Climbing Via Myriam (V+) in Cinque Torri, Italian Dolomites | September 2020

- Our first climb in the Dolomites was in "Cinque Torri", where we had plan to climb a route called "Via Miryam" (V+/5a), 5 pitches on the South Face of "Torre Grande", but had no idea the whole thing would end up turning into an EPIC. We arrived to the summit at around 6:00 PM, an hour and 30 minutes before sunset. We had only brought one headlamp and we were so sure we wouldn't need it. We started our rappel with our double 60m ropes, but after arriving to our first ledge and trying to retrieve our ropes, we realised that the knot tying the ropes together had gotten stuck on the way down.
We tried pulling it down for about 20 minutes without luck, so then I decided to climb back up with the spare rope and try to get our rope unstuck. I only had 5 more meters of rope left before I arrived to the knot, but I had no problem getting it back to the ledge. Unfortunately, once we untied the ropes and started pulling the last rope out of the ring, the rope got stuck again and there was no way I was climb back up. The sun had set and we had no choice but to leave one of our ropes behind and continue rappelling this 140m wall only "30 meters" at a time. We ended up doing 5 more rappels in complete darkness before we finally reached the ground. After hiking for about 1 hour and 30 minutes we were back on the car. Our climb started at around 11 AM and finished at around 1 AM.

I really enjoyed the first and second pitches, especially the short traverse underneath a roof on the second pitch that I wasn't able to record. And I know, so far I still prefer granite over limestone haha

Hi Andre, nice video and nice escape. Just wondering how you managed to get down with only one of your rope ? Did you use the escaper from Beal or did you have a tagline ?
Thank you! We didn't bring a Beal scaper or a tag line, our only option was to continue to rappel with a single rope. We managed to find rappel chains every 30 meters, except for one pitch where I only had a couple of meters of rope left and I had to hang onto the wall, traverse and downclimb to a nearby bolt which I think I backed up with a nut. We had improvise and stay composed.
Well done for… that must have been fun 😉
