- MARIKINA CITY SURPRISED ME WITH ITS CLEAN AND ORGANIZED STREETS! I ALSO LOVED THE COMMUNITY VIBES!
I accompanied my wife for some work errands to this city along a river in Metro Manila. I expected to find shoes… which I did in abundance! We stopped by Konzept, and chatted with the owner of this fashionable store. We checked out Otto, and its massive historic almost mall like shop… which even had a funky shoe art museum! I loved the plaza nearby, the ancestral style building was beautiful… I think it is a cafe? Unsure, because we ended up eating at a place called “Sundays”. Great coffee, a big menu of Filipino and North American dishes. We enjoyed the ribs, chicken burger and buffalo shrimp salad! Oh, and just outside the cafe, a beautiful church.
At one point I found myself walking through the public market. It is a very cool concept… the stands are seemingly houses? And there is a road big enough for trucks that runs through it. Oh yes, more shoes and sandals can be found too! This was just a random day, but something really stood out to me! I was surprised how clean all the streets were! For a busy city in the NCR it was so refreshing seeing little garbage, lots of street sweepers, people using crosswalks, and organized vibes. Is Marikina absolutely spotless? Of course not. But it certainly looks like the locals and lgu take care of their streets here. Even all the tricycle drivers were parked organized with their work shirts… and sharing good vibes of course!
Oh, and I got an awesome spontaneous haircut from a local family. Great experience, and he did a great job!
This errand day in Marikina was surprisingly awesome! I want to come back, walk around and explore!

Very cool shoe art exhibit at OTTO. I just saw another vlog that explained that during the pandemic, since no one could go to work at the shoe manufacturers, they were getting rid of the shoe forms, many of which were historic (from when the businesses began), and were even burning them. The woman in the vlog felt like this was such a shame and she found a way to repurpose them to greater benefit. Instead, they were turned into art works and sold in order to provide for the needs of people in the community, who couldn't work and provide for themselves during the pandemic. Just another beautiful example of the creativity of Filipinos and of bayanihan and kapwa.❤❤❤

I roared with laughter when I saw Therine packing the emergency kit and reciting its contents, stating the emergency that each item was for.🤣🤣🤣 It makes me wonder how we men ever survive without women in our life.❤💯

My son and his wife lived there for 10 years before coming home to Cebu before the pandemic. I’m glad you featured it because it’s definitely a city other LGUs should emulate, The LGU there even has someone picking up used cooking oil from households every week and they somehow re-use it to run, I think, their waste management machines.

You should explore the other side too, Marikina Heights, you'll see a really cool park near West Drive. You'll love General Ordonez Street too! Explore all the restaurants too! You and the wife will love it there!

I honestly didn't know Otto was local. I had some Otto shoes growing up for school.
Marikina is quite huge. There are so many barangays. Each Barangay is unique. There's also lots of hills there which were developed and turned to residential, industrial, posh villages etcetera. The ones you got into was a small old barangay with small houses situated near the river banks. All in all living condition in Marikina is very very peaceful and orderly. The former Mayor BF instilled discipline into the majority of Marikenyos.

Yes. Marikina is the Second cleanliest City in the Nation. Our water System is maintained every now and then to make sure our water is clean. Our drainage and our roads are also well maintained before the storm will hit us. Also our river is clean too that make us inspiration and pattern to neighboring city. We pay taxes and we have trust in our own government. We have lots to be proud of as marikeños.

Hey, I've been a long-time subscriber from the beautiful city of Marikina. We're proud Marikenians, and our city is known for being very clean. It was all thanks to our beloved ex-Mayor Bayani Fernando, who tragically passed away while fixing his roof. We always go to that restaurant on Sundays. When you come back to Marikina, I'd love to meet up with you and Therine. Actually, the barbers who gave you a haircut are my cousins, and we live just a few blocks away from them.
Marikina used to be a shoe factory town, but now there are a lot of great restaurants popping up and thriving. If you ever come here, you should try some of our famous foods like Macy's goto, the everlasting, and waknatoy.

Hello Therine and Kyle, yes Marikina is one of the cleanest city of Metro Manila and very strict .
It's so crowded everywhere in the city.
Marikina Heights have been my childhood home. We moved out in December 2015 and since then I've been depressed. I wish I could return and buy a decent house there one day with my parents because I've always wanted to retire there because it's so peaceful, the sidewalks are wide, streets are clean, lots of trees and now there are various cafés and restaurants. Marikina will always be a commuter town/bedroom community. The perennial floods though are the only problem. Although in our area in Marikina Heights, we never experienced flooding in our more than 20 years of living there.

Its so sad that marikina gets flooded whenever a typhoon or strong rains hit the city. Very diciplined city, very clean and organized. Still a lot of great food places to discover there Kyle. An ideal city that should be copied by Manila.

During Bayani Fernando's tenure, Marikina underwent a remarkable transformation that I had the privilege of witnessing firsthand. Having lived in the city both before and after his leadership, I can attest to the significant improvements he brought about. The current administration, while focused on maintaining these developments, has not quite reached the same level of excellence and innovation that characterized Fernando's era. It's clear to me that while the city continues to function, the dynamic and visionary changes that once set Marikina apart have not been fully realized under the current leadership.
