansion „The Uprising“ for Maracaibo soon. And hopefully I will be able to get rid of the theme of Mombasa in the near future, as I don’t like it either. Looking forward to your next designer series.

      Please, Mr. Pfister, I'm sad with this new tendency of designers to choose children's themes or mild themes. I don't fell like playing Feld's Bonfire because the theme is equal to the themes of cartoons that my 8 years old daughter watchs. I love the theme of Maracaibo and I love everything in Mombasa, including the theme. The reflections on the theme of Mombasa are positive as we are enjoying to play the game: "are the companies paying the workers in the game?" I say this as a colonized south american citizen.

    Great Series! Ive recently started to realize that Pfister is one of my fave designers, with Feld being his main opponent for my shelf space, lol. Im currently playing Maracaibo, with the expansion and in campaign mode with friends, and we LOVE it! So good! (the dual layer boards made it and insta-buy) From what I can tell, you two are going to really like Skymines. Its very much like Mombasa, but with more appeal, and a few rules changes that lend to better strategizing. Best of luck, thanks for a great video and keep up the awesome work!

    Loved catching up on this series. The three that stood out most to me were Maracaibo, GWT, and Mombasa (in that order), since I tend to like heavier games and don’t like a lot of luck. But I really enjoyed watching all of the games showcased!
    Also very excited that those three have all had the issues with their themes addressed in meaningful ways.

    Awesome series you guys. I really appreciate the work and time you put into this. Alexander Pfister has very quickly become an almost instant buy for me...(except for Monster Expedition that's just not my cup of tea) I think my favorite is also GWT though. Something about that mix of mechanisms and the smoothness just tickles my bone entirely. But I too thought that Blackout is quite underrated. Although number 2 definetly has to go to Maracaibo. And while I wasn’t drawn to CloudAge, as it looked too light for my taste, I can see why it falls the way it does on each of your lists. It’s nice to have a refreshing take on these games and see how they stack for each of you against a new release such as that. Does a great job of removing the “cult of the new” aspect from CloudAge and gives it a fresh perspective. Also doubles down on why your channel is doing great work for the hobby at large. I’ve liked all Pfister’s games I’ve played so far (not played Mombasa, Broom service and Cloud age yet). Recently started the Maracaibo campaign and eagerly looking forward to getting together with my friends and continuing our adventures.
    I do think it’s slightly unfair to call Port Royal a pure push your luck game. True, it plays a big role, but through your choices you can mitigate and build a little engine. It’s my favorite filler! I like to add the contracts and play it cooperatively now and then. I have bought but still have to try The Adventure begins, the campaign for Port Royal.

    Hellooooo 🤩

Congratulations on finishing another series!

Love this video so much! So interesting to hear you dissect his designs a bit, and talk about the different mechanisms he is using!
    I agree with Naveen! I’d also love a heavier game with loads of cool mechanisms!
    Loved Naveens comment «We talk about these games together» I just started imagining how it would be at your house if you never talked about the games you played 😂
    The rules for CloudAge was not very good at letting you know how the cloud cards worked. We also played that wrong the first time!

 Didn’t know about the new rules for Oh My Goods! Will check those out, as we are not super fans of the game!

Blackout is one I really need to play again! Only played it once when it was released, but never got back around to play it again. Did you only play with 2 players? I think we did back when we played, and would love to play it with more!
    Loved Monique’s reaction at a specific time at the top of the list! I always love shocked reactions for picks, haha!

We just got the Journeyman expansion to Isle of SKye, so we’ll try to play that sometime during 2021!
    Would love to play a 4 player games of both your #1s when we can meet up in person :D

Thanks again for this great top list and discussion! I really enjoyed it!

    I have to try out Blackout: Hong Kong. I've seen it at a couple local game stores on the clearance shelf so I thought the game might not be that good. I'll definitely try it out. Hopefully it's still on the shelf! BTW, I am a huge Great Western Trail fan. My best friend and I play it about once every month, maybe more. I have fun playing it even if I get stomped. Great series, you two! I'm jealous! I wish I had some friend(s) that would do a whole series with me.

    With Euro's It's all about gameplay theme and artwork might attract/detract people from a game but after you are playing you just see the gameplay. A comparison I can make is I used to play a lot of fighting games and graphics are good but after a little bit you don't even see the sprites any more. Don't know if it makes sense.

    I love Broom Service! It is one of the games where I have to pay attention to where everyone is. My recommendation to all players is to always have your witches next to a cloud at the end of the round if you plan to use a fairy card next time. That way you can use your fairy no matter the order the fairy is called. This one tip has changed the fun of the experience for new players.

    • @BeforeYouPlay
      @BeforeYouPlay  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Amy, that's a great tip! We are excited to play it again. What is your favorite player count?

    • @ArtisticWanderings
      @ArtisticWanderings 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@BeforeYouPlay I am a sucker for the game at 2 because I get to do more brave actions. Getting away with 3 or 4 brave cards in a round is a thrill. I do enjoy it all counts, but only if I explain the previous tip about leaving witches near a cloud or two. I also encourage players to play cards that they can at least get the cowardly action on despite the order of how they are played. The game becomes more strategic than random.
      I guess it is why I love the game. The depth of the game reveals itself a little more with each play. The tension of calling brave or cowardly can be intense.

    • @ginsbu
      @ginsbu 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great tips! Similarly for sequencing Witches and Druids: try to position both pawns in the previous round so that, if you are forced to play your Witch before delivering, you will still be able to use the Druid with the other pawn. Also, don’t count on gathering potions on the same round you want to deliver them-gather a round ahead! Broom Service a game about planning for contingencies, not optimizing an ideal plan.
      FWIW, I like it best with 3 or 4.

    • @ArtisticWanderings
      @ArtisticWanderings 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ginsbu yes! It is all about contingency plans! It is rare to pull off a combo with the four cards in one round. I don’t have any other games that play like this which makes it a keeper in my collection.

    I will tell you that I had a play at 2 players, where my opponent had multiple master builders and he still got spanked. Focusing on one thing often leads to issues on the other side. In this case he was building while I was placing cubes and exploring. I think that there is likely a major move to be made there, but then money is not easy to come by, so he can only build so many cards.

    Double layer ship-boards.

    I first watched this video sometime in 2021. I think that at the time I had only played Port Royal and maybe Great Western Trail. However, I've since played Isle of Skye and bought and played Mombasa (I think that I found the last retailer in Australia with 1 copy left), Black Out Hong Kong and Oh, my goods!
    I think that my rankings are:
    - Great Western Trail
    - Mombasa (based on 1 play, I reckon this will end up as my favourite Alexander Pfister game)
    - Black Out Hong Kong
    - Port Royal
    - Oh my goods
    - Isle of Skye
    For me the big box game are far superior to the other 3. I'd like to thank Naveen in particular, as I've ended up buying 2 games that he's particularly highlighted in the past (Mombasa, in this series) and also Schotten Totten.
    Your game tastes very much align with mine, where mechanics are more important than themes.

    Did you try Great Western Trail with Rails to the North expansion? I wouldn't recommend anyone to start the experience with it as it increases the complexity significantly, but it's great in a sense that it opens up new strategies if you're fairly experienced with the base game already. Downside: it makes the selling phase a bit longer. I consider this a great expansions because it does exactly that, expands one aspect of the game and because I feel like it gives us an option: unlike many expansions where you either always play with that or never, here I sometimes like to include it and sometimes like to play without it.
