saw them last summer at Download festival sorta by accident... I didn't even realise they were playing at the festival until I wandered up to their stage while they were playing! they were incredible, definitely deserving of a bigger stage next time.
2 vocalists. Xen, the harsh vocalist, is the band's founder and the lyricist. Tim, the clean vocalist, also plays violin. The drummer, Dan Presland, has a YT channel with playthroughs (and live ones as well) for every song of theirs, and even some videos where he just sits and comments on his own videos explaining the techniques he's using in that video. The band's name is not made up haha, it means "forget not" in Latin as far as I'm concerned. And finally, some song recommendations: Forget Not, Intra Venus (there's an official music video for this one), Painters of the Tempest (Part II): Triptych Lux, Eyrie. Overall a great reaction, it's always nice to see the constructive commentary from a musician. Really looking forward to more of these!
To be fair, I'm only now hearing about them. I don't really keep my ear to the ground regarding metal music but I've still found some lesser known bands through the years -- ne Obliviscaris continued to avoid my radar though.
The Violinist and clean vocalist are the same person: Tim Charles. He's a classically trained violinist and a pretty good singer too. Tim looks like Jesus The harsh vocalist is called Xenoyr. Xenoyr is the opposite of tim, he's a Black Metal guy, oddly doesn't like progressive metal very much, yet he's formed a god-tier prog metal band. Xen looks like the antichrist. An angel of death. There's a great live video of this song. Honestly their live sound is almost studio quality, which is insane for this music. You're right in that it's not as time-focused as typical prog, but I think the inclusion of so many layers, the use of two vocalists, a violinist and the heavy draw from other genres really brings a different aspect of 'prog' to this band. I feel like they're tailor-made for my taste too. It's insane. Also the name is Latin for "Forget not". Your pronunciation is good.
You're right about the layering being important. While time-focused prog is definitely the most well-known style, prog can be anything that isn't the status quo. By definition its anything progressive, anything that pushes the medium in new directions. I don't really remember what I said regarding it not being heavy on time changes (I hope it wasn't negative) but I agree that layering is a technique that is certainly "prog-y" and they utilized it exceptionally well on this track.
Check out Rivers of Nihil - Where Owls Know My Name Fantastic musicians, refreshing take on tech death. Personal favourite album of the past couple of years.
You’re amazing dude. Actual critical and knowledgeable reactions for once! Most of these reaction YT’ers pick the mainstream music and say “that was good but idk why” 😂 thanks for not only choosing great technical acts but also giving a meat n potato’s review. Good man

oh to listeon to ne obliviscaris for the first time again. i've been chasing this album on vinyl for months, ever since i got my record player but its understandably sold out everywhere
Late to the party here, but this album had their former bassist, Brendan "Cygnus" Brown. Him and the band split ways due to personal reasons. His playing is so clean. He has a current band called Infinity Density if you want to check out more of his stuff.
I see you reaaaly liked this, the band that kind made prog-death metal, or popularized it, is Opeth. They have a great bassist, a lot of creativity, riffs, cleans, and deep ass growls. i see you like long songs, so listen to The Drapery Falls from the Blackwater Park album (2001), no words to describe this song, Ne Obliviscaris definitely were influenced by this. I urge you to listen to this, and maybe, review it.
It works be cool to have whole album review of that one. I feel like singling out just one song takes away from it when it's not in context with the rest of the album
Had to subscribe bro. As someone who’s moderately musically literate, I found your reaction and analysis to be a breath of fresh air. There are so many bullshit reaction channels on this website. This is not one of them. If I may add a suggestion : Wilderun - The Garden of Fire. I would suggest something off of their new album, but it should honestly be listened to in a single sitting.
Reddusk Ironsky I cried by listening Pyrrhic, another song by them... i feel you, mate. Every song of Ne Obliviscaris is just drop dead gorgeous and makes you cry from their sheer, raw beauty
Clean singer is the violinist (& kinda more the "frontman" if they have such a thing). There is a live video on YT which is worth a watch to get more context.
I’ve seen them live 3x and have not been disappointed once. They sound incredible live. They have a new bassist for a few years now but both bassist play great and add another compositional element. Both bassist have YT channels where they do playthroughs of NeO(Ne Obliviscaris) songs. Watch this song live in Denver on YT. Another great track is Devour me, Colossus live in Sydney.
NeO songs will be studied by next generation of musicians and composers. Unreal musicianship and virtuosity from all the members. And the drummer dude, Dan Presland, is a Beast!! Whoever listens to NeO becomes an instant fan. Anyway, bro you should really invest in a good open-back Headphones, something like GRADOs to truely appreciate spacial & layered music common to progressive metal and Jazz-Fusion
First video I watched from you was Ants of the Sky. I was genuinely hoping you would react to this song specifically. Beautiful song. Absolutely one of my favorite song period

Another Australian band that is really quite good is called Illyria, they are from Perth, Western Australia. Swansong, wilderness or The Carpathian Summit are really good tracks to check out
Ive had the pleasure of seeing them live multiple times, and they are all brilliant, but drummer Dan Presland i believe is from a different planet 🤟🏼🤟🏼 so effortless, and in the studio has the ability to absolutely nail the drumming tracks in a single take. 10+ minute songs, no mistakes 🙌🏼

Hi Bryan,- thanks for your reply to my comments and the suggested playlist for Operatic Symphonic Progressive Folk Metal. Please note that many of these bands and songs are by now staples of reactors and could potentially attract a lot of traffic to your channel (hint, hint), especially if the Nightwish and Epica armies decide to stop by you. Enjoy what´s coming.
Their drummer (I believe it’s spelled Dan Presland) has some insane endurance on the drums. He has a channel where he does a makeshift “podcast” of sorts where he talks about his approach, technique, practice/training regimen.
Nice reaction dude, you earned yourself a sub! This is an amazing track.. I would love to see you react to some Wintersun! Their song "sons of winter and stars" or "Time" from the Sonic pump studio rehearsal! Would be cool to see your opinion on those, make sure to do the sonic pump studio videos.. Peace

Devour me, Colossus (Blackholes) or Painters in the Tempest (Triptych Lux) if you want to hear something truly stunning from them in terms of musicality.. But the thing about this song is despite its long length for your average music fan, this song is so hooky and well written that most every reaction channel that I have seen listen to them ends up loving it. Not Ne Oblivsicaris related but check out Vektor-Recharging the Void or Forest of Legend for some intricate and epic progressive thrash with a touch of black metal thrown in.
I'm digging your reactions and your breakdowns of composition. Keep up the videos and I'm going to have to throw my favorite suggestion in the hat and recommend The Czar by Mastodon 🤘
You probably wont see this, but the band Xanthochroid has some very good songs in the same vein of this style, you should check out their song to higher climbs

I'd love to see you reacting to some Dissection, you should listen to where dead angels lie or thorns of crimson death. It's in my opinion the best album ever made.

Right? I'm sure there are "better" basses out there but if I only ever owned this one until I died I think I'd happy. It's just such a solid instrument and sounds great no matter what type of music I'm playing.
Funny thing is, this is exactly what these guys sound like live… seen them live twice and they are precise and on point beyond belief.
I would like to also confirm they sound fantastic live. They are on point as hell.

Obscurity Rectangle come on, intro Venus? I almost thought their bass player left when I hear that song, it’s a cringe work for their own standards

This band is so obscure. I was roaming spotify and I found Forget Not. Fell in love fast
I randomly got Forget Not in my Discover Weekly list back in 2014 and quickly fell in love with their sound.
