It's just amazing to spot some of my classmates in this video!.. 30 years have past since then!! Where are you now, Julia??.. Our school was pretty close to this McDonald's and we would often skip that long line as the staff already knew us well:) I'm not a big fan of fast food, but I still keep that souvenir badge as a memory of the opening of this restaurant. For us, who had never been abroad before, it was like a tiny window into the western world back then and the charming smiles of the staff made this 'trip' easier! Though, honestly, it was the international Moscow Music Peace Festival in 1989 (for the first time in the USSR!), when I and thousands of people could taste the freedom in the air, which was also depicted in Klaus Meine's immortal hit 'Wind of Change' released a year later. A lot of famous rock and pop musicians such as Motley Crue, Ozzy Osbourne, Bon Jovi and others took part in it. It was so unusual to see some of them walking down Arbat street or even playing the acoustic guitar just like ordinary street musicians! Unforgettable moments... Thanks for posting such a nostalgic documentary!

The smiles made it easier? I was watching a different news report on this and one of the staff said people questioned her why she was smiling, she said they thought she was laughing at them. Made me think smiling was uncommon over there.

2022. The era of McDonald's in Soviet Russia just finished. The tiny window into the western world is closed and dissapeared along with remains of freedom.

@@murienrouge Freedom has always been limited in different countries in different ways. Don't think you are so free in America and don't think Russians are not so free. It just depends on what when and where. Think accurately. Do you want examples? There are many. Mcdonalds is not the most important thing in life sorry to spoil it for you.

Let's be fair, these last couple of years they've gotten better on making sure they work again thanks, most likely, to a documentary here on You Tube on the Johnny Hayes channel. I think McDonald's responded by making things right in improving the maintenance of their ice cream machines. The name of the video is "The REAL Reason McDonalds Ice Cream Machines Are Always Broken". It got 12 million views and 550K likes so far since it was released three years ago.

Thanks for this material. The nostalgic rememberings about first soviet McD has been discussed lately in several russian social medias. However, i'll share this material. Never knew or saw how all this happened (im russian but lives far from Moscow), just saw a couple photos and some video piece what people think of such fastfood innovation back in the days.

McDonald’s no longer exists in 🇷🇺 today due to the war in Ukraine. Right now, all 800 restaurants re-opened with a new name: “Tasty & That’s It” without the Big Macs and Chicken McNuggets.
