Most ppl who have got into AKs haven’t got into them until about 3 years ago where AKs blew up in the states. People are so saturated with AR15 platform rifles bc it’s called “Americas rifle”. I shot my first ak back in 1998 when I was 11 years old; way before i ever shot a plastic AR15 toy gun. I immediately fell in love with the AK. Everything about the ak platform is more interesting and more exciting than the AR. Every AR looks the same and consists of mostly plastic and particularly today. AKs stand out, they have always been the most reliable and durable platform for 70 years without needing modifications to make it more reliable, unlike the AR platform in the last decades. Most of the upgrades and improvements for the AR are based off of, you guessed it, the AK platform. AR guys love to trash tue AK bc they say its much easier to find parts for the AR and the ak is harder to work on. That is true. AR parts are more abundant in America bc it’s Americas rifle so it’s more common. BUT, that’s the thing; ARs have way more parts and moving parts in general than the AK. And if you make sure to buy a well built AK from a top manufacturer, you won’t need to replace parts or get it worked on. That’s been tue whole purpose of the AK platform. People are complaining that AKs are expensive now and more stupidly, saying AKs are 5 times the cost of what they should be worth. Clearly ppl don’t understand the craftsmanship and precision that goes into building an actual AK from the ground up. Yeah I wish AKs were cheaper like how they used to be; but a high quality built ak will last you a very very long time depending on if you care for it like you should. I have nothing against ARs especially since the platform is much better improved compared to 30 years ago. But that’s what ppl fail to realize: everybody talks of how much better tue AR is now, and even go as far to say the AR is better than the AK bc of the hundreds of modifications done to the ar. But the real fact that people fail to realize, is that the AK never underwent modifications. It’s the exact same design from when it went into service over 70 years ago. Never needed modifications except modern furniture

Paying $60+ for a 30 round piece of plastic just because of the name is just as retarded as paying for any of the above brands that survive solely based on their name, I'd rather pay $20 a mag for the Bulgarian slabsides that are built by the same folks and with the same tooling and materials, and if you ask me they even look better.

Best deal going right now are the Bulgarian steel lined polymer mags (Bulgarian AK-47 7.62x39mm 30-Round Steel Lined Polymer Magazine) for about $12. Get them while you can. They are plenty tough. Gun Mag Warehouse has them.

Bakes are to collectable to use polymer mil spec Bulgarian are great, I'm not sure if they are sold but an ex yugo nation was making new steel 30 round 7.62 mags with a really nice finish. Good spring and follower for cheaper than any milsurp mags.
I usually stick with steel for 7.62 but do have quite a few circle 10 mil spec mags, I like 40 round in either and 20 tankers can be handy.
To be honest the slab tide tapco mags pretty sure not being made but I ran it over with a truck fully loaded they it hard lots and lots of times trying to mess up the lips but I could not break it no steel lips or steel anything.
Sometimes you can get rough AK bake mags on ebay for real cheap as most are in tips so they sell the body, and you have to get your own spring plate and follower but I got loads of 40 45 round 47 and 74 mags for less than 1p bucks but now you can't buy anything from Russia.
If you can find good SKS spripper clips you can get a tool to load mage fast.
Us palm is owned by cenuty now and I can't trust a mag you can't take apart.
For serious use use steel and circle 20 or similar wnr for the range use whatever.
I think the low cost new steel mags for 10 dollars are from Bosnia, they are packaged for long term stage and are made it be fittedx they will fit milspec yugo guns right but factory new steel mags so no big deal.
You can wait for rusted up mags for les than 5 bucks may have to remove the rust, paint if you can be bothered and get a new spring or follower.
You can sometimes get good deals in circle 10s but hard to find so steel and circle 10 for serious use, not worth wasting bakes as they are crazy expensive but any cheap crap should be fine for range use.
If you get good SKS stripper clips you can get a tool and you can fill them fast and make your load out lighter.
Drums are very noisy and expensive expensive one 75 round Chinese or ronny drum is OK for fun, never buy us made or Korean drums or Korean steel.
Same with coffin mags just don't bother, I would rather have 2 or 3 30 to 45 round mags that I could reload fast.
With the bolt hold open mags you will love or hate then if you hate then just sell the followers for good money and change them out.
If you get really old mags change out the spring.
Clean your mags, keep a spare fully assembled bolt, a spare extractor, spring ex pin, firing pin.
Also change out your recoil springs every few years but buy comblock new or NOS, don't buy a buffer, change your hammer spring every, extractor, extractor spring and firing pin that's new com block of NOS every 4 years.
I use 5w30 fully synthetic oil to lube and clean and its been great you can change the viscosity on the season and climate, I don't use a brads brush as all mine have CL barrels and I don't use bore cokvents and just oil and a nylon brush then wipes removes everything to a mirror finish.
Don't buy wolf over power springs, if you need a spring with more power buy a new comblock spring and if you need more power buy another cut just under half off and ad fit then remove as needed.
I would recommend everyone gets a semi auto trigger group from the nation of manufacture you can even remove the trip from a trigger than came in a kit that's FA making it SA, give it a nice mirror shine polish and it can be nearly as good as alg with no preening.
As century triggers are crap, and the harness and dimensions are not correct.
Make sure your piston is not welded and is screwed on with a small rivet though it so it has some play, if not just grind the weld and install one.
Make sure to use comblock pistol grip T nuts and bolts.
Alot of US stuff is awful. Really you want to change the internals back to all comblock and if your worried about 922r that no one checks just polish the parts, cold blue the ones that should be blue and get a US stamp for enough parts.
Filling down your muzzek device at the bottom can make it so you have a tight fit with bin rattles and adjusting the furniture so it's nice and solid will make everything rattle free, clean your rifle, make sure you sote it well in a humid or salty environment and it will be a family hairloom.
The new Zastava rifles that finally have CL barrels are great and they import 5.56
I really hope after Ukkraines war Eastern Europe can provide cheap ammo.
I have alot stacked but I don't feel like using it as I can't replace it, some Turkish ammo coming in ie A and nonon3nn33x got sold off cheap.
I would say people should buy both ak and AR15 lowers and mags.
I have been shooting PCC, revolvers and lever actions a lot more as they are cheap to reload with cast powder coat.
It's nice to have an appreciation of other firearms but AKs and comblock weapons will always be my favorite.

Good video. IMO, if the concern is to "stockpile" then there are two major criteria- A: Pricing. The ability to buy bulk and not break the bank. B: Stout and Reliable. This means a couple of things. First, metal locking tabs are paramount. Plastic tabs will NOT hold up. Second, there are some manufacturing concerns with some mags with some Croatian metal mags having improper formed base plates that will need to be replaced to be considered "good to go". Also, some cheaper polymer mags simply can't or won't keep their feed lips from cracking. So... in 2023 the mags to look for are the KCI (Korean) metal mags that can be had for under $10, Bulgarian polymer mags w metal tabs for under $13, metal Croatian mags for $10 (the base plate problem has been corrected), and new production Bulgarian mags for under $13. Good ammo from former Soviet bloc can be had for $480/1k. Cheers.

Altering the gun if mags don't fit is the proper fix. Altering magazines to an out of speck rifle is foolish, you have now created magazines that won't work well in most rifles. If you are ever in a situation where a freind needs to borrow a mag or you get a properly built rifle you are screwed.

    • @leftyhanded
