  • When I first started #3dprinting, I was looking for a design for a simple box, with a lid that could attach to it. Now, I'm happy to (hopefully) teach you :)
As a little P.S., the "correct" way to model this box would be to set user parameters and follow them. I do not do this in this video, just because I think parameterization can be difficult for beginners to understand sometimes, and this video is for beginners.
If you would like to download this file, it is available on my Thingiverse, along with files from numerous other videos:

This helped me so much when making a case for my game system, thank you!

You are a treasure, I appreciate how clear you are with directions. I really like the simplicity of these designs and how you don’t overwhelm the video with to many techniques or operations that might fly over someone’s head. Do you have any videos on getting started with Fusion? I’ve used solid works for a few years doing basic designs and I have graphic design experience so I pretty much hack my way through fusion by making SVGs and extrusions but I’d like to get some more practical knowledge and directions for basic functions. Great work!

Perfect! I was looking for a box to hold my Chic-fil-A sauce packets for Christmas! :)
    Serious!
I am new to both 3D printing and subsequently Fusion 360 and I found your videos to be a great learning experience, so thanks!

Hey, that's awesome! If you need, I also have a F360 model of a Chick-Fil-A Sauce Cup, if you need it as a reference. Just let me know :)
Thanks for the comment :) cheers

@@christophersfactory Thanks for the reply! My actual first challenge is to make an accurate, functional ESP32 on a breakout board box that has a cut out for the USB mini connector, a cutout for incoming wires. Probably above my noob Fusion 360 level... but here we go! haha

@@graphguy Hey, that sounds exciting! My experience with F360 was that it surprised me how quickly I got used to it. There are some programs, like Photoshop and Sony Vegas, where I've used them for nearly a decade and still don't know 75% of the tools. F360 is comparatively really intuitive. Especially the parameterization, once it clicks. You'll be golden ;) Consider sending a picture when you finish the ESP box! I'd love to see it

Thank you for this. It is funny but I needed ideas to work this design for something completely different and then i randomly found this video on your channel. I didnt even search dovetale videos lol

Glad to hear! I've found that this little dovetail design works great for a whole bunch of different things. Cheers

How do you export 2 stls for printing?

Can you suggest me a nice 3d printer to buy? I am a beginner and I don't want an old module. I mean I want something upgraded and have less issues!
Thanks for the video😍 it was the first video for me about designing! You made it easy to understand🌹

Can't go wrong with any of the Ender 3 derivatives. Every printer is going to have its quirks, but what I like about the Ender 3 is that it's so common that every problem you might encounter has been documented already in great detail by others. :)
Glad you enjoyed the video !

Is there a way to stop the lid from coming off of the box? Like on drawers, etc ?

Good videos. I just subbed. Idea for future video: parameterization of model with curved surfaces. I’ve tried and the model keeps “breaking” even though I have all of the constraints in place that I think are needed.

Thanks for the suggestion! I haven't done any parameterized builds yet, but that's a very good suggestion. I'll try to take a stab at that. What were you trying to design, if you mind me asking, so that I can get an idea?

Chris. I have a question. Is there a way to go back and change the offset on the lid? Mine is too loose, so I wanted to decrease the offset and reprint the lid. Thanks.

Use parameters. They make it easy

Thanks for taking your time explaining things like this. But I think this is the worst option to make a sliding lid. I worked on mine for hours until i could make a good one. If i was an english native speaker, and if i could be as good as you explaining things, i would make a video =) If you want to take my idea and do one, feel free. I extrude de box. Then i extrude three of the faces 2mm on top but in a new body. To that new body I apply a chamfer to the three inner and lower edges, using the 2 distances option, 2mm on z, 1mm on x/y. This way your lid will reach 1mm inside of the box. You just have to combine the objects. You can figure out how to design the lid with the same chamfer.

Offset don’t work on an extruded box. Tried for 2 hours
