True there's no Scottish folk group to top the Corries. I've listened to them for years, from when they were a quartet with Paddy Bell. I live in Argentina, but my homeland will always be where I was born, Scotland.
I'm 81now, but have never forgotten my roots, I still manage to visit family in Scotland most years, and I think I leave a little bit of me there every time. The Corries music takes me back home each time I listen to them. Only one out of four left now, very dad. Grateful thanks for the songs.

Hello Paul Scotty, many thanks for your text, I'm quite moved by it. Aye, as always we Scots have to " stick together " , strange ,wherever we go, people seem to take to us. Even after the Malvina's war, we're still loved by the Argentine people, not so the lot south of the border. Whenever I'm introduced to someone here by my wife, first thing they say is " William Wallace, and of course, kilt, and whisky " walking, even in town, somebody across the street will shout, Hola John. Susie will say , " who's that, I haven't a clue" . even Susie feels more Scottish than Argentinian.
My family in Scotland love her, as her family here do me, so I'm very blessed. Please take extra care during these terrible times.
      God Bless. 👍👍🌹🌹👍👍

When Ronnie was interviewed on Travelling Folk some years ago he was quite clear that neither thought this was a good version and in terms of tempo they changed it in 1969 to the more familiar version. Personally , I liked the bouzouki and drum and the more evocative medieval feel that this version has .

Norwegian I am. But Norway´s great composer Edvard Grieg (the Peer Gynt suite) was of Scottish heritage.
Anyway struggling up the hillside of Ben Nevis in August 2017, I was determined to sing Flower of Scotland, one of my favorite songs - on top of the cairn. I did with all my heart. A great experience on the highest point of the United Kingdom.

Fact about where the video is filmed
The video is filmed at ruthven barracks, where after the battle of culloden Charles Edward Stuart told what was left of the jacobite army to head to the barracks for safety and to form a plan. He however had fled to skye.

Despite what's been said, I was a student in Edinburgh from 1963 to 1965. I used to hang out in the Waverley Tavern down the Royal Mile and listen to folk music. Unfortunately, I forget the name of the guy (I'm 71 now) who arranged hootanannies in the 60.s and also produced records I think for Waverley Records but he organised a hootenanny folk concert in 1964 in I forget which hall, could have been Leith but I think it was further north, at which Roy Williamson introduced the maiden performance of "The Flower of Scotland".. It was romantic, emotional & evocative.
In 1997, I was in New York (I'm Irish-born, now Canadian) with a Welsh friend on St Patrick's day at Tommy Makem's pub, drinking Guinness and enjoying Tommy Makem himself playing on guitar some four feet away. He had asked for requests, so I slipped a note for "The Flower of Scotland". He acquiesced, and to my astonishment, I heard behind me, like the witches' chorus in MacBeth, two older Scottish ladies singing along with tears rolilng down their cheeks.
That was the last occasion I enjoyed "The Flower of Scotland" . I Love rugby and the song mehas been adopted as the Scottish national anthem . I remember the original nostalgia, yearning for a better life, not necessarily separation or independance.
To me, it's a bit like singing along (as I used to) with the old IRA songs until you realize that some people take them seriously. and cruelty results.
Having said all this, the Corrie Folk Trio were brilliant and Paddie Bell was a gem. Long may we miss her sweet, trilling voice.
    The 60's were great.

Please don't equate a modern wish for Scottish independence, with prior violence in other areas. That is unfair, however you feel about it.
I don't like this song as an anthem. I love it as a simple plea for standing up for ourselves.

This is the way I first heard this song.
Witten in the dirge/pibroch style, lamenting our past, rather than the way most know it as a battle cry.
To me, if a national anthem for Scotland is needed it should be another corries song, "Scotland will flourish".
We should be looking forward to the future not dwelling in the past.
But this song and the Tay boat song will for ever take me back to seeing the corries in both concert halls and small village halls of my youth.

One day I'll get to one in Scotland, but Neath is seriously like nothing I have ever seen before. You feel such an extreme reverence of time itself in a place that is so old, even though it is in ruins - it is still an ever lasting reminder of the people who built, and used it.

I was unfamiliar with this version til recently, and i CAN'T stop listening to it... and i weep every single time which makes it impossible to sing along.
That rhythmic pattern is deceptively complex but it sounds so effortless, and the modal melody/harmony choices strike as hard as the lyrics.
    Majestic. Passionate. Solid. Wounded.
    Glorious.
Precisely what Scotland has become to me.❤

From UK to Croatia, this song is loved by many English, just like myself and my late Father who brought me up with it,it may be about a battle but don`t you think the Corries would be sad to see your post, that the Irish,English,Welsh ans Scottish still have such animosity, this hatred is what rules the World today and drives people with your attitude to hate rather than see each other for what we are, lost souls striving to be better than our ancestors, this music means the World to me and I hate to see it used politically though I see why,I hope one day this horrible racism will cease and we will finally learn we are all the same,no one will ruin this song for me.

Yes, a classic, and there is no greater honour than having a song adopted by Jock Tamson's bairns. A more recent contender is Caledonia.

Lovely rendition by the writers and original performers. I am surprised by only 130k 'views'. I perform this song and also have a TH-cam vid of me performing it. Friends of mine (who knew the Corries) said they didn't like the adversarial theme of the song but I pointed out (as a Pom with Scottish ancestry) the words, 'those days are gone now'. I love the simplicity of the song which says so much.

Sorry, but I can't help thinking your friends are a "bunch of wimps". Perhaps you should play them ""Scots Wha Ha'e" by The Corries on You Tube
( both songs are about Bannock burn ), & give them some reality??

such a great song, one of the most beautiful 'anthems' of the world. some of my mixed ancestry is Scottish, but it's always been the blood I feel closest to in spirit. have traveled parts of Scotland on several occasions, from Edinburgh to Glasgow and the Isle of Skye. Spent a semester at the University of Edinburgh as well. Not too bad for a Texas boy like me. The music and scenery and stories of the Scots raise the hairs on my neck and I'm proud to claim some small part of that heritage as my own.

    When will you part
and let the sunshine through ?
    to brighten our day now
    and end this dour weather
    that's depressing me
I need some blue skies to cheer me up again

Scotland owes Ronnie a great debt for this inspiring song. I'll never forget the hearing it for the first time in Ediburgh (I think, in the Ussher Hall). The audience were struck dumb for some seconds before the applause exploded.

Roy thought it was to sickly sentimental and kept it to himself, until Ronnie heard it and insisted that they play it. The rest, as they say, is history. Saw them twice in the mid '70s. Two memorable evenings.

Great: earliest rendition we have, I think. I remember visiting Ruthven Barracks in 1995 and even then I think some of what you see had crumbled a bit. I'm really keen to learn this - I have a new Irish bouzouki (typical GDAD tuning) but can tell from this that Roy's highest note is roughly B and he's using an opening tuning, essentially as a drone for his finger picking. I think he's got a Greek bouzouki but would love to know if any experts out there can enlighten me. Possibly Roy tuned things down to his own preference for this.
