    I love this movie and this scene is my favorite part of the movie. In my opinion she didn't leave because he changed the song toward the end. I think back to what Dan told her about his wife and about men in the industry like Dave. Greta looked out into that audience and saw thousands of women lusting for the man she loved and she knew it would eventually be a repeat of what she just went thru with Dave, he was drawn to that life now while she wanted something simple and beautiful. He loved her but they were not meant to be together at that point in his life or her life. I also think the movie was showing that love can be lost but found like Dan and his wife but in its own time. Meaning maybe that's the Journey Dave needs to take he's a lost star trying to find his way. Greta accepted that and chose to no longer be sad thinking about what they once had but instead to hold on to the good times while letting go of the hurt and embracing her own journey wherever it might take her. That was my take on it and why I found it so beautiful.

      Lbryan30 EXACTLY! Greta will always love Dave, but those words you referred to and seeing it play out live before her own eyes convinced her that her lovely Dave belongs to the world, as some people in life just do. I had a female-Dave girlfriend once, and that's really how it is. She was amazing and magical and special, and it broke my heart to see her go, but even though I cherished my time with her and wouldn't have missed it for the world, she was never really mine.

    Funny how you guys understood that ending - that he tried to do her song the way she wanted but couldn't at the end and so that's why she left.
    I don't know, but I just think that she did get the version she wanted (it's at least very different from his album version), and that's why she looked happy, but then realized that it still didn't change anything. when she looks at the audience, that's what she sees. That no matter how hard they'll try, everything's changed, and it can't go back to the way it was. so right there, she's letting go of him, and it's hard (tears) but it's ok to let go and move on, she's accepting that they both changed, and she's kind of relieved at the end.
    That's how I actually understood that scene.

      I agree. totally with your point of view. He tried to play à more authentic version of the song but even with that she realises nothing will ever be the same... so she leaves him... so so sad when i saw his face when hé sees shes gone :/

    The sad part isn't Gretta leaving, its the look on Levine's face after she does. Pure heartbreak. Honestly didn't think Adam Levine had that level of acting chops.

      Jon Parker if you listen closely, you would notice a 3:47 that he sings a falsetto note, that he didn't used on any other part of the song, that note shows the sadness he feels and his struggle to finish the show after that. All with just one little note.

      Got to call you on this
      I think his look at the end isn’t heartbreak
      I think it’s admiration of himself and his love of the audiences reaction
      He’s content with who he is
      He realised he can’t make her happy
      He’s a rock star
      Didn’t take away from his acting ability
      In fact it supports it that it’s a good acting performance as can be read in many different ways

    This movie is amazing. Keira's face on those zooms when she realizes that she just cannot be with him anymore even while he sings the song the way she wrote it to be... heartbreaking. And Adams reaction when he realizes that she left - killed me.
    I highly recommend everyone watch this movie. One of the great underrated ones of 2014. Great music, great talent (look at those actors! Knightley, Ruffalo, Steinfeld) wonderful message about staying true to yourself.

      i disagree....he did sing it how she wrote it, but (early on) when she saw the connection between him and his fans, she knew that she needed more than he could give and walked away, for both their sakes---she wanted to grab the guitar, but out of love and respect left him to remain in the spotlight alone

      alexander magill I'm sorry but I totally disgree bro. He sang in her way but only the first half of the song. And then in second half, he destroyed the song, she realise that he can't be the same old Dave anymore. That's why she cried and left.

      Dương Quân …i disagree quan..if that was the case i don't think gretta would of ever showed up to see dan perform. whether the first or second half of the song is irrelevant…dan cheated on her..that was it for. her heart could never return or be the way it was. gretta found closure at the end…

    As a huge film buff, I have to say that this is one of the greatest ending scenes in the history of cinema. I will never forget the uplifting feeling that I had leaving the theatre, and then driving home I just felt so motivated! This movie is one of the greatest films ever made, for every reason that makes a great movie: acting, script, soundtrack, etc. Sadly, it is one of those sleeper hits that will not get talked about and will be lost in the shuffle. However, you can tell that those involved with the film already know this and could care less. They know that they made a gem and, eventually, it will find its audience.

      although i understand your sentiment i do think you are underestimating difference in tastes people have. i for instancen liked the ending but found the overall movie to be a bit too cliched and underwhelming, maybe because i didnt resonate with the music at all (i thought it sounded like any normal pop song, nothing insane like they show in the movie)

    He did the song exactly how she would have wanted... She was ecstatic but the she noticed the reaction of the crowd and realized that he is truly a star that will always be tempted by worshipping fans... Notice she frowned when she noticed the reaction of the fans... She remembered what she was told earlier in the movie by her new friend that knows first hand that rock stars don't stand a chance to give her what she needs to feel secure

    I love the sequence of the change of his facial expressions..... the smile when he realizes she showed up and the glimmer of hope in his eyes that everything might just be okay and when he nods his head at her asking her to join him at stage but she doesn't the first time, he begins to lose the smile; fear of losing her he makes a sharper nod at her almost pleading her to join him on stage but when she doesn't, he realizes that things might not be alright between them and he pours the last ounce of his energy in the next few lines of the songs only to break down when he realizes that she is gone forever... thats how i read those seconds of their interaction and absolutely in awe of the the way it was directed :)

    • @nealorr5086
      @nealorr5086 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Actually, he doesn't even notice that's she's gone. The last time he saw her, she had a big smile, then he broke into the stadium-rock anthem version, and she starts to cry and walks out. He slightly turns his head later, but not enough to see the side of the stage where she was, because he's totally absorbed in doing the rock star thing, regardless of her wishes (which is why she left).

    My Thoughts are that she looked at all these women and thought that this wasn't her and Dave's song anymore. These women were dancing to and soaking in these lyrics as is they were theirs as well. Greta specifically tells Dave that this is THEIR song, but now she is looking out into the ocean of people and sees that its not anymore. Personally, I think thats why she left. Also he did change the song back kind of at the end too which I believe is part of it.

    it's actually really simple why she left... She asked him not to play that version of the song to see if the man she loved was still the same person who would respect her wishes and to see if she there was a chance for them to get back together. She was proud and happy and had hope when she went and he started with her version of the song. But once he started going into his own version she noticed that the industry turned him into someone else and there was absolutely no way they would be together again and all in that moment when the tear fell, she realized it and was at peace with it all in that 3 Secs... That's why she left.. He showed her when he switched the song up he wasn't the same person. He was still the guy who cheated on her

      I think you're right but I don't think that the way he sang the song was what made her leave. He kept it acoustic and as a ballad. But I think she just realized she couldn't go back it was just done. Adam is famous for his falsetto, that's just how he sings.

    • @KingxK1NG
      @KingxK1NG 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Sheena Khan It was definitely the way he sang it that made her realize she couldn't go back. You can see when he started sing through the first verse and chorus she was happy and smiling. But starting the second verse the lights came on, people started clapping. It started to get more pop as it went and she started see people hands wave and you seen on her face that's when her smile went away. If he would've continued to sing how he did when he first started then like I said in the post, she would've seen he was the same person she fell for before the fame. Him singing the song the way she asked him not to was what made her and him, realize that they want two different things. She wanted him before the fame, and he couldn't let go of the life he has. So its 100% the way he sang the song that made her leave. If you watch it again you'll see her whole facial expression change halfway through the second verse when it starts sounding more pop.

      +God-King Leo Damn you're right. Kiera crazy, I would have thrown my panties at him! lol just kidding. I thought it sounded awesome, I've heard folky singers like Bob Sieger, Bruce Springsteen, Joe Cocker hell even Axel Rose, get overcome and get super soulful. That song sounds soulful, not Pop to me. Yeah he was dickhead in the movie, but I thought Greta was a little up tight. That song gives me chills. And Coming up Rose breaks my heart. Last year my son was diagnosed with Down Syndrome 10 days after he was born, and that song just really helped me through it.

    • @SAKluvsMAKEUP
      @SAKluvsMAKEUP 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Sheena Khan King, it's hard to explain, I guess because it's music, how it was heart breaking and I cried so many years listening to it. Yet it helped, and was restorative.

  • @joshuadimayuga4400
    @joshuadimayuga4400 9 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    Meaning of the ending:
    She did not like his new music as she explained before that their music was first soulful, but now the industry over-composed his music and changed him and his music prowess. So when he told her to visit his live session, she expected to see him singing her song the way she wrote it. She was first happy, but found out at the part with the high notes- "I thought I heard you out there crying..."- that he was slowly building up to the way his musicality changed. This is because her version was smooth and meant to be sung low, though he changed it, added background instruments, and changed that specific part of the song into high notes. Compare the two versions and you'll see the difference. Anyhow, this shows how she now knows he's not the person she thought he was, crying over it and leaving him; in short, they do not get back together. This refers back to the title, as now they two will lead a new life separately and "Begin Again" just as her producer did, reuniting with his wife and daughter.

    A few days ago I told myself 'I haven't seen an actual good movie in a long time". After a lot of convincing from a person dearest to me I finally decided to give this film a shot (last time we had it on mom turned it off so we never got to see it). This was one of the best decisions I've made, maybe even just for the day. As a person who has a deep love for music, the movie spoke to me in a way that I never expected a movie to speak to me (the way music is able to). This scene put me to tears simply because the resolution was a simple one: sometimes you just have to lose your greatest stars because they no longer guide you to the path you're meant to be in, and sometimes you have to make a decision to reach for the stars instead of waiting for them to align. It's so raw and real... And basically what is lacking in most commercial art forms nowadays. I recommend this movie for those who love music, those who are trying to figure life out and anyone with the time to spare :)

    My favorite part is how no one is really wrong - except for the part where he cheated - in their perspective about music. While it's easy to disregard Adam's character as a sellout, he truly believed that music was something to share with everyone, and if a rendition made it 'shareable', then so be it. And he believed Keira's character would come to believe the same if she were to see it personally - she didn't. But Keira wasn't wrong either, she was the same - being true to herself and to her song. Truly a bittersweet ending.

    ill explain what is happening in simple terms. yes the guy still likes the girl, but he is so inlove with himself, career and fans and thinks it didnt matter to the girl. but the girl knows that the guy''s love for himself is too much, and becuase of that they dont belong together, he belongs to the world, abd wouldnt be the guys she expects him to be just as simple as they were before he was famouse

    She did get the version she wanted at the start. However, there are two ways to look at this scene.
    One is that he started to pick up the pace and she realised that he still hasn't changed. So she left.
    The other way to look at this scene is that she realised the crowd was enjoying his version of the song better. She then realised she was the one holding him back. Therefore, she left.
    Both scenarios are of different perspectives and paints who the victim really is.

    Amo ver cómo todos tenemos una perspectiva diferente del final. Cuando lo ví la primera vez con 13 años no entendía, ahora que la he vuelto a ver, pude entender que ella perdona lo que le hizo, pero simplemente lo deja ir, cada quien por el camino que los apasiona, a ella componer y el de él, la conexión que tiene con los fans cuando está en el escenario, ella entendió que era lo mejor para los dos que cada quien viviera la música desde su perspectiva y que tendrían que comenzar otra vez pero cada quien por su lado :c

    @Courtney Reynolds She had asked him to play the song the way she wrote it, a simple ballet, he agreed to do it if she would come watch him. He started to play it the way she wanted, but slowly it built into his album version, which she thought was overproduced and hated. She realized he had changed and yes I guess couldn't forgive him. They use to write music for themselves and not care what people thought, and by him going with the album version it proved that she didn't know him anymore. Hope that helped.

      I want to agree with you, and I really check carefully when Keira changed her facial expression, and it was not started at any moment with the change of the song's style, not at the moment when the lyrics of "I heard you out there crying" but before that;
      Another point I want to make is that, the style of this version all along is indeed smooth, and the whole song has been already not the same as the one Keira demanded him to change in the earlier scene, I do think Adam tried his best to "orginize" this song, but as much earlier scene mentioned that Keira has good intuition in interpreting music at the soul level, perhaps she sensed something have been different, and indeed for this song, when they arranged and taped together, they shouldn't be lost stars, but now they are which is indeed ironic; and for us audience to perceive, their relationship has been different, indeed there is scars in between their relationship now;
      there is also a scene which Keira looked at the audience and looked sad before she left, as mentioned earlier in the movie that this should be the song belongs to only two of them no matter how it arranges, it is hard to explain but I do understand there is more sense of insecurity added in the relationship when experiencing the song (only belongs to them) has been performed out to audience, and I would conclude all these factors as the reason why at last Keira has left.

      Yup, I agree with yours more, but not Cheyenne Kelly's, although my words seems similar to hers anyway..
      I mean, her(Cheyenne Kelly) words seems quite elaborated at the level of music style/music taste/music attitude (hmm... it is hard to pick the right word) , and I do not think a couple would really because of such a reason and give up their relationship. More to point out is that Adam has his beard shaved, I think it is a hiding meaning from the film director that Adam has returned to the way he should be in mentality, therefore I do agree with your reply not focusing on the music style/music taste/music attitude which Cheyenne Kelly seems focused.
      I do hope you are right that Keira, besides forgiving Adam, do think they could be couple again. (of course I mean in the film story:)

She realizes she can't be what Dave needs and Dave can't be the partner she knew. So she decides to walk away before both of them are really hurt.

    I've been married for 31 years and it always seems like people break up and find someone new, someone that they haven't shared a lifetime of memories with. This story to me is about how Mark Ruffalo's character is still in love with his wife. He can't "Begin Again" because he has never gotten over her. He helps the young singer and even though they almost get together, but her friend pops up behind the fridge, I was so happy they went that direction with the movie. But he does share the headphones with her, which was a special thing between him and his wife, but I don't really think he ever wanted to have a relationship with the young girl. When he was back with his wife on the bench listening to music, I just started crying. Later when I explained it to my husband, I started bawling. He just didn't get it. As for the young singer and Adam Levine's character, when they stood in the kitchen and she just starred at him, she KNEW just by the way he couldn't look at her that he had cheated. I LOVED that! And the slap....wonderful. But he had written a new song for the new girl, the song he sang at the end "Lost Stars" was the song she had written with him. Someone thought it was the same song. And when she told him she didn't like the beard, and then he shaved it, I think that he was telling her he loved her and wanted her back. I LOVED this movie and the soundtrack is GREAT!

The best part of this movie...they didn't take any easy roads....ya know..everybody jumping into bed with everyone else....too easy. In life, sometimes we do "miss out on purpose"....Yes..the beard being gone....was very telling....YET Dave still couldn't help being who he was.....a lost star...feeding his eGo & loving the limelight. Everyone saying this and that in the comments lol, it wasn't that he was a star or the girls would always be after him, she says it before in the movie herself 'this was THEIR song' she was upset that he had used it in his album and shared it with other people. That was what hurt her and even though he did it in the acoustic version like they did the first time when they were together she got nostalgic about it and seeing him achieve his dreams at the cost of their relationship, the shot of her looking at the audience isn't about jealousy, it's about sadness that he violated their private couple song that she wrote for him and him singing it for others. Jesus. It's like no one was paying attention in the movie or what

      Carney uses Chiaroscuro in this scene to emphasize the beautiful women up by the stage and Gretta's sadness. In the scene Gretta was smiling then the camera pans to the beautiful women and then Gretta has tears in her eyes. Earlier in the movie Dan tells her that guys like Dave can never make women happy. That they fall in love with the road, the women and success. So what you say is not completely true. You needed to pay more attention to the movie

    Can't go back through everyone's comments so sorry if this has been pointed out before, but so much of her tears and departure is tied to Ruffalo's character saying to her earlier that she was living with a rock star, all that time he didn't know it, but now he does and he's in love with it--the road, the adulation, the chicks--all of it, and he will never be able to make a woman happy. She sees that during the performance--the adulation of all those women and his love of being performing for them all--if he could leave her once he'll do it again with so much worship and availability. Think she's wishing him well, but knows it can't be ever what it was. Loved this film.

    Gretta attended Dan’s concert hoping that they can reconcile, but as Dan started changing the song, she realized that they can never be together. Not because of Dan’s different rendition, but because she saw his audience in awe. She knew he was a star, but it would harm her if she gets too close. I see the way Dan changing the song as them starting on good terms once more, but the same thing will gradually begin again, so she chose to leave at the end.

    I always interpreted this scene as this: when he's first playing the song, her arrangement, he's playing it for Greta he's thinking about her. When he notices she's backstage, he watches her while singing. But then the crowd got really excited, he slipped into the arrangement of the song that the crowd likes, and from there he completely ignored Greta, no longer giving her glances from stage; instead the camera shows us where his focus is: the crowd. In that moment, everything else stops mattering to him, even Greta, who he was initially trying to win back with this performance. Greta realizes in that moment that in this kind of life and who he is now, he will likely still choose the fame and fans over her every time, she isn't his focus anymore, he doesn't even notice Greta leaving, even after the song ends he doesn't think to look backstage at Greta, and her leaving is her accepting that she's no longer his priority, that the fans are, and moving on with her life.

    Guys... Many of you people think that the reason why she left him during the concert was not because his song didn't please her. Also the song that he played was the Lost Star in Ballad version. The reason why she left was because, as she saw the crowds enjoying and dancing to the song that was more like a bridge to their relationship, she had realized that the as the song's identity(only between him and her -> everybody enjoys it) has changed, their relationship has inevitably changed, and it is time to let him go.

    I think he stole a very personal part of her and she may never forgive him or ? I think just for now she is going to trying it on her own and maybe she may find a way to forgive him in the end, but they will never be what they were in that moment in time when they were together in the beginning and men that is what counts in love and not betraying each other and then expecting us to love you like we did at the start, because now you have stolen the innocent part of our relationship and one that can never go back to what it was before....no matter how bad you want it to! Don't get me wrong a relationship goes through changes the longer we are together, but betraying each other is a very hard thing to over come if ever!

    She didn't leave because he didn't sing the song her way - he did, she left the concert because of the female fans (the camera scans the adoring fans), she does love him and his happy that he has his dream) but he cheated once and may again, once a cheater, always a cheater!!! She has self respect and knows she can't be with him!

    This beautiful song was the perfect ending to a moving Movie!! Adam Levine should have won the Grammy for Best song and Mark Ruffalo should have won best supporting Actor.

    I feel like no one else notices that his second nod to her is aggressive. He looks very annoyed.
    The first nod seems genuinely inviting. And when she declines, he takes offense and nods again to more aggressively insist that she come up on stage.
    He doesn't care about her, he cares about a great performance. And how good it would make him look for her to come on stage.
    His mask slipped and she saw it in that nod.

    funny how a song he sings in a movie is way better then all his other music.

      I wouldn't say "all" his other music, but most of M5's recent stuff is lacking the originality their earlier stuff had. Adam is a great writer when he wants to be and sugar pop producers aren't involved.

    I think its about David try to breaks up with Gretta, even David knows how hurt it is for her, it is for better. "I thought I heard u r there cry" it is about David hating the reality that Gretta having a good time making her own songs.
