To be fair book 1 had a double murder-suicide. This show has been viscous since the beginning. Even Combustion man and Roku in the original. People point out the Earth Queen, but Avatar has been killing off characters since the first show.
Been literally waiting for this episode since Book 1 of Avatar, ever since you asked the essential question, "Can't you just like pull someone's air out they lungs?" or something to that effect. I'm so proud that this fandom keeps this episode on lock for new fans.
To that effect, at the end when you mentioned Katara pulling the water from Aang's lungs: isn't it so satisfying to see that technique/concept across bending disciplines, even though one used to save a life and the other to end it?
People who watched ATLA "couldn't waterbenders use blood. Nah it's a kids show they won't do that" And then they did! People who watch Korra Book 3 "Evil airbender, damn. Imagine if he could kill someone by sucking the air out of their lungs. Nah, they won't do that" And then they did! Avatar's magic system and writing can be so cool because they tackle things everybody would consider.

It's low key crazy how the red lotus is treated more like characters and not like villains. They're actual friends outside of being villains which is so rare to see. Usually villains don't get chitchat. They get dialogue that revolves around their plan and that's that.

Remember when Aang sees dead Gyatso surrounded by 15 dead firebenders? There is no fire damage. There was no fight. It's assumed that Gyatso did THIS VERY move, except he covered himself and 15 other people with it suffocating everyone. And because air is canonically invisible nobody could see or do anything as they just started dying and dropping. Just... any time someone underestimates wind powers.

I'm sure someone already mentioned this but a lot of people think Monk Gyatso did that suffocation move to all those firebenders he was surrounded by. It's kinda too bad we'll never get to see the Fire Nation assault on the temples. It would've been a hell of thing to see all those Air Benders fighting with lethal force against a literally existential threat that could not be avoided or redirected in typical Air Bender fashion.
imo this episode and the next 3 rival the best arcs of ATLA. Episode 11 is my favorite of the entire show. I see where you're coming from like how can anyone or anything top Zaheer as a book 4 plot? my advice might be to experience book four as an epilogue of sorts. It's much more about Korra than it is the villain and it has some incredible character stuff for pretty much everyone. It's sort of a tribute to the themes the show has been delving into for the first three seasons, and a heartfelt conclusion to a long road. I love the final season and it gets better every time I watch it. Excited to see your reactions and analysis as always.
That's a great way of looking at it. I think season 4 does work a lot better as an epilogue, and it does have a much narrower focus on Korra herself which I always appreciated.
This episode is the Reason Everyone Said, "Just Wait Until LOK Book 3," Part 1. I never did understand why the writers didn't have Mako bust himself and Bolin out, or at least give a reason for why he couldn't. We've seen him hold a welder's flame before. He used it to help break Tenzin and the kids out of their restraints when Amon had them captive. He could've easily removed the lock. Reason #1 Zaheer is NOT an airbending master: Every airbender understands that nature abhors a vacuum. When you create a vacuum, the nearest fluid will rush in to fill that vacuum at the first opportunity. Human nature also abhors a vacuum. And nothing is more fluid than power. The power that fills the vacuum is almost always worse than the power that was removed to create the vacuum.

I like that Korra and Asami had to work together with the ship crew. This was the best season because it showed Korra helping ordinary people and her growth as a character
The Red Lotus/White Lotus (as Zaheer explained in an earlier episode, the Red Lotus is basically like the original White Lotus) is pretty interesting, I like how it specifically showed them break the wall that we have seen since ATLA, dividing the poor and rich of Ba Sing Se, and I wonder how many past Avatars were a member of the White Lotus in the past. (Also there is a real historical White Lotus religion derived from Buddhism and Manichaeism, which is about the prophesized next Buddha, Maitreya, and it is quite interesting too.)

zaheer has shot 2/2 when it comes to kills right now first iway then the queen, mans cant miss. he been on demon time since episode 1 of the season. Tonraq is wat i call a master ice bender. he is in the top tier of water benders seeing as his family line is the royal bloodline which also makes korra a Water Avatar Princess. strap in cuz you not ready for the rest lol.
i suppose it’s a good problem to have, but LoK really did create some interesting characters but not give me enough time with them- i want to know so much MORE about the red lotus
i'm sure there's comments about this same thing here and elsewhere, but now feels like an okay time to mention that the fan theory of what happened back before ATLA when the fire nation attacked the air temples, is that monk gyatzo did a similar move as zaheer to basically remove the air from the room he was in, killing a few dozen fire benders and himself. if you look back at the southern air temple episode, you see a lot of bodies in the room with gyatzo but he isnt burned up.
God, this episode is so great! Also nah nah nah nah nah; you'll love the last season too, for sure! ALSO also, this taking-breath-away is probably what Monk gyatso did if you remember his skeleton sitting serenely in a tent surrounded by a dozen fire nation soldiers' bodies waaayyy back in ATLA season 1 episode 3 Oh, and adding to what others here said about the show being partially online - that was for US Nickelodeon, a lot of people on here are pretty sure it did air in their countries (europe mostly probably, altough I didn't watch korra back then so i can't corroborate it personally)
I love how the writers manage to sprinkle in gruesome on-screen character deaths, like the murder-suicide of season one and the Earth Queen's suffocation, and yet they're for whatever reason not allowed, under any circumstances, to say the word "death" or "kill". Mako didn’t try firebending the bars until after Zaheer made his announcement because they were being watched by guard patrols. They’d’ve found out before they could escape and would’ve stopped them.
This episode and next one are probably my 2 favorite episodes of LOK lol so I had to get the membership… plus on top of that, where you’re at with AOT certainly helped with me deciding to go ahead and pay for it lol

The Earth Queen was a despicable tyrant who needed to be removed from power, but it’s still difficult to watch a person suffocate. Zaheer is a great antagonist not only because he clearly means business, but a lot of what he says makes sense. The problem is he’s not concerned with the ramifications of his actions. Rigid order causes a lot of suffering, but so does complete chaos.
Been so hyped to see the reaction to this episode. Aege's face looked exactly like the queen's when she got got. Super excited to see your reaction to the next 3!!!
Yeah this he was pretty profound for Me Too! He pulled The air out of her lungs and then made a vacuum bubble so she would suffocate. This isn't holding your breath this is the air removed from your lungs you would Run out of oxygen very fast the countdown would be pretty much what you have in your blood because he pulled all of it out of your lungs. This makes air benders one of the most powerful peoples if not the most powerful peoples. This scene is only 2nd to the small scene when haku froze the 5 fire benders solid solid you're made of water why not just freeze them solid to the bone and he seemed to be able to do that faster than the suffocation so that makes it a little bit more lethal.
"There is only... darkness." Bryke really tried to censor themselves there like they didn't just kill the queen. They had a murder-suicide in the first season, they kill the earth queen in this season, like, c'mon bro, just give us the entire length and have the voice actor say "death".

zaheer has shot 2/2 when it comes to kills right now first iway then the queen, mans cant miss. he been on demon time since episode 1 of the season. Tonraq is wat i call a master ice bender. he is in the top tier of water benders seeing as his family line is the royal bloodline which also makes korra a Water Avatar Princess. strap in cuz you not ready for the rest lol.

i'm sure there's comments about this same thing here and elsewhere, but now feels like an okay time to mention that the fan theory of what happened back before ATLA when the fire nation attacked the air temples, is that monk gyatzo did a similar move as zaheer to basically remove the air from the room he was in, killing a few dozen fire benders and himself. if you look back at the southern air temple episode, you see a lot of bodies in the room with gyatzo but he isnt burned up.
My health is finally getting better and this made my day- been waiting over a year to see you react to this episode so glad you enjoyed it!

Oh, and adding to what others here said about the show being partially online - that was for US Nickelodeon, a lot of people on here are pretty sure it did air in their countries (europe mostly probably, altough I didn't watch korra back then so i can't corroborate it personally)

I love how the writers manage to sprinkle in gruesome on-screen character deaths, like the murder-suicide of season one and the Earth Queen's suffocation, and yet they're for whatever reason not allowed, under any circumstances, to say the word "death" or "kill".

The Earth Queen was a despicable tyrant who needed to be removed from power, but it’s still difficult to watch a person suffocate. Zaheer is a great antagonist not only because he clearly means business, but a lot of what he says makes sense. The problem is he’s not concerned with the ramifications of his actions. Rigid order causes a lot of suffering, but so does complete chaos.

Yeah this he was pretty profound for Me Too! He pulled The air out of her lungs and then made a vacuum bubble so she would suffocate. This isn't holding your breath this is the air removed from your lungs you would Run out of oxygen very fast the countdown would be pretty much what you have in your blood because he pulled all of it out of your lungs. This makes air benders one of the most powerful peoples if not the most powerful peoples. This scene is only 2nd to the small scene when haku froze the 5 fire benders solid solid you're made of water why not just freeze them solid to the bone and he seemed to be able to do that faster than the suffocation so that makes it a little bit more lethal.

Bryke really tried to censor themselves there like they didn't just kill the queen. They had a murder-suicide in the first season, they kill the earth queen in this season, like, c'mon bro, just give us the entire length and have the voice actor say "death".
