The funny thing, 30 yrs later, I can contest that I was in that very LOOOONG line-up in year 1988 on Pushkinskaya street! I was 6 yrs old & me + my mom flew from Kishinev (Moldova) to Moscow to get her first eye surgery (another FIRST in ex-USSR!). I remember that line-up & asking myself what the buzz was all about: was it some kind of "super food from America"? We had to order soooo fast that we ended up with a very random order. I remember vividly analyzing every strand of fries as to see what's so special about them....Now, in Canada for 26 yrs, I don't even notice Fast food chains....ah, those were the days.....

First McDonald's in communist world was open in Belgrade 1988 ..it served 6000 people in one day which was then record for europe..but because culture here was different ..people like to sit and chat long there were employees which only duty was to make sure people only eat and go ..and when relationship with US got a twist in 90s that same McDonalds was set on fire by angry mob

I had a teacher when I was in high school tell a story about when in college he got to go on a trip to Prague in what was then Societ-controlled Czechoslovakia and got detained after accidentally wandering into a place where he wasn't allowed to go. The only reason he didn't get imprisoned for wandering onto a Soviet military base was because he was able to bribe the officers with bottles of Coca-Cola and Levi brand blue jeans.

I'm a social studies teacher, and this was EXCEPTIONALLY well done. I probably would have to edit it to show students (the f-bombs and what not), but this would make an insanely great companion piece to studies about the liberalisation of the USSR and eventual collapse under Gorbachev and the reformation and rise of the Russian Federation under Yeltsin. Excellent, excellent work.
