Building Michael Wittmann's Kursk Tiger Part 1: Construction

  • This is part 1 in a 2 part series of building Wittmann's 1331 from the battle of Kursk. I used Cyber-Hobby 9142 (slightly modified) and AFV Club workable tracks. This is a buddy build with my good friend Shane Smyth on Kursk Tigers.
    I explain the particular features I chose and why on this build, and for the most part stick to the traditional idea that Wittmann's Tiger was a later delivered early (April) with spare tracks on the turret and later Feifels.
    Special thanks to David Byrden for his assistance.

    SUPERBBBBBB!!!! Was fascinated with this build, Adam.... from the very beginning to the very last frame. This should be compulsory viewing for anyone contemplating a Tiger build, Dragon's OR any other kitmaker's, come to that. Found the expert commentary 'overlay', and picking out points of particular note or interest really helpful and a very informative production technique, too. Seems like almost nothing lost in the speeded-up process, yet covered the entire build from start to finish, in a very 'watchable' and 'holds the viewer's interest' manner. Saluté, Adam. This one, and part 2 will be viewed and returned to MANY times, and by no means, only by me!! Cheers, Adam. (Mark from the UK) 👍👍👍👍

      one quick question, how long does it take you to build from opening the box till completed, the model, not the opening of the box itself.

    • @AdamMann3D
      @AdamMann3D  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      This one only took probably 2 weeks. But that's with a full time job and doing it on camera. You can build up a Dragon kit like this in a few days if you don't have other things to get to.

    I don't usually watch these half-hour-long or more videos in one sitting, but I do when watching yours. Very well done, fun to watch, and I learned some great tips! I'd never thought of that method where you chop up the clamps and kit tools to get them to fit; that's a great one! And I might just try that white gluing technique too sometime. Those AFV club tracks seem really good so I'll try to get a set for my tiger...I want to build it soon. And yes, I'm back!

      I find this very amusing. I am 54 and recently retired. In my younger days I was a serious scale modeller, all WWII Armour or course. Member of Toronto IPMS for a short time. I remember the days having to play hockey and still have time for building. I have been watching your videos and they have inspired me enough to get back into the art. I just spent $200 on hobby supplies to get me started lol. I kept all my boxed kits from 30yrs ago stored in the attic and discovered an unfinished Universal Carrier and Leopard. ...I was actually searching the comments because I was wondering if you and Adam Mann were one in the same! Keep up the great work.@@Panzermeister36

    Hi Adam,
    Great video tutorial! I wrote you the other week about doing the AFV tracks, they are fiddley and have given me some grief but I've painted them with humbrol metal coat plus Vallejo flat earth and some reds for light rust and am pretty happy with them. I haven't put them on yet as I wasn't sure exactly in what order with the painting so did a couple of coats on the hull first, will have to look closer at this video on how you attach them to the wheels. I've also got this kit and will be looking forward to the build next year and will now be able to use this as the perfect reference, really appreciate the walk through Adam, merry Christmas.
    Regards
    Chris.

      I'e only gotten to the priming stage on this build as i work most days during the week. Eventually there will be a second video where i'm painting. I don't attach them at all really, i just ut them on like they are on the real tank.

    • @ybros6926
      @ybros6926 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I meant feeding them onto the wheels, not gluing them but the tracks have been coming apart and sort of constantly re-gluing them. Going by your video's maybe one of my problems is I only use two glues and one being quick drying super glue. Do you have an email so I can pm you some pics of my tiger build so far?

      +RandomCanEHdian Don't let the video fool you, anything white glued (Sprocket, idler, Wheels, track changing cable) comes off for paint or after base coat for detail painting. Tracks, wheels, lower hull, turret and all get broken again.

    Adam, tried to find your Google+ account to ask couple questions, so will see if this works. What do you do with leftover parts? Leave on sprue or cut off and store. If store, do you do by the different tank build? Just about finished with the build, had to go back on a couple of parts since really didn't read the directions. My hands shake so got some glue in areas that I shouldn't have. Will painting cover them up? This will be first air brush attempt so still working on distance and psi. What psi do you use? Thanks for your help, wish I had it when I build my first Tiger many years ago.

    Hey Adam, does that kit # 9142 have a diecast metal lower hull? Dragon made a series of pre assembled, pre painted 1/35th scale models called Dragon Armor. I bought Wittman's Kursk Tiger 1, DML Item No.61006 and it has a diecast metal lower hull much like Tamiya's 1/48th scale Tiger 1. I see the two mounting pedestals in the lower hull on your build.

    • @AdamMann3D

    Funny coincidence . . . I just opened my Cyber-hobby Kursk Tiger last week. Nice video. I like how you used the round file to assist in the muzzle break assembly. Are you trying to say that the pioneer tools with clasps will not fit on the hull? Still trying to understand all the hacking of the tools. Love the time lapse and commentary overlay stuff.

    • @AdamMann3D
      @AdamMann3D  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Russell Gosselin I hack up the tools because I can't do PE clasps but wanted something with more detail than the older ones provided in the Cyber Hobby kit. So I frankenstein some newer molded clasps with the old ones to fit.

    Would you recommend this kit to an intermediate-beginner modeller?
    I am 14 (8 more days, really) years old and I've picked up on this hobby very quickly, with small parts and high detail not seeming to become a bother to me. I am however, in dire need of an airbrush (which I hope I can pick up at or just after Christmas) along with some other aux. supplies.

      I think it's pretty easy, but i've been doing this for about 2 years. The late Tiger with Zimmerit 6383 was a nice easy build. If you think you can do it you should give it a try.

    • @AdamMann3D

      Sprue cutters are great but a good hobby knife is the main thing you'd need to cut parts. Sanding sticks are the best for sanding for sure. Tamiya Extra Thin for glue is a must. A nice well lit area. Everything else is great, but as long as you can cut parts, sand them and then glue them, all while being able to see you'll have a good start. Eventually other bits come. A tweezers wouldn't hurt either. Maybe I'll do a video on this to try and help more.

      +zofoblues If you haven't done any 1/35 armor, maybe Tamiya 35216. The Dragon kits like 6383 are a little harder and Tamiya is a nice gateway build.

    hello Adam,
    a few questions about thus built.
    1) I see that you use the value kit whuch is now almost as expensive then the Wittmann tiger 6730.could I use the 6730 to built the Kursk tiger?
    2) in your kit the wheels come with those links and are bound together, but in your video thise wheels show as individuals wheels. did you change the wheels? and if not what did you do to make them work?
    3) I want to built the turret #1331 would kit 6730 work?
    4) the tanker's uniforms in Kursk for Wittmann, could I still reflect them with the leather jacket, but maybe also with camo?
    5) could you advise which colors (vallejo) would you use for the cammo
    thanks in advance Adam

    • @AdamMann3D
      @AdamMann3D  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      1) yes, that is in fact a much better kit than the one I used. I would be mindful though not to use the rear plate in that kit and a different one that is included. 6730 is a command variant, so there some extra antenna and such on those.
      2) Yeah, I cut the wheels off the connectors off camera.
      3) Yes, but again mind the befehls (command) stuff
      4) I don't really know a lot about SS unit uniforms at Kursk in 43. I will run this by my friends that do though.
      5) I don't use vallejo paint to spray.

    Can't seem to locate Part 2 yet so I assume it's not ready at the moment? Loved the video and the method of your building. I got into building these Dragon & Tamiya WWII models a couple years ago and a partial stroke put everything on hold for a while and I'm just now getting back to my building again and really looking forward to it again. I just picked up the new Dragon Tiger-1 Early Production (Michael Wittmann) kit and awaiting delivery on it. Man it was rough to find and I began to think I wasn't going to get one of the kits? I have two kits I'm getting ready to start on and they are Academy's M-18 Hellcat and Tamiya's German King Tiger (Ardennes Front) 1944 kit and am awaiting delivery of the Eduard #35986 Armor update kit for it. This will be my first time working with the update kits which I'm really looking forward to and I think I've decided to go with the AFV track kits because I just don't like the cheap tracks that come in these kits. You would think what we're forced to pay for these kits today that their tracks and a few other items would be made with better quality designs & materials. What's your opinion on the new aluminum barrel kits?

    • @AdamMann3D
      @AdamMann3D  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Texas Hi-Railer I tend not to replace barrels unless it's an old 2 piece one like in a Tamiya kit from the 90's. And my advice on using update sets is make sure the kit requires it, Which in the case of that King Tiger I think you do need one. I think that M-18 might be a nice easy kit to start off with, but the Dragon Tiger you got goes together very easily.
      Part 2 is being filmed whenever I can get the chance, right now I'm about to start weathering as the paint, decals and tracks are all painted and applied. Maybe 2 weeks or so until it's done. but don't quote me on that, I'm about to go back to work.

I meant to suggest to you when you are painting with an air brush try wearing gloves this way you can pull them off after panting and you have clean hands! I use nitrile gloves and get them the next size up so you can pull them off easier! I have the same pair I bought three years ago!

      That is Wittman with his early Tiger S04, he was also in 1331 at Kursk. That documentary about his demise at CInteaux simply doesn't cover his early Tigers. He was actually in a Tiger numbered 205 in Normandy, used a Tiger numbered 212 at Villers Bocage, and died at Cinteaux in someone else's Tiger numbered 007. It's all on the internet.
      This site cites some pretty unrealible books, but it's a good start.

    How does Dragon compares to Cyber-hobby models? I thought they were the same product....thanks for sharing this video...The fact that there is no available reference on Mr. Wittmann's specific vehicle; it pretty much leaves the door open for multiple variations and one of the most annoying one for me is to find out the there's authors on the subject denying, that he actually drove a tank with the numerals..007 stenciled on the turret...Even Dragon's production models conflict themselves in this matter....Who is to know..? I've seen the clips of interviews of the British tankers who've actually confronted and destroyed his vehicle themselves, but no mention of specific details or markings that would help the modeler community with this very important issue...Also; do you (or anybody in this forum), knows if Mr. Jochen Peiper, (Wittmann's superior officer) drove a specific battle tank in battle himself..? I been working on his biography, and again, I can't come across anything complete..seems that I have to first build the story, then build the model....thanks all and for allowing me to comment here....I more than anxious waiting for more of your videos.....( I became part of a 'model building club' for many years and I miss the atmosphere and the camaraderie developed within those settings; these videos help a lot in that regard...) Thank you!

    • @AdamMann3D
      @AdamMann3D  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +El Diablo Cyber Hobby is Dragon. Orange boxes like this are low end, and White boxes are "high end". I honestly don't know anything about Peiper's tank. I know that 007 was not Wittmann's official vehicle but he did ride in it the day he died. Michael's tank in 101st SS was numbered 205. His Villers Bocage action was in a tank numbered 212, which was a long disputed fact, but some very smart guys ended up matching the muzzle break and mantlet type in a few pictures and narrowed it down.

    • @AdamMann3D
      @AdamMann3D  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +robocop So Tiger H1 is used sometimes to refer to Tigers but they are all Ausführung E, this is known as a late early E. I also don't know what an exhaust cable is, but if you're referring to the Feifel air pre-cleaners, they were being installed on all early Tigers at that point. I'm not sure if you're aware of this or not but the person I thank for technical assistance in my video description is the one of the foremost experts on Tiger tanks in the world and is Dragon's technical consultant. We have based what we think Wittmann would have used based on photographs of his platoon in July of 1943. If you have more evidence than I'd love to see it.
      I just did some googling and have decided you most likely get your information from War Thunder as they seem to refer to early Tigers as H1, and late Tigers as E. This is incorrect. The only reference to Tiger H1 was by the army procurement board in one document. Also The Feifel system on the engine deck was installed from late 1942 until September of 1943, which is around the same time ZImmerit started to be applied.
      I'm glad you're interested in Tiger tanks, but please just be aware that there is a lot of information and documentation on the Tiger. I professionally review model kits and books about it, so before you go telling people they're wrong on the internet, do some research. I suggest the book DW to Tiger I by Jentz.
