    Hi Bruce, 78 years old and thanks to you I have learned more about small engine repair in all my other 76 years. Since I enjoy that sorta thing, thought I would give it a try. Someone brought me a 22" Craftsman so I started tearing it down. About half way in, I found it had a big hole in the block. Not a good start but now I have a parts bin started. How are you so lucky on your curbside finds. Thanks for all the good videos.

    For a seized piston, one ounce of Marvel Mystery Oil in the cylinder and stand it on its rear end for a week (piston up). If it won’t start after that, it’s a parts unit. That was my dads go-to process. He had a masters in mechanical engineering.

    I had the same problem. Was a broken regulator spring in the carb. Spring was expensive. So I used a rubber band, that was about 15 years ago, mower still running great...

  • @kjrchannel1480
    @kjrchannel1480 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    That happened to me once because the cylinder was a lot of oil in it from improper storage and too much oil in it. Realistically for most people if a mower runs they could care less and easily give $50 for one to get the job done.

    What is that red squirt can you use to squirt gas in the carb with called?

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is just an oil squirt can with 2 stroke gas in it to lubricate the piston. It is 50-1 gas oil mix. Straight gas is too lean. Thanks

    I was wandering why you didn't leave the wheels and the handle bar on the deck. It is a newer mower or it looks that way. Put another engine from a pressure washer or a different mower and fetch a good price for it ??

  • @johnr.6029

    Bruce - Help. My Craftsman riding mower will not freewheel. I cannot push it. I pull out the transmission/trans-axle lever on the back of the mower to disengage it, but I still cannot push it. The wheels will only turn in opposite directions. What is wrong? Thank you.

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can you try to pull out the lever and jerk the tractor back and forth. Check the linkage on the lever too. Sorry I am not there.

  • @garymachen7354
    @garymachen7354 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Bruce I work on lawnmowers too and, is it possible for the magnets in the flywheel to lose magnetism? I was working on a mower with a Briggs engine with no spark. I replaced the coil with a brand new one, set the armature gap, everything looks good but no spark.

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Does it have points??? Also check the wire that goes to the spark plug. Sometimes it is a simple problem that trips you up. Keep me informed. I am always curious.

    • @garymachen7354
      @garymachen7354 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't believe it has points it's not that old. The new coil comes with the plug wire so I assume it's good. I didn't have a flywheel puller and I couldn't find the one I made years ago. Now I've seen your hammer and pry method of removing the flywheel. I didn't think it was safe to hammer on the end of the crankshaft, but if you're prying up on the flywheel I guess it's ok.

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the old Briggs manual show it that way. Can you take out the spark plug and check to see if you have a spark when it is easy to turn over. Disconnect the kill wire off the coil and try for a spark. A ground on that wire shuts the motor off.

  • @fredstanley5758
    @fredstanley5758 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Hey Bruce, just out of curiosity, if those engines are "a dime a dozen" would it have not been economically feasible to put a complete used/salvaged engine on the frame and resale the running mower instead of just scavenging parts from it? It appeared to be in relatively good condition and seems like there would have only been minimal time investment involved, just wondering. Another great video, thanks for sharing! 👍

    Bruce,I recently was given a like new craftsman 4 cycle snow blower and the engine seized up tight. Any ideas on how to free it up? I have soaked it so far withPB Blaster penetrating oil, but no response yet. Marvel Mystery oil maybe?

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well If it is a flathead you can take off the head and use a wooden handle and tap the piston down. You could also put a adjustable wrench on the shaft (being careful) and give it a GOOD tug. If it is an over head valve remove the valve cover and make sure there is no valve in the cylinder and then do the same. Just make sure you don't crunch anything worse than it is.
      Good luck

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would only get about 5 dollars for it either way. They call the metal" mixed " so just the weight of what I took off would be the difference. The value of the parts is well over $150

    Save the deck and wheels. If the deck isn't bent it's worth it, and if the wheels spindle hole aren't wallered out then worth keeping. Bare mower decks actually stack up really compactly

      @robbie These engines are aluminum bore with a very thin oxide coating that hardens it enough unlike a iron sleeved automobile block. It's done and toast, once you are thru that oxide layer which is microns thick then the aluminum wears away super fast.

    new rod? polish piston pin with 1500 grit so it slides thru little end of rod and piston pin boss sooooo smooooothly .
    drill out oil hole on big end of rod for MORE OIL... re assemble with new gasket set... 20-50 oil with 20% STP OIL treatment. E BAY STICKER .... CHECK THE GD OIL BEFORE EACH RUN OF THE DAY.... write on it 20-50 oil ONLY!!!! 20% STP OIL TREATMENT.

    Nice video but we want to see carnage! Crack open the case and show us the glitter.
    I had an old rusty Toro I probably bought for my dad like 30 years ago, but the motor was solid. I look through yard sales and ask friends to get me a decent deck to replace it. One day I go to Lowe's and they have a yellow tag on a mower up front for $30, no coil and no blade, but otherwise looks new. I get it home, throw a blade and a coil on it, add oil and gas, it starts, but quickly smokes up the whole yard, and it has almost no power. I dump the oil and it looks like brown glitter glue, crack the case and the rod end has like 1/8" slop, the bore is trashed and so is the piston. Looks like someone ran it for like a whole season without oil, then brought it back for warrantee. Oh well, slapped my dad's old motor on it, ran it for like 7 years till the crank seal started leaking all over. By then I had 2 other mowers waiting to be cobbled together into one good one.

    Sure cure for a seized engine is a mixture of marvel mystery oil and diesel fuel 50/50 mix.... Pour it into the spark plug hole tip the mower back and let it sit for a week, it will be unseized... But if there is internal damage like a bent rod the engine is toast, I have never come across a engine I couldn't unseize with that mixture, great video.

    I don't have a garage to store a lot of stuff, so in my situation, I would have gotten everything I wanted to keep off the engine, removed the engine, and left the rest intact. That way, if I encounter a mower with a good engine but a rusted-out deck, I could possibly just do an engine swap, and ready to go!

    I got a free husqvarna awd with keystart, almost brand new mower, the man thought the engine was seized turned out the inner deck was bent and the blade hit it and stopped the engine cold, I saw what had happen, the flywheel key was sheared but replaced the key, bent the deck back out and replaced the blade, and it runs like new, ended up selling it for 350.

    i usually pull the engines off like you and when i have time strip them and seperate the aluminum. if i bring complete mowers or tractors i only get 4 cents a pound for light iron. if i seperate the aluminum its worth more coin

      Also any extra carbs I have, I clean and rebuild whats needed and stock them for a quick change-out and keep rotating them. It speeds up the repair. also do the same with recoil starts for rope or recoil spring replacement .

      @BrucesShop  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have to confess that about 1/2 of my stashed carbs haven't been cleaned but i mark on them with a sharpie which ones are cleaned and not cleaned.

    Yes, lots of goodies. Clean em off nice and put them away. You know they'll go to good use. Best part is that you got it to run, so they've been tested. I think I would've popped the lower pan and cylinder head off of the engine real quick just to peek inside. At that point, in for a penny, in for a pound. I would end up laying awake wondering what got toasted in there. lol! Yea, I'm sick like that.

    • @jonmyers8046

      Well our economy has slipped so i think the mowers are coming out from the back of the sheds or from under the decks.

    Well, that's too bad....Yeah, the parts to repair that engine would far exceed its value for sure....Unfortunately, little Briggs are just throw aways....I remember having seized Briggs come in the shop without a drop of oil in them, just freed em up, added oil, and gave them back to the customer....No guarantee of course...But, never had one come back blown up...Couldn't do that with tecumsehs...That thing was really bound up, would love to know what was messed up inside...

  • @derekobidowski5784

    If its damaged beyond repair it can be repowered by another engine but Briggs and Stratton discontinued the model 9 or 3.5hp and 3.75 hp engines and replaced them with a cheaper OHV engine. my bet is if u have a Harbor Freight store in your area is to get a Predator 173cc Honda clone engine. if the crankshaft is long it will fit your deck but some mowers they have a shorter shaft in which u have to shim or put spacers in the mounting bolts to raise the engine up higher. as you can't bet them much better engines than Briggs being now Briggs and Stratton is putting PLASTIC camshafts and timing gears in these engines they fail and the valves don't work. best of all these predator engines run great i have one on my mower still kicking after 3 seasons.

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It was something I picked up from work. You drop something and it is so loud it has to be something heavy. To make humour we said I dropped my watch which wouldn't make any noise at all. I just say it without thinking about it. Thanks for picking it up. obscure humour.
