Magnificent. Five Valenta HSTs in a row.
This is the Paddington that I remember. The engines would resonate through the entirety of the station, making it feel alive.

I didn't really get to visit Paddington at that time, back then I assumed the engines ran around the coaches like they did at Reading when the cross country class 47's switched ends, many years later mostly thanks to videos like this I can see what I was missing at terminus stations where one engine arrives and another one connects at the other end and departs. Two engines for the price of one.

There was a stabling point for locos at Ranelagh Bridge which is a quarter of a mile from Paddington. It is now a car park.

They were in the process of replacing the Class 50 locos on the Oxford and Newbury runs out of Paddington around that time. The Thames Turbos were around 18 months away from being taken into service to replace the Class 117 and 121 units and in time the loco hauled Oxford and Newbury services.

Saw the comments about paddington being a ‘real station’, kinda makes me jealous i was born in 05, only started spotting 2.5 years ago. Missed out on do much.

The perfect memories there, cheers for sharing. Subbed. I've seen many of the 90's Paddington and Reading vids and i'm still amazed i havn't seen an ex-girlfriend of mine driving a 47 yet lol. She was OC based. And man did i do a pot of spottin back then only to meet her decades later on my radio shows on pirate radio! Her vids are on my channel if yer interested hehe.

@@hughesy45108 Sorry for late reply lol! Yep, according to her she was one of 12 female loco drivers on the network in 2015, so pretty rare! Still one of the rarest jobs on the planet for ladies !! I see you've changed your channel name hehe. Where are u based out of interest?

Some complicated shunting with that rake of InterCity Mk 1s at platform 1 (I presume some sort of special); 47576 drew out the stock to release 47446, then shunted it back in, then went off fora it looked freshly painted 47806 to come on 🤔

Those IC Mk1s were part of what was known as the "Directors' Reserve" fleet at the time - pool code was "ICHD". They were given a refurbishment and used for non-VIP charters, specials, relief trains, and had some booked work on Fridays year-round and most days during the Summer timetable, but Saturdays in particular.
5 of the TSOs from this fleet (which was all air or dual-brake) also got formed into a WCML set (with Mk3 FOs and catering) for working out of Euston in place of the MK3a TSOs damaged in the 1989 Harrow derailment.
It was a smart move by IC sector fleet management, the Mk1 is more suited to occasional use than the early Mk2 stock, and many of those Mk1s continue today in mainline charter fleets or on heritage railways.

That was my thoughts. In all my years going in and around Paddington back then I never noticed a 'shunt release' move.

Not been since 93, or to Reading, so glad to remember Padd, coming off the underground and seeing the classic line up of locos on the block end . Glad you enjoyed
