Gorbachev: The Final Hours - ABC Prime Time Live (1991)

แชร์
ฝัง
  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 4 ก.ย. 2018
  • ABC's Prime Time Live special report on the ceremonial end of the Soviet Union on December 26, 1991. Ted Koppel is given access to Gorbachev in the Kremlin for his final official days as head of the USSR. Events leading up to this are also reviewed.
As a history documentary, it's less insightful and analytical, and more dealing with feelings of the moment from an American perspective.
Recorded on December 26, 1991 on a RCA VR671HF VHS hi-fi VCR via an average cable signal from WBRC 6 in Birmingham, Alabama. Includes commercials.

In early 1990 I've seen Gorbachev in his visit in Ottawa, Canada.
Gorbachev was the man of the 20th century. The man who disassembled the iron curtain of Lennon and Stalin. I hope some day another great man does the something to the American iron curtain. I believe Gorbachev was a great humanitarian man.

His actions wasnt meant to dismantle the soviet union, but reform it. The constituent Republics had a different mindset. I don't think the doctrine of communism was at fault for requiring this reform. The 1900's was a tremendously difficult era to live through, with multiple wars, geopolitical tensions, rapid innovations in science, technology, and society. Had communism been executed differently, the outcome would have been radically different.
In the 2000's, we are seeing unprecedented rise in inequality, crippled generational personal growth, rising cost of living, declining birth rates, extreme climate change, massive public debt being carried forward and a certain population of old mindset thinkers stuck running things for far too long.
The end result of communism in the Soviet Union was 15 fractured republics pondering their ideology of society. The end result of capitalism is going to send us back to the dark ages.

Soviet union was in various difficulties not only in 1991 onward. After revolution, civil war agsinst the kulks and the foreign-aided white guards left soviet people to unimaginable distress and suffering
Yet, the soviet union raised from the ruins. Socialist spirit, under wise leadership of stalin and countless party comrades and volunteers, took up huge reconstruction work and made the whole country a model state in the world.

"What is the difference between the statesman and the politician? The politician thinks about the next election but the statesman thinks about the future".
And that is true about Gorbachev too. He tried to save the system, but the system was unsavable. He paid the price, all over the world leftists despise him for what he did. They don't understand, that even without him, USSR would have collapsed. Or would have remain communist only by name, as is China today.

    • @A350flyernyc
      @A350flyernyc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I think the reason he is despised is not the fall of communism, but the break-up of the union. Now, nations that used to be close to one another are enemies (Russia and Ukraine, Chechnya, Nagorno Karabakh, etc) Gorbachev is blamed for breaking up a centuries-old union, though many of those who despise him for that do agree that communism had to go. I personally like Gorbachev (like you said, most of this wasn’t his fault) and think what Russia is doing today is horrifying and tragic. But it is important to realize that had the USSR’s collapse been handled differently (like if the new union treaty passed and the coup didn’t happen), a lot of this could have potentially been avoided.

I am a ‘leftist’, but I’m also a fan of Gorbachev. I think he was a genuine man who had the interests of his people and country in his heart.
I am a socialist. I don’t believe he dismantled socialism or communism. I think he attempted to dismantle a kind of fascism/authoritarianism that had taken hold in the ussr since the 30’s.

Slowly introduce people to the new system, new ideas, show them how to succeed under the new system.

Neil Peart's Purple Nose But we can still turn that around. If we the people stop letting these corrupt politicians use us, we can take back our country and make it for the people again. But, it must happen soon before it’s too late.

USSR became concentrated in Russia. No loss. Russia as countervailing power vis-a-vis USA. Keeping USSR intact was internally possible. USSR was pregnant with problems of internal frictions that wounded USSR severely. Don't blame exotic forces.

If there was no loss, then explain East Germany, Ukraine, and all the other breakaway states? Internally possible or not, it didn't happen, the USSR broke up, and hypothetical arguments are irrelevant now. Did you even look at the facts before commenting?

More than 40 years Comm.Party USSR was against of entire West and especially against USA and was in so war, named cold war. But on December 25 1991 the Comm. Party Fell and stopped, this hostility. The new leaders of USSR began to met friendly with leaders of USA. They speak and joke as good friends. When Yeltsin met with Clinton and speak about the fell of Comm.Party, Yeltsin said: We did not lose anything, you lose the enemy that was hate you. Clinton could not stop of laughing. But unfortunately the administration changed and the evil and hostility returned back as how was before. The main reason before was the envy and it returned, because it is a sin and it come from devil. People must fight against it and not accept this sin which lead to murder, how did Cain.
