If we're contented with saying that what's going on in Gaza is "awful" or any other synonym then, I think it's unlikely to garner enough public support and pressure to end this by any means.
Lots of awful things are happening in the world but, I think that the majority of people (particularly those who aren't too politically engaged, or rarely take in what's going on in the world) would !metaphorically shrug their shoulders and assume there's nothing to be done about it, seeing as there obviously isn't the political will to intervene in every awful event globally.
Using the "G" word signals that this is no ordinary event, grabs the attention, and hopefully begs the question: what can or should be done about it...?
The answer being that, we are signatories to the G convention, which mandates us to take action. Not just while it's happening or worse still, after. But also beforehand, if we suspect it's about to happen.
Just because the caller moved the goalposts each and every time a valid point was made, or just outright ignored the point altogether, doesn't mean we should bend to that kind of evasion. Just point out how many of the criteria your interlocutor has completely swerved, and end the conversation there. Folks will soon see who's being honest and who isn't...

Also, most modern Israelis have been born in Israel.
Israel is a reverse diaspora country. People come from all over. Some do come to Israel for legitimate reasons. My ex-girlfriend's dad's family was expelled from Iraq upon the creation of Israel and were effectively left with nowhere to go except Israel. However, many show up for the opportunity to exploit the power dynamic and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in order to obtain land. This is particularly true among American Jews, from what I understand.
