OMG, I LOVE the stone walls. There are hikes in the woods here in CT that have stone walls in them, showing that some of our woods were once pasture lands.
I've always liked living in Connecticut not for what's in the state, but for its proximity to other things. We're 90ish minutes from Boston, 2 hours from New York, 5 hours from DC, between 1-3 hours for great skiing, and no more than 30 minutes to beaches. We also have great hiking, especially in autumn with the foliage.
Yes, I used to live in Southeastern Connecticut for 8 years form 1994 to 2002, really like that area, 10 min to beach, 2 hours to Boston or NY city. But I heard now its tax is as high as NJ.
Native nutmegger here. Massachusetts has better beaches (i.e. "the real ocean" vs LI Sound). Both have aggressive drivers; Massachusetts drivers are known as Massholes. :D
Wrap this around your brain. I was born in CT but never lived there. Lol. It was the closest hospital by NY state where my parents lived. Makes it confusing when people ask me what state I’m from. I commonly just say NY state because I never lived in CT.
As a Connecticut resident, I really felt the “Massachusetts without Boston”. It’s pretty accurate, but pretty quiet. Great video, oh yeah also the WWE is down here in Stamford.
I wouldn't say CT is just MA without Boston. You cut Boston out and MA urban areas still outpace most cities in CT by a good bit. "Boston" as it's traditionally thought of is really greater Boston which at its widest definition includes Worcester, Cambridge, Lowell, Providence and parts of southern NH. If you took that out MA would be left with Greater Springfield and the Berkshires, that really wouldn't compare to CT either.
@Harry Engel Yep, Brookline boarders Boston so it definitely falls in the broad definition of Boston or Greater Boston. In Massachusetts you have the towns and cities that directly revolve around Boston (like Brookline) and then you have Worcester County. In between you have the metro west which isn't sure if it relates more to Worcester County or Boston. Worcester County and Boston do differ a good bit in culture even though the population density is pretty consistent from Worcester all the way east to Boston. The greater Springfield area is also densely populated but is more similar to cities in CT. Like I said even that isn't a perfect comparison because Springfield is bigger than every CT city.
@Harry Engel Interesting about Granville, it is a super small town but I was never aware of it's voting history. Yes Brookline is very affluent and a lot of wealthy people live there who have business or play sports in Boston but don't want to be in the city. I have a fun fact for you. Massachusetts is one of the most densely populated states (3rd in the US) but at the same time over 60% of it's land is forest (8th most forested). Pretty crazy for one of the most urbanized states and smallest in terms of land area to be mostly made up of forest if you think about it. Shows how much open land the United States has.
Alot of CT especially the ghetto hood urbanish parts such as BRIDGEPORT where I live for 30+ years do have basically the same slang as NYC & plus alot of CT cities & towns also have their own words & slang even though its still very much similar as NYC!!....
Yay my home state of Massachusetts is in a video!!! I love my state as it is is absolutely historically rich and it's education is so great, which is something I am so happy about due to me wanting to become a history educator. Thanks for the amazing video as always Mr. Beat!!
Oh yeah, I have! I remember you mentioning you made that video because of the super bowl at the time if I remember correctly, and that the Chiefs hadn't been to one in a while lol. Well, I guess them winning in 2020 was a highlight in an otherwise bad year.
Born, raised, and currently living in Connecticut. This was extremely accurate! The biggest complaints people have about CT are taxes/cost of living, and our cities have high crime. But Connecticut is a beautiful state and I love living here. For sports, from what I’ve seen, we’re split down the middle. I see support from both Boston and New York teams. New Haven also has the best pizza ever, that’s just fact 😂
Frank Pepe's really delivers! I'm a Connecticut native but am living in Ohio for some time - one of my previous landladies mentioned that she still craves Frank Pepe's every now and then! Her husband lived in CT many years ago, and Frank Pepe's was one taste they could never forget.
@alejandrojefferson6993 I'm in central CT and I'm a Boston sports fan. Here in Connecticut it is a pretty even split between New York sports fans and Boston sports fans
The way I see it Connecticut has nothing going for it it's a total shit hole compared to other states ridiculously high taxes they take virtually all your money and you get nothing in return the roads are without a doubt the worst I've ever seen the weather sucks it's a very congested state everything I just mentioned is 100% fact why you would like to stay is beyond me you cannot dispute the facts I just mentioned and last but not least most of the people are far left liberal nuts with suits the name perfect the Nutmeg State and this is from someone that's born in this shit hole.
@@iammrbeat That's right plus, if I'm correct my state of Connecticut was the place where the Federalists Party had a convention during the war of 1812 that ultimately led to their demise "The Hartford Convention"
And what is it like to live on the Providence Plantations, the bit everybody always forgets about? (Wasn't it also recently removed from the 300 year old official name of the State it had from before there even was an USA?) must be like an invisible sandwich filling then? ;)
I got drunk in Mt. Vernon & somehow ended up in the Warren Alpert Hospital the next morning. Apparently security found me passed out in a park near Brown & I was unresponsive.
My wife and I grew up in CT. I LOVE this state, education, salaries, democracy, closeness to NY and MA is great. We can do a day trip in CT through the state and MA and find something wonderful and new every single time we venture out. We have vacationed in RI and love it. Most of our family stems from NY and I was born in NYC, my wife's family NYC. A high majority of CT residents stem from NY families and lived there as well at some point in their lives. CT is a bit calmer then MA, and MA has very nice vacation areas like Marthas Vineyard but don't plan on living there if you can't spend more then 2 million on a house. Healthcare is great in CT. The town we now live in is great, as was the previous town. West Hartford and Farmington. People here overall are smart, polished, and the seasons here are great. Taxes are high but salaries are also among the highest in the country. A School counselor in Florida makes less then half of the their salary in CT. The offset of cost of living although lower in Florida is not nearly low enough to justify living there. Education there sucks, heat sucks, I mention FL. because a lot of CT people have second homes in Florida. LOVE Connecticut.
Tufts university grad here- thanks for the shout out as evidently the 4th most important Massachusetts college haha. Both are great states with a lot of history, but I think once CT legalizes marijuana it will definitively be better. I’ve only driven through but the interstate is immaculate, and I loved not paying tolls!
But the taxes are noticeably worse. The income tax (CT graduated 5-7% above $10000/yr. (3% under $10000/yr.) vs. MA flat 5%), sales tax (CT 6.325% vs. MA 6.25%), gas tax (CT 35.75 cents/gal vs. MA 26.6 cents/gal) and property taxes (varies by city, but generally higher in CT) are all higher.
Justin Lipins honestly no and no lol. I was a good test taker so my stats were good, but my essays and extracurriculars were pretty lackluster. It’s obviously hard to know what exactly got me in haha, but my theory is that it’s because I made my passion for the school clear through my supplemental essays and had specific reasons why. I’m not a good writer, but I made sure I was really happy with my “why tufts” essay. Also if you are interested in Mr. Beat type subjects, I took one history class there and most of my friends did history or political science, and as far as I can tell everyone liked it!
TheCoreyLazaro oh in terms of history absolutely. Even in recent history and present day politics, MA probably comes out on top. But I wouldn’t choose what state to live in based on its history! Political significance could be a determining factor, in which case I just wouldn’t pick Mass OR Connecticut lol
Whenever I meet people from out of CT, they’re really intrigued about my life in a mansion, golfing, sailing, wearing vineyard vines, etc. I don’t have/do any of those things, people who do that are concentrated down by New York, and are really in the minority but people who see CT in the movies think that’s what the whole state is like.
In a lot of old movies, Connecticut was pretty much one of three things: that suburb that New York people lived in to get away from the big city, that place where all the New York sophisticates went to see the previews of a new Broadway show, or rural hick New England that was still accessible to New Yorkers. Notice that each of those Connecticut "identities" was informed by New York.
I'm from Mass and went to school in Ct.and travelled quite a bit abroad and in the U.S. For me , there's no other place to live IN THE WORLD than Massachusetts. !! It's the SPECTACULAR nature ! Currently we're stuck in Fl. and deeply miss the forests, meadows, seasons, colonial houses , great education and state health! Thanks for the video.🌲
Born and raised in MA, spent 6 years in CT (New Haven, then near Greenwich), now I am back in MA. The states are very similar, but much more opportunity for career advancement in MA. Boston has so much opportunity, while in CT you're limited to the much smaller Hartford, or commuting into NY which is a nightmare. Also, CT has too many damn Yankee fans...GO SOX
I'm glad that you left. Now stay out! If you lived in New Haven and near Greenwich, then you should know that no one cares about Boston or Hartford. CT is in metro NYC, so of course we have Yankee fans. Do you think we should like the Red Sox? If you think that commuting to NYC is a pain, try commuting from New Haven or Greenwich to Boston and see how hard that would be! Of course you cannot, because Boston is in another region.
Massachusetts math teacher here. I think you did a spot on job comparing my state and "New York-achussetts" as we would call it. Obviously there is only so much depth you can go into in a video, but I think you might be interested in researching the level of tourism on Cape Cod. It has gotten quite high in recent years and I suspect it is one of the more frequently visited destinations in the the country. Thanks for another great video. My wife and I find all of them so interesting!
@@diegofuentes3258 Currently living in NZ, been to Australia. It's pretty much a US-Canada relationship between the two countries. NZ being Canada, and Australia being the US, in this case.

Living in western ma, I’ve gotta say both states are great, practically indistinguishable between most of ct and western ma but south western ct is on a completely different field when compared to the rest of Connecticut, not saying it’s bad or anything but southwestern ct and eastern ma are completely different when compared to the rest of ct or western ma, we’re practically the same people here in western ma and northern Connecticut, love to those in Connecticut as well :)
👍👍👍👍👍 I’m central west CT, around Bristol. I travel to north Hampton and the berkshires for fun all the time, and new haven area-new London in CT for a lot of fun in the warmer months. I can’t stand NY city area but I love the Boston area. And I do a lot of work near Stamford and western mass doing lighting controls and Audio/Visual work. Western mass and northern/western CT rock and the eastern south of CT is also really nice.
@Harry Engel no. Only because upstate NY is so vast and spread out. There are tiny shithole towns/“cities” in north-west CT that completely throw upstate nee York out of comparison. If we’re talking about dropping areas like Torrington, Bristol, Winsted in CT, then yeah, just a less spread out version of Upstate NY and western Mass/Berkshires without as much hills and mountains.
CT native here- We invented and are some of the leading manufacturers of: the wiffle ball, the frisbee, the helicopter (Sikorsky Aircraft), and the submarine (Electric Boat). Bridgeport USED to be the manufacturing capital of the world before international trade popped off and most products and raw materials are processed overseas such as in China or next door in Mexico. Even at Sikorsky, where I work, we still *finish* the helicopters, but the majority of all the big components are now imported / contracted in other states or countries. Honestly, nowadays, it feels like nothing is ever being made here instate anymore, since all the big plants have moved further south where land is cheaper and taxes are less pervasive to business (if they are staying within the country, of course- plenty of factories are no longer domestic). Pretty soon, all the business that's done here will purely just be white collar office work, hence all the upper-middle class suburban neighborhoods being what most people think of when they think of Connecticut. Not saying that's inaccurate, that's where I've been my whole life, but there are pockets of somewhat rural areas in the northern bits, especially in the east where Storrs and my school, the University of Connecticut, is. The actual content of what goes on in the state may change, but the people that built this place up will always be the same: the majority of the population are Irish or Italian (I'm half and half) alongside the already existing British population, and when the mass migration waves were hitting the northeast in the early 20th century, a lot of those people actually came in straight through Bridgeport, in addition or rather than going through New York and Ellis Island first.
This is really amazing. Connecticut is my home state and it was truly amazing to see this in my recommendation. I was truly fascinated by what I could relate to in this video. Great job! I often visit Massachusetts and I can likely look into what you've said about Massachusetts too! Thanks, Mr. Beat!
I love your comparison videos ... i'm not even american although I lived there at a young age .. it's a great way to learn specific stuff about the states . Thank you
Outstanding video! Native Connecticrapper here. Never lived anywhere else. Mass is nice but only to visit. You should have talked about the annual spring to fall battles royal between Yankees and Red Sox fans here in CT. Another interesting note that some in New England may remember is a tv commercial for then Dunkin Donuts targeted at the entire New England Region. It featured people with decidedly thick Boston accents and photo vignettes of places all over Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island drinking Dunkin' and enjoying their donuts and other offerings. At the end someone in the video says something like "Hey, what about Connecticut?" The reply is simple. "What's a Connecticut?" Priceless commercial and hilarious for we here in CT suffering from the ultimate identity crisis and within the enormous shadow of New York City.
I don't recall that ad, as I am in the NY/NJ/CT region and NY and NJ media are out local media. Good thing - because there should be no reason that we should get Boston anything! I really wish those up in the New England are would leave us alone and stop begging for us to be down with them. We are not near them, don't sound like them and don't want them.
Born and living in MA, but lived in CT for 3 years and loved it. It reminded me of the MA from my childhood. Less developed and a great park system. I love living near the ocean in MA.
I wonder where he got his data from because in the last year the prices in CT have skyrocketed with people moving here. People who did work in NYC that now WFH are trying to live here instead of paying 2k rent for a shack in Brooklyn.
Actually population did increased the last decade. Ppl were surprised. Could be more than we thought due to influx of New Yorkers and that is due to the pandemic.
Hartford here… Connecticut has better train system. You can go from Springfield/Windsor locks to nyc pretty easy. Hartford has more homicide than New Haven and Bridgeport. Mass needs to do Springfield to Boston
As a Canadian fan from BC can you do some province comparisons like British Columbia companied to Alberta , Saskatchewan vs Manitoba, Ontario vs Quebec, New Brunswick vs Nova Scotia, Newfoundland vs Price Edward Island, All 3 Territorys compared
You missed my favorite Massachusetts fact! Massachusetts is the largest state that has its entire congressional delegation from one party! 9 Congressional and 2 Senatorial Democrats (that’s a lot of blue!)
I can't imagine ever leaving the suburbs of Connecticut, definitely agree with the raising a family here. Born and raised here and plan to raise my kids here too when I have them🙂
I find Connecticut more interesting. My all time fav TH-camr is from there and one of my fav episodes of *Supreme* *Court* *Briefs* is based there, Kelo v. New London to be specific.
Fun fact: In Connecticut, you don’t have to wear a helmet on motorcycles, and in Massachusetts you have to. Additionally, Connecticut actually enforces people should choose to wear a helmet on a bike. LOL
Went to school in University of Hartford (From NYC), spent enough time in Mass as well and gotta say Mass wins. I'm obligated as a new Yorker to hate Boston and everything related to it but CT has very little to do. It's literally the in between state of Mass and NY. Hartford and the coastal cities are all pretty dead. Mass has a lot to do and Boston is (unfortunately) a great city.
North or south worcester county? I travelled to northern worcester county for vacation this year from Germany (visited a great friend, rented a cottage). It's pretty different from what most of Mass looked like to me, but I really enjoyed the more laid-back lifestyle. Arguably some of the most chill drivers in all of Mass too lol
i live in CT its slaps - so much culture and nature, if you disagree take a walk through downtown New Haven, Hartford or West Hartford or check out Parkville Market or Food truck paradise. Most underrated state for sure, sunsets on the Metacomet Ridge always hit the spot.
@@existinginaspace8347West Hartford haha..? No. You were probably in Hartford. Nothing happens in West Hartford but bear sightings and coyotes. Hartford is on fbi list West Hartford you will never ever see on fbi list in your lifetime ever
This guy is the biggest liar I’ve ever seen. West Hartford is probably the safest place in ct, the governor lives there. If u gonna lie make it believable, just say u got mugged in New Haven. Lmao
Yay! Born in CT and never left although I do love the other New England states. I live only about a half hour from MA not near 91 but near 84 almost in the "quiet corner." Hills, small towns, fields and forests -- beautiful in the Fall. Winter, Spring and Summer aren't too bad either!
CT born and raised. I do not consider CT to be a so-called New England state as we have nothing in common and are not even ear each other. I am 24 minutes from NYC and too far away from MA. MA has nothing that I want to go out there for anyway. The only time I did go was to go to a Golden Corral, which I had in Texas. One in MA was the only around at the time, without having to go to South Jersey. The Texas one was of a much higher quality.
So awesome to see Massachusetts talked about. I live here and it’s a pretty incredible state in my opinion. Not many people talk about it but up north west of the state you can get some 3 feet of snow on one bigger storm. And then you have cape cod in the summer which is amazing and these two places are only 4 or 5 hours away for each other. Also the more west and up u go in the state the pretty it gets by a lot.
Connecticuter here. Massachussets is better, zero question and no one of sane mind would debate you. We joke that we're mainly a highway between Boston and NYC, and I would say that there is remarkably little accent variation, and the accents we have are not New York at all. Most people speak with a vaguely standard American English with some New England influences, and not all of the state is that urban. It's not really fair to catogorize New Haven and Litchfield counties as that dominated by NYC; they are both their own worlds.
Wow! Hope you live in Europe because then you won't be shocked if you relocate. You picked the four highest taxed and regulated states in the US. Ironically, John Adams would be leading the revolt against high taxes and government overreach yet again if he were living in MA today.
@@MrDocneeson it's so funny that you think Europe is any better. Wait till you find out about their hight taxes and low wages and high crime rates. There's a reason why ppl move TO the us from Europe and rarely the other way around.
Except for four years of service time in the Midwest and California, this New Haven CT native is about to become a citizen of MA. Having commuted here the last three years for work, I find it a comfortable and accepting place to settle down (at 73!). Thank you for this timely video. It gives me confirmation that my choice is a good one. Perhaps it is the lure to discover the 'new' in the familiar. I could never have stayed in California. But MA offers the kind of environment I enjoy living in. Seems to me that there is more of a sense of community here than in CT. Could just be wishful thinking...I'll soon find out.
Welcome to Massachusetts. I think you'll find "welcoming" people in both states. I also think some people in ANY of the New England six states have a bit of difficulty sometimes accepting people who are NOT "native born" to that state. That said, there are many very friendly and accepting areas in cities and towns throughout Massachusetts, so enjoy your new home state. I live just outside of Concord, MA, and have lived in Maine, NH, CA, and most of my life in Massachusetts. Oh yes, I'm also 74 yrs old.

Just go. I don't know how you commuted from New Haven to anywhere in MA, but go and stay. We don't want you nor MA people here! If they come here, drop their sports teams and accept NYC, which is the main reason you came! Once they find out that we hate Boston, they become Yankees and Mets fans.
I have lives in CT for nearly all my life. For the sports, it’s pretty much a 25% split between the two New York teams, patriots and then other. The only thing all of ct agrees on in sports is UConn basketball, we love our UConn teams
Here's an Idea. I said this in the stream but here it is. Compare the president who were back-to back eachother. Like for example. You can compare like the 25th and 26th president or something like that. I think it is something seriously worth considering. Edit: Dang this got more likes than I thought it would thanks to everyone who liked!
Originally from Newtown, CT and spent time in MA while in grad school. Overall great video, but you did leave out one important detail about CT: the hamburger. Louis' Lunch in New Haven made this American staple famous. Oh and New Haven style pizza is great.
The taxes thing in mass is outdated, it’s tax rate is actually almost exactly average and is below average if you exclude states that get lots of money from oil like Alaska.
I sincerely enjoyed this video, born & raised in MA, but have sales territory in CT 35 years. Extremely accurate and entertaining video. The two states have more in common with each other than any other two states in America I bet! Lol
I grew up in New London CT for 5 years in the 90's and I LOVED THIER SCHOOLS. My teachers were hardcore but they made learning FUN! Infact the schools in CT was the 1st time I got interested in politics and geography. CT is a GREAT place for higher education for kids.
The thing about the "taxachusetts" nickname is that it doesn't really fit anymore, with the exception of property tax Massachusetts is fairly low to middle of the road when it comes to other tax rates. Our 5% flat income tax and standard 6.25% sales tax are both 2 of the lowest in the country.
Awesome video. My home state (CT) doesn't get much love so it was great to see. One story I wish you told is the origin of the nickname the Nutmeg State. It's really wild. Legend has it that early Connecticut residents were so ingenious and clever they could create and sell wooden nutmegs. Doubly clever when you consider that nutmegs aren't even grown here. And your right to say we're basically a Diet Massachusetts with a sprinkling of NYC. If you live around Hartford your bond to here the line about being 2 hours from both Boston and NYC. Only Hartford would advertise itself using it's ease of escape. Once again, great video.
Why do some of you act as if you are bound by some creed to worry about Boston? It takes way too long to get there. Why do you always try to find places that you consider to be equal distance from NYC and Boston? Boston is no where near CT and NYC is about 10 minutes away. Boston at the closest CT point, is still about an hour an some change away.
Born and raised in the CT but lived in MA for a while a moved back - I think you nailed it with CT is similar to MA without Boston and with New York Influences (South of Hartford NY teams and North of Hartford Boston teams).
As a native of Connecticut’s rural north-central-eastern lands, I am proud to say that Connecticut, the nutmeg state (apparently named that way due to the booming nutmeg and other spice trade in our ports such as New London and New Haven in the 18-19th centuries btw) has, as of the 1st of July, 2021, our governor Ned Lamont (D) and the state senate and House of Representatives passed a law legalizing the recreational use of cannabis! The 20th state in the Union to do so! Huzza!
I’m from CT (Fairfield County, the part that everyone says “isn’t part of New England”) and I love it here. As mentioned in the video CT is usually near the top of all the indicators But I also love how close we are to other things: NYC, Boston, Rhode Island beaches, Vermont mountains, forests everywhere, etc. Also we have the best pizza
MA is literally the best state in the country. Best education, Above average infrastructure, Best healthcare and hospitals, Beautiful beaches, and tons of history. That is definitely worth the super high taxes

I had a feeling that you must live north and inland, or else you would not have mentioned MA or RI. We don't care about those corny places.

Tufts University is one of my dream colleges did you work hard and was it challenging to get in
But the taxes are noticeably worse. The income tax (CT graduated 5-7% above $10000/yr. (3% under $10000/yr.) vs. MA flat 5%), sales tax (CT 6.325% vs. MA 6.25%), gas tax (CT 35.75 cents/gal vs. MA 26.6 cents/gal) and property taxes (varies by city, but generally higher in CT) are all higher.
Massachusetts will always be better legit so much more history. It’s where the revolutionary war started
TheCoreyLazaro oh in terms of history absolutely. Even in recent history and present day politics, MA probably comes out on top. But I wouldn’t choose what state to live in based on its history!

You should have talked about the annual spring to fall battles royal between Yankees and Red Sox fans here in CT.

I grew up in New London CT for 5 years in the 90's and I LOVED THIER SCHOOLS. My teachers were hardcore but they made learning FUN! Infact the schools in CT was the 1st time I got interested in politics and geography. CT is a GREAT place for higher education for kids.
@MasterTSayge I Grew Up in Farmington But Go To Mitchell College in New London, Have to say it's a pretty nice area
Lived in Ct- for eight years, could not get out fast enough! I love FL.
Huzza!
You seem like a traitor!
I love this series! Could you compare Virginia and Maryland?
3:19 thats in Arlington MA, Arlington town hall
I’m from CT (Fairfield County, the part that everyone says “isn’t part of New England”) and I love it here.
As mentioned in the video CT is usually near the top of all the indicators
But I also love how close we are to other things: NYC, Boston, Rhode Island beaches, Vermont mountains, forests everywhere, etc.
Also we have the best pizza
no you don't, NYC pizza is far superior
@@deeznuts8659 deluded
@@mileshouston7890 no you
@@mileshouston7890 pepes takes like 1 hour to make the pizza and it still ends up meh

MA is literally the best state in the country. Best education, Above average infrastructure, Best healthcare and hospitals, Beautiful beaches, and tons of history. That is definitely worth the super high taxes
I agree because I live a mile away from Plymouth long beach.
Your current leaders didn't invent beaches and history, so why would you pay more taxes for beaches and history?
The taxes are actually exactly average in Mass.
@@luciferlucy9066 Satanists love high taxes, plays into the whole BDSM deal
I live in Connecticut. I love it here! BTW, I am a former resident of various locations in New York State.......the city, its suburbs, and Upstate.
Love to see the Nutmeg state on the channel. I consider myself very lucky to have been born and raised here.
It is indeed a fantastic place to live.
@@iammrbeat Well unless you live in New London County.

Why is that
I’ve lived in Massachusetts my whole life but I’ll be living in Connecticut soon to attend the University of Hartford. This video was very informative and helpful. Thank you!
Thanks for showing information on my home state of Connecticut.
I remember being in the military (I was stationed in North Carolina) and a guy in a southern accent asked me what state I was from, when I told him Connecticut, he said, "I didn't know people lived in Connecticut". 🤦🏽♂️
