That ride was SO much fun! I'm 67 now and that was my first bike. Bought used in 1968 and rode for years. Happiest day of my mom's life was when I sold it! My best friend had a YL1E and he used to tease me about NOT having an electric start. Both my mom and my best friend are now gone but the memories live on. Dave
Had one as a kid. Just picked up a 1957 in red with 185 miles on the odometer, and ready to tackle the restoration. One of the bikes that stoked my love of motorcycles that continues to this day. I'm 70 years old and I have a 1963 YG1 and also a 1965 Honda S90. Great bike! Martyn Edwards
I just loved mine .... I bought it in 1978 and had so much fun! From the side it looked like a moped (but with twice the horsepower). Sit at the lights, nod the poor sucker who pulled up beside you on his FS1E or some other 'nifty fifty' blip the throttle as a challange, then when the lights changed, scream away leaving them bewildered in a cloud of two stroke smoke. Happy days ......😁
I bought one of these new in 1968 (in red). Shaved the head, shaved the bottom of the pistons, put slightly bigger carbs on it and changed the carb angle to a straighter line, and went to a total loss ignition system. IT SCREAMED! The sky was the limit on the rpms. God I would like to have another one of these. Thanx 4 da vid!
I bought a used YL1 in 1971 when I was 14 years old. I rode it all around Midwest City, OK until the transmission seized up. I had many fun adventures on it including taking my girlfriend on our first date without being chaperoned and a 100 mile road trip to spend the weekend with some friends.
Thinking of the moped I was given and finished (if it only had some gears...) the 2 stroke sound brings back memories of my buddy's 500 triple that we used to switch riding from my CB 750 to his bike ( we were always dead even in acceleration). I came upon your vid. Really nice, and what a pretty place to live too. Mike
In '67 had a Suzuki X6 Scrambler, in Cycle &/or Cycle World a man from Toronto drove his "Twin Jet 100" to L.A. along with his Surfboard"...Was at ISU in Terre Haute, the only place he got a speeding ticket on his trip! MEMORIES!!!
I bought my YL1 brand new in November 1967 at the bike shop on Forest Rd Hurstville. It was black and chrome. Cost around $500. I used to ride it to work from Hurstville to Kent st Sydney every day for about 9 months. Easy to lane split and from the front of the traffic left all cars in our wake smelling the 2 stroke smoke. Served me well and didnt miss a beat up until I sold it a few years later after 25k miles for $250. I still miss it.
*Rhiannon!* This is my first Yamaha in the late sixties but it was red all over except for the chrome front mudguard which was the same. That sound brings back memories, oh boy. / Dad
There was a 90cc version with a bore of 36mm instead of 38mm (both 43mm stroke). I believe the 90cc version was sold in California USA and was set up to produce only 4bhp to meet the California legal definition of a mini-bike, which you could ride at a younger age than other motorcycles. The 100cc YL1 has an engine number beginning with 134, the 90cc version engine numbers begin with 132. Most of the engine parts of the YL1 have part numbers that begin with 132 because they were first used on the 90cc version.
If the carburettors and ignition timing are correctly set, the engine will not blow up. I did tens of thousands of miles on a YL1 that was tuned up a bit, including 100 mile stretches at 70mph. I never had any engine problems. The crankshaft has very large bearings and is almost identical to that of the later RD125 except that the connecting rods are a bit shorter. The bore and stroke are 38mm and 43mm respectively. The RD125 is 43mm bore and stroke.
Hi mate, great videos about your YL1. Reaching out to you as keen to make contact with you. We are located in Castle Hill and I take it your bike is the one that was listed on gumtree a few months ago from a guy in Blacktown. We are in the process of restoring a 1965 model. 90% complete.
stinky ninja1 ahhhh very cool guys! Yeah this was the one in blacktown. I’ve done a lot of work on it since then. Actually have the whole rear end off right now doing new hub, brake, chain and sprocket. I’d love to see you 65. I’m in Baulkham Hills.
@@classicbikeenthusiast3595 beautiful to see im not the only one who has a thing for these, i live in the USA and these guys you don't see as much, although i love 2 strokes, almost bought a 76 dt400 not too long ago!
This was not a diminutive bike in its time. Because the riders were typically teenagers weighing less than 130 pounds this bike could give the average family sedan a run for its money. I had one. I got it up to 105 mph one day in ideal conditions. Scared the h_ll out of me, but I did it. Great memories.
luved yammahas in early 70s always wanted 100 had yammaha 75 cc similar to the handa 50 shape was 15 at the time in uk 125 were awsome and the 200 better noise than a honda
I own an l2 which is the same bike but for the indonesian market and it has a single cylinder 100cc instead of the twin jet. The bike rides very nicely but I would agree completely that those drum brakes are scary lol.
Crikey, I paid overpaid! Bought mine for £6 in 1976 and then paid £9 to Rafferty Newman for a piston to replace the origin, which had a hole in the top..

Lovely bike. Bought one 2 years ago. Let my son drive her home and he loved it. So now we have 2 twinjets. :)

Jerry Houck sounds like it would be a quick little bike!
Some people souped them up, got almost 100 mph out of them . There are needle bearings in pistons and rod lowers. Engine was about 10 HP
I have 1 too. But it’s a 67. It’s black and original paint, looks good 👍. Sold new at Yamaha in Harvey, North Dakota, USA 🇺🇸

This was my first bike! Loved it. Better carry plugs when you ride as it's a two-stroke. Now I have a D-Class ebike that brings back the memories.

Great little buzz box used to do 60 mile trip.to visit girlfriend on , many adventures as it was as old as me 18yrs at the time 👍
When I was 17 I had a Suzuki 150 twin. The guy down the street with the YL1 always kicked my arse when we raced.
I had one when I was like 12 years old I love that bike I wish I had it now
I owned one of these. Yeah. 1968. My first motorcycle. Fun.
I recall when these were brand new. A ground breaker! Smallest two piston two exhaust ride ever.

Had one and took it sand racing at Mablethorpe back in the day - excellent
great video. That bike runs like a champ. Always loved the twin jet
I had a twin jet 100 in 1970. I loved this bike. I did fine out that if you go over 55 mph for 20 miles you will probably blow the motor.
If the carburettors and ignition timing are correctly set, the engine will not blow up. I did tens of thousands of miles on a YL1 that was tuned up a bit, including 100 mile stretches at 70mph. Lovely bike to ride.

Greetings from the Netherlands

My brother had one but it was bored out to make it a 125cc they are fun noisy bikes.
I had one in the 80s it spent all of its time on 1 cylinder, and when the other cylinder came in it would flip you over the back .
That 100cc wouldnt flip much
My very first bike....rode the piss out of it.
I had a Suzuki AS50, very similar looks when I was 16. Fond memories. Lovely bike yours.
First bike I ever owned. Bought it in 1972 for £6
Crikey, I paid overpaid! Bought mine for £6 in 1976 and then paid £9 to Rafferty Newman for a piston to replace the origin, which had a hole in the top..
Tube una d esas del año 70 un maquinon!👍💪
Teikei or Mikuni carbs? 1968 must be one of the first Yamaha twins like t hat
The YL1 has Mikuni carburettors.
I meant 1967
How much
Esto fue en mexico
Use synthic two stroke.it barley smokes
Fica c0
Sounds like a chainsaw ....
I got to ride on the back of one in 68. Very fast. What is the top speed of these twin jets?
An unmodified YL1 has a top speed of 60 to 65mph, or around 100km/h. It can be modified to go considerably faster.
