I got turned onto Devin Townsend through hearing City by Strapping Young Lad. At the time is was the most aggressive, abrasive music I had heard and was a real eye opener. Townsend turned out to be super versatile and fluidly skilled.

Great video! Devin is my favorite artist of all time and his songwriting choices are definitely worthy of a lot of admiration.
Some of my favorite licks/riffs are By Your Command (dialogue tapping section), Stormbending (tapping solo), Coast, Numbered (arpeggio section), Planet of the Apes, The Mighty Masturbator

Had the chance to see The Devin Townsend Project twice. The band was top notch and Devin was very funny and played very well.

Great stuff! I think the huge sweeping orchestra-like arpeggios are what really struck me about Devin's playing. You can hear more of those in the song "Deep Peace."

Devin is the musical omnicient ...... and if there are 2 musical omnicients.... Devin is both of them.
He's a virtuoso.... and probably one of the most humble and funny people in music.
We are all lucky to have musicians of this level giving us music is SO many different styles to keep our minds and hearts fresh and inspired.
Thanks for the video content.... this was a brilliant exploration of using open C to make our collective guitar playing toolboxes that much bigger.

Such a great choice for a lesson… DT has so much talent and creativity that it is almost depressing at times for a multitude of reasons, mostly because I can’t do what he does and because he is so unknown and underrated.
Also, I don’t know if you’ve done anything different for this video or not but you guitar sounds like a giant monster cello that has been possessed buy something otherworldly. And I do mean that in the best possible way.
Thanks for another great lesson, Dave!

Thanks for covering Devin! I think he is absolutely brilliant. Surprisingly I haven't seen anyone else analyzing his style. Probably the fucked up tuning.

8:17 - Ki... not Zi. The outro vocal on the track is devastating.

I guess I mixed up the titles of 'Ki' and the 'Z²' album.
      Whoops! Sorry folks.
      Yes, it's totally 'Ki.'
      :) Rock on!

Great stuff as ever David. I'm trying to get hold of your Shape Shifting book but can't seem to find it anywhere. Any tips as to how I might get hold of it (I'm in the UK). Cheers and keep up the great work!

This is so very close to the opening of final fantasy 2. I wonder if he took inspiration from it.

This is super useful for me, because I am tuned to open Cm and DT shows the way lol. I am a beginner so I am not fluid, but there is a LOT I have discovered in this tuning, it can do all kinds of cool stuff if you have some ok technique (working on it!)

You should continue this tuning and do some Led Zepplin tunes.

I looked up the songs Jimmy recorded in C and there's only a few. He used way more than C or D tuning. I was surprised.

Devin Townsend is the closest thing modern music has to Frank Zappa though that is still a poor comparison that doesn't properly capture the individualism of either artist.

Great lesson, David. Devin's music is so inspiring, I'm glad you took the time to make this video. Someone else you might want to look into is Arjen Lucassen, the mastermind behind his project Ayreon. He's got some interesting keyboard-like guitar parts and layers in his work, especially Run, Apocalypse, Run and The Castle Hall.
