  • @GodSpeed161
    @GodSpeed161 2 ปีที่แล้ว +32

    Hey C.W, really hope you read this. I'll start this off by clarifying that I'm I'm 18 year old studying AI, not a Pilot or an Aerospace engineer, I'm just a fan of planes so my opinion is probably not as valid as yours but here goes:
    Everything about this plane points to a project aimed at export, particularly 3rd world and less wealthy countries looking to upgrade their fleet to gen 4.5/5 planes (many west African countries still operate the Mig 21, some Middle Eastern countries also use the Mig 29 ATM if I'm not mistaken). This would explain why the aircraft is unveiled in English, typically all Russian military products are unveiled in Russian (Su-57, Hypersonic missiles, S500 etc) when meant for primarily domestic use, however English would obviously be the language of choice when pitching a product to foreign countries.
    The idea of this product being for export to less developed nations still making use of older fleets would also explain why the AI system and supersonic cruise features were pitched. Yes these are Standard for gen 4 fighters, however most of these nations would be operating gen 3 fighters meaning this would be a huge upgrade.
    Finally, the design choices (the striking resemblance to the f 35 and x 32) are probably no accident. Obviously manufacturers will set their margins to incorporate the cost of R&D, by taking light 'inspiration' 🤣 from prior aircraft they probably saved themselves a heap load of hours in the windtunnel (I've done Wind Tunnel work and the amount of time and resources it takes is obscene, even for an amateur project) and modelling which could significantly bring the price of the project down considering the scale and effort needed to make a functional fighter jet.
    Finally while low unit and operational costs are important for any aircraft, easy take offs and requiring less ground crew is especially important for 3rd World countries who might not only not have the funds to handle the operational costs, but also lack trained mechanics ready to maintain aircraft operational and mission ready. I know this first hand as a family friend is a general for the Malinese army who currently can't keep their entire fleet of just 8 Mig 21s (yes, 8 units of a 3rd gen fighter) operational as they simply can't find enough skilled mechanics to service the entire fleet.
    No the features of this plane are not that impressive but I think it is important to consider who these will be sold to, as I said I'm not a massive plane expert but I'm guessing these will go for half or 2/3 the price of an f35 which will make them a good option for Eastern European and somewhat wealthier third world countries to arm themselves long term.
    I'm at 11:38 in this video so maybe you point all of this out just wanted to put the idea out there just in case. As always keep up the great content and sorry for writing an essay in the comments lol

    • @2Pechnika52
      @2Pechnika52 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello. I am writing to you after 2 years. I'm from the Russian Federation. These aircraft were not planned to be used in the defense of the state. They really wanted to sell them. The design cant do so they added the trust vectoring which (and I could be wrong) wouldnt do a great job but better then nothing. However, I never figured out why RU uses 360 degree (or 3D) trust vectoring - there is no point and no pilot would like sideways Gs, better off banking and pulling up or do to do the same task with greater performance (since you would be using your flight surfaces). Its why the F22 180 degree "2.5D" trust vectoring was used as it is the better way & more comfortable to pull Gs & better performance. In practice I've only seen RU jets with TV use it in a 2.5D so they likely know its pointless to do 3D TV. Mover likely knows this topic better & if there is a real reason they have it 3D. No idea why RU releases these half baked plans or real planes and tries to claim theyre on the same level as US planes when they arnt close. They cant even afford to build they crappy (compared to the F22) 57s - no point having these if they dont have control of the air space. A good stealth bomber would be a better option since they wont have air supremacy fighters (the su57) if they want to bomb in our airspace. However, I think while RU pretends to be at the same military level as the US they know they have no chance against us and likely they know they stuff is meant more non-NATO countries as they have no chance against the US let alone NATO as a whole. My guess is there biggest threat is china who they might have a chance against and are actively avoiding them by pretending to be a friend to china.

    Looks like Boeing gave up the goods on their XF-32 prototype from the JSF program competition. Things to note:
    -Russia is usually a designer of twin engined fighters, this is the first one in a long while with a single motor.
    -V-Stabs are a lot like the Su-57 Felon's, which are not very tall and I still feel is a possible hinderance to high AoA stability, and possibly a hindrance at extremely high speeds. Am unsure however because they are "all moving" surfaces, so they're move more surface than a simple ridder.
    -It uses MATRESKA, an AI (it's algorithmic in nature, not true AI, come on now...) based logistics and system hard ware monitor platform. The F-35 has this. It originally had ALIS, it now has a far better variant known as ODIN.
    -Mover mentioned the underslung intake and possible FOD concerns; respectfully Mover, the Russians have that shit figured out and have had so since the first Su-27. The Mig-29 itself has two sets of intakes, one for flight and one for ground. The ground intakes are located on the top side of the LERX. Sukhois employ metal grates that are lowered during taxi and take off/landing. The Russians know better. Their mind set is that in a battlefield, it would hardly be any cleaner.
    -Aerodynamic Chines are not a direct mimic of US based developments; they're not used for just stealth; their primarily used as lift generators. I'm surprised to not find the aircraft's chines following more closely to the F-35s design. In fact, the nose becomes smooth, which signals fabrication limits with their composites.
    -Lack of Canards and Elevons leads me to assume this will actually be less maneuverable than the F-35A. Shocking, as the Russians tend to favor those kinematics over US favored strengths. (after completing the video, noticed only an 8g limit. HMMMM, wow. Massive let down)
    -Wing profile and chord is surprisingly thin. This aircraft might be faster than the F-35 over all. It looks built for speed, actually. The Intake is ugly, but unlike the nasty ass Guppy from Boeing (the X-32), the intake is much further away from the shock producing nose cone; so at super sonic speeds, this thing will work fine approaching Mach 2 just like the F-16 does.
    -Wing profile does show that despite the large delta size, it doesn't have a very thick aero foil at the root, nor does it have a high incidence near the root. The F-35s wings are stubby but the reason it's able to carry as much JP-5 as the mass of an entire F-16 is because of those types of features, vortex generators and lifting body method. This aircraft doesn't seem to use too much of that.
    - Mover is perplexed with the AI, but I can tell you that the AI feature that the presentation brags about is likely the competitor with the F-35s own AI. The F-35 actually has an onboard flight and mission AI, so the Aircraft can actually fly itself, even in combat roles. The F-35 is designed to have a Pilot quarter back a flight of 12 F-35s that are flown in a "drone" mode. The AI development has actually gotten that good over the years and it's no surprise that 15 years later, Russia develops their own.
    -They mention vector thrust... I laughed.
    -The ejector nozzle is CLEARLY mimicking the F-35s F135 nozzle, not sure how vector thrust is supposed to be integrated into that. The interior pedals of the nozzle are bronze instead of a snowy white, suggesting either a mockup or that Russia cannot produce the nano-scale ceramic coatings like we can in the US.
    -The nozzle is oddly discolored and splotchy. Real nozzles like that of the F-35s are completely solid and a dark titanium grey... because they're infact made of titanium which is known for it's deep, dark silver colors that uniform.
    - It states that the internal fuel load is 7400 kg. That's roughly 16,400 lbs. The F-35 holds 20,000 lbs internally, which is slightly heavier than the empty weight of an entire F-16...
    - It also states that the top speed is an expected 1.8 mach, confirming that I think it does fine on speed. It's limiting factor is probably the motor itself along with a more restrictive drag coefficient compared to previous designs.
    - The Chines on the cheeks stop at the radome; letting the nose cone becoming smooth and cylindrical... odd
    - The aircraft surprisingly has static discharge wicks on both the wings and the V-stabs. The F-35 doesn't.
    - The aircraft can only hold 5 standard A2A missiles internally. The F-35 can hold 6 and with the new missile design afoot, it could actually hold more.
    - The Checkmate literally has to sacrifice a missile slot or two internally to install an onboard cannon, big fail. That means sighting that cannon is going to be a bitch. I'm reminded of the issues that both the F-4 and F-16 had when dealing with underslung gun pods. Both applications were subpar compared to a purpose built standard gun built into the airframe.
    -The model shown has no visible signs of anything remotely challenging the EOTS, even though their "Optical Electrical Intelligence" system is clearly a market jab at "look we have an EOTS too!". All I see is the typical Sukhoi IRST pod on the forward canopy. The F-35s EOTS is MASSIVE and it's capabilities are RIDICULIOUS. It can actually see you through a window and pick out your rank, from 50 miles out. This was tested when a flight tried this by targeting a volunteer in a Vegas Hotel from 50 miles out.
    - Checkmate also shows known visible signs of a DAS, although multispectrum sensor suites are not always readily visible. The F-35 and F-22 both have sensors and antennas hidden everywhere, on leading edges, wing tips, chines, ect. However there's no sign of any optical pods besides the IRST on the cockpit.
    With that said, I predict this aircraft will be faster than the F-35, probably fly a bit farther as well (depending on Russian engine tech) and it will handle much like any other delta would; great instantaneous turn rates for snapping the nose around but it will bleed energy like no tomorrow and be utterly incapable of keeping up with Sustained Turn Rates. This plane is not going to see 30 degrees a second Sustained. So this isn't really a good aircraft for ACM unless they succeed and give this aircraft a good 45,000 lbs of thrust motor to compensate for that energy bleed. There's no canards so I don't believe it's high AoA ability will be that impressive, even with the wide V-Tail configuration being considered.
    Major take aways are that this aircraft here is clearly a model or a half static test, half mockup hybrid. I've seen high res closed ups of the aircraft at this MAKS airshow and the rivets are visible, the skin has very chaotic surface profiles, panels fail to mate flawlessly like they do an the F-22 and F-35 and beyond that, the Rivet Patterns themselves are simply NOT CONDUCIVE of ACTUAL engineering (seriously, the rivet bolt patterns have no rigard for the chevron shaping of the panels and that's a major no no). The Rivets may actually be an artistic addon, who knows. The Su-57 has exposed rivets as well. The F-35 and 22 use rivets too, but they're well under the coating and the tolerances that we adhere too when putting in bolts and rivets are EXTREMELY TIGHT, leading to very smooth surfaces.
    Beyond that, I also predict that Russia simply cannot compete in the Composites field. The USA has been using composites in it's combat aircraft for 45 years; the F-16 isn't just aluminum and titanium. The F-35 is a carbon fiber monster, making it actually have a low mass despite it bulky nature. How you make those composites and what you put into those layers plays a HUGE ROLE in the strength of the composite structure AS WELL AS the Stealth Properties. The lack of a Chine all the way up the Radome and the evidence of Static Discharge Wicks on the wings and V-stabs on the Su-75 indicate to me that the Russians have neither the tolerances, or the correct recipes on how to make good stealth capable composite structures. Even the chines on the Su-75 are notably more blunt and rounded that the F-35s, compare them for yourself via google.
    As a result, the stealth properties of this airplane are in serious question. Much like the Su-57, I doubt it's stealth will be near as good as the American counterparts, but we cannot possibly know for sure due to stealth being a material science. Stealth isn't just geometry, it's also what an article is made out of and painted with...
    I think for a unit projected price of 30 million USD equivalent, the fighter is probably adequately priced. It might be snatched up by adversaries like Iran or even NK, countries that know the Chinese would be too controlling over the product and thus something of a risk.
    What's sad here is that this airplane was seen years ago and actually may belong to Mikoyan. It looks to be a descendent of the MiG-41 project, interlaced with a bit of MiG-37 (concept wise). The largest take away is that we need to really look at Boeing and ask them WTF did they do because the Su-57 has slight hints of the Boeing X-32, but this Su-75? Yeah... it's a Russian X-32 for sure.
    Seriously. From the Intake style, the delta, V-Tail and even the Cockpit Canopy.
    We really need to be asking Boeing some questions lol

    A front hinged canopy wouldn't be "copied from the F-35"; early MiG-21s had them, so if anything Lockheed Martin copied Mikoyan Gurevich. These arguments are just childish. Sukhoi are past masters at building rough field capability into their jets - the early Flankers had screens and auxiliary inlets for just this reason, and many Soviet era jets had mudguards on the nose gear. TVC has been standard on Russian fighters for many years, which is something that was long since abandoned by the West as a really bad idea. The fuselage chines will act as LERX. "Most jets" certainly cannot super cruise, and I very much doubt the Checkmate will be able to any more than the F-35. As for your canopy comments, they're absurd: have you never seen a Flanker or a Felon? In any case, in the era of DAS it's a moot point. The gun is slated to fit in the weapon bay, much like the F-111's did. The truth is that Checkmate (if it ever sees the light of day since this was a mock up) certainly will not meet the Russian's claims. $20-30 million (as claimed) is complete fantasy. It may well sell on the export market as a Fulcrum replacement, though, and we can expect to see it in UAEAF service, given that they've been paying for its development.

    How do you avoid planes being nothing then practice to more expensive planes (such as F-35/22) while still being cheap?
    Low observability and speed.
    Reducing RCS into low "range" is inexpensive and provides satisfactory reduce in detection ranges, modern engine + long sleek design enables supercruising and high top speed.

    I used to be a sukhoi fanboy, until I realized there’s legitimate questions if they can even produce a plane. The SU-47/SU-37 were supposed to be raptor killers, they were scrapped. The SU-57 has 1 operational jet, despite being behind 20+ years in 5th gen tech (raptor developed in the 80’s). Checkmate still hasn’t flown and a majority of the air force are repurposed SU-27’s that the US would have in a museum at this point. Intake: There was a divertless intake tested on the F-16 that looked similar.
    Looking at the design, in mid-to high alpha there appears to be nothing for lateral stability except the thrust vector option with that empty belly. Seems like the wings would mask the effectiveness of the elevons. F-16s have ventral fins, F-15,-18,35 all have elevons that drop below the wings in high AOA. High-AOA with wing stations (assuming it has any) would seem to require a minimum thrust from the engine to remain stable ... low-speed landing might suffer a bit.

The United States armed forces is superior not necessarily because of its technology, but predominantly because of a national, professional, and organizational culture which fosters relatively low authority gradients, and strong adaptability. This stems from the diverse nature of her population. East European and Asian nations struggle with this important variable, because of their homogeneity and rigid authority structures. This is why CRM works so well here in the States, yet has had mixed reviews in those countries. Put simply, in a battle field, American operational protocols allow for autonomous and collaborative decision making processes, even in the absence of leadership. You cut the dragon's head, another one grows. Also, and contrary to how the whole world perceives us, Americans are not arrogant, and are trained to put their egos aside when it comes to operational decisions.
    Full disclosure: I am not a US born citizen and am originally from Iran. I was naturalized here. So I understand a thing or two about cultural variances.

      Ah, the old Cold War trope is out the box - Ivan is a drone pilot lead on to his target by ground control to launch the missile and be shot down...
      Russia has no issue with organizational culture - maybe not quite the Skunk Works but definitely no rigid hierarchy where superior's authority is law of the land. For example Stepan Sukhoi had an open door policy where ANY engineer could step in to share his ideas. Or practice of having junior members to speak first during team meetings (to avoid self censorship due to superior's opinion pressing down on them). They HAD to be creative and flexible to deliver on harsh requirements of USSR time military and even harsher competition - MiG vs Sukhoi vs Yakovlev, Ilyushin vs Tupolev and so on. Most stellar example is USSR Space Shuttle Buran that rest of Soviet Aircraft industry flat out refused to design/build - they stood up a brand new design bureau NPO Molniya for the task.
      There is a proven track record and kernel of it was inherited by modern Russia. UAC's biggest problem is (mostly corrupt) top/mid management that has very little or ANY qualification to be in aircraft design industry. It's loyalty over professionalism there. Read up on tragic history of NK-93 engine to get a premier example. Under those conditions it's quite surprising they can even produce new designs at all...
      Above all - Russia lacks funding on the level of US defense spending. Some things you just need to throw money (and time) at until you get it right. F35 is actually a good example - myriad or problems and missed deadlines, but program was designed to be unkillable so they just pressed on and resolved most of the issues.

      @@OK-1K1 I don't know. Perhaps it is shifting in some organizations. I suppose in a continuum, with our operating paradigm on one end of the spectrum, and the old USSR on the other, today's Russia is somewhere in the middle maybe? The point is, they have a long way to go, and national culture has a huge impact on the way things get done. We are adaptive, and enjoy the benefit of years of operational experience. Think about our systems. Many of our planes, including fighters, can be fitted with litening targeting pods able to target mobile and fluid targets. The Russians still rely on high workload TV technology (often requiring the use of a second crew member, i.e SU-34s etc.). They are great at scripted flight plans and pre-designated targets. But how much close air support experience do they have? We have over 20. Anecdotally, I have personally met and flown with Russian pilots. Granted they were retired and in the civilian world when I met them (I was at Emirates for a few years before coming back Stateside), but they did often lament in how dependent their systems were. I will also say that our diversity makes our armed forces that much more effective. Think about it.

    C.W. Lemoine are you somewhat biased or am I just imagining/misunderstanding it? Your statement:" It looks so familiar, I don't know why". Isn't it true when you consider the combination and integration of avionics, aerodynamics and stealth in one jet that they are very limited ways of designing an aircraft. That contributes to the similar look to the F35 in my opinion. What do you think?

    • @CWLemoine
      @CWLemoine  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course I'm biased. I am an American fighter pilot. But given the espionage programs of the Chinese and the Russians, and the amount of data stolen from the F-35 program, it's a bit more than a coincidence.
