For whatever reason, I have never been excited about Pirates as a creature type. Seemed too removed from the fantasy world I loved overall in Magic. However, the identity and support they're getting in this set means I will absolutely be building a pirate deck. I like the sort of "steal and sac" identity they truly have, with sort of a secondary support for attacking and treasure generation. Becoming a very coherent tribal identity to me, even though I am late to the party.
Not only is the beard gone, but the good (in the introductory "good morning magic, I'm Gavin Verhey ...") does not sound boring anymore. Gavin, you're really taking this show to the next level
Little disappointed with tribal taking up some of my favorite pairings, but I guess I used to like tribes when I was new, so it is more about bringing in new people.
Gavin, overall I’m loving the set and the previews. Looks like a blast to play! That said, the problem with white continues. Not much here compared to the other colors. The black and blue 3 mana flash creatures even remove and devalue some of whites better spells by being just better than the existing ones in white. Devaluing aven mindcensor and smothering tithe respectively.
Gavin, I read your Twitter thread on the subject, much appreciated! I really like the discussion and messaging you share with the community, thank you. :) I’m not really a Twitter guy, figured I’d message you here. Yes, the 4 white cards you highlight will see some play in white decks. But a few problems I see with them. First - catch up ramp that starts at 4 mana and doesn’t give an advantage, but somewhat counteracts a disadvantage isn’t as great as you seem to think. It’s also unreliable. And costs four mana. And maybe getting a couple or a few 1/1 tokens doesn’t add much to most commander games I’ve been in. Yes, it’s good and has a good upside potential, but it’d downside is a 3/4 for 4 with almost no text. It’s not a draw to a color. Would I play it if I was already in white? Maybe, if I needed some extra value and didn’t have anything else on deck theme. The exile / return enchantment I love - feels white, good build around potential, and minimal downside (downside is that it does exactly nothing, so a floor of nothing and a potential high upside might make some decks. Monarch enablers in white is great! It is yet another 4 mana card with zero board impact until a whole turn cycle goes by, and then you probably only get a 1/1 token. Bleh. Un exciting for most decks other than having the monarchy tacked on. Sky hunter looks great ... in an equipment deck. Which is good, but it would be nice for white to branch out a bit. Also, another 4 mana card. How about something similar but for two or three mana (with smaller impact perhaps?). More diversity in effects, things that are consistently strong and not low floor with situational high upside and more diversity in strong cards at multiple different mana costs. White doesn’t just need tools and role players, it needs reasons to play it as a color that other colors don’t just do better.
Hey Gavin! I'd like to ask you how can we know which reprints are going to be only in the precons and in the collector's boosters (like "Kodama's Reach" or "Generous Gift"). Will there be a list of some sort that explains which reprints will be found in the main set (regular boosters) and which won't? Thank you so much!
The full decklists will be out tomorrow - but an easy way to look is at the collector number. If it's ### / ### then it's in the main set. If it's just ###, then it's a Commander deck card.
I'm curious how did those archetypes felt, when you're testing in-house, with multiplayer and it being commander. They looked pretty similar to what you'd find in a normal set to me.
When I assumed color identity requirements would be suspended here, I liked the idea of the Ravnica Bouncelands @ (C) to really help people play their 3 color decks. When I learned of color identity enforcement, I kind of hoped for new 1C tapping bouncelands, again to help fix. Guildless Commons is a fine card, and better than nothing. But it doesn't actually help with the problems of the set, does it?
@@williamsimkulet7832 Other than the 3+ color commanders, there is little in the set that needs heavy fixing. Added with the other commons and uncommons that help you fix your colors, and the removal of the singleton rule, most decks will be good. If you try to draft a 3+ color deck, the support is there, but you will struggle a bit. That's generally how it goes in draft. If you go 3 colors, the 3rd color should be a splash rather than equal in all 3.
@@k9commander Fixing is always desirable, but moreso in a format where you begin with 2-3 color commanders in your "opening hand". Besides, Bouncelands are just GREAT cards. In addition to fixing, they also help you to make your land drops (they're effectively 2 lands in one clunky card), and they made Ravnica one of the most enjoyable blocks I've ever drafted. Bouncelands @ (C) have yielded great formats. Bouncelands @ (U) less so. I "get" that someone at WOTC doesn't like this design @ (C), but if any set deserves it, it's the mutliplayer set where players want to do BIG THINGS. This is a big, and sad, missed opportunity. And given Bouncelands rarely see constructed play outside of commander (There's a modern combo deck I think...), these are all upside, no downside choices to reprint.
@@williamsimkulet7832 th-cam.com/video/ZwDfp1kZgvk/w-d-xo.html 3 color limited deck. Fixing looks good. The issue with bounce lands (and guild signets) is that they're only good in their specific colors. Say you draft the simic land and WUG cards. Then when building the deck, you decide to cut either blue or green. that land now becomes useless. This is likely why they went with mono and all color fixing rather than guild color fixing. The rare dual lands are here to complete a cycle.
The bounce lands are already slow, but they can color fix you. The fact that this doesn't produce colored mana should of been justification for it to come in untapped.
If it came into play untapped it’s almost/basically as good as ancient tomb then. Only downside is bouncing a land but being able to use two colourless immediately from one land is pretty op.
@@Eastside97 OP in a format where gaea's cradle, serra's sanctum, cabal coffers are legal. One extra mana isn't over powered. That is like saying temple of the false god is over powered. I think that it would make it viable. in its current state "comes into play tapped" makes it unplayable in anything that isn't battlecruiser.
I have always thought that archetypes must be one of the most interesting parts of design, especially balancing limited and constructed gameplay. But I am curious how the archetypes were decided on for this set, as the archetypes here feel a good deal more diverse (which has potential complexity issues) and all lean towards grindier gameplay. How much of this was intentional, trying to simulate the feel of a typical commander group, and what were the other goal when balancing this format? I know a big struggle designing this format was keeping the games moving, so how was that balanced with also wanting to be able to create 'engines' (things like sac loops or a stacking a lot of counters or enchantments on creatures), which inherently tend to gain the most advantage in a stalled boardstate? (Sorry for the long comment, this stuff is just very interesting to me.)
I imagine that was probably one of the things that pushed them to bring back the monarch mechanic, as it encourages attacking and tends to speed up the game a bit

Great video! It was a little hard to follow the words you were saying over the music at the times you went quiet. Just letting you know for the future :)

Or we can always hope for an extremely overpriced secret lair.
