Régine Chassagne, the frontwoman, was born in Montréal of Haitian parents who fled Haiti during the Duvalier regime. A number of Régine's family were murdered during the Jérémie Vespers massacre there in 1964. In 2010 she founded KANPE, a Montréal-based foundation dedicated to helping the poorest Haitians become self-sufficient("kanpe" means "to stand up" in Creole.) I've been fortunate to work for Régine with KANPE for almost 8 years now- an incredible woman of vision, passion, and focus. AND btw Arcade Fire as a band has raised MILLIONS of dollars for Haiti- specifically through KANPE and for Partners In Health.
you should hear the last song on this album. its the same song but a shorter more intimate mysterious version. its a closing to the album how it begins is, how it ends.
“TUNNELS” is the song you MUST hear from ARCADE FIRE. It’s a brilliant track that hits you in the heart from their debut album. THANK YOU again for your beautiful and heartfelt reactions. You listen to music in a way that respects the music. VERY much appreciated. Cheers!
Brilliant reaction guys. Thank you so much. I love how the song begins in a very uplifting way but as the music develops and you take in the lyrics, it turns into something very different. By the end of the song, I’m always left feeling very nostalgic and a little sad. I’m glad you both enjoyed it. ❤
Those same lines always fill me with emotion too. Great reaction! Wake Up is another amazing song, but they have so many. I recommend watching a live performance.
Howdy, folks: French Canadians pronounce it, 'Kaybec', English Canadians I believe for the most part pronounce it, 'Kwebec'. The lyrics are good and nostalgic but I'm not crazy about the sound of the song. Several years back, they were touted as a super great upcoming band and I do believe they have some good stuff and also won some awards. Good reaction by you guys.
Other ones to check out - Neighbourhood #1 - Tunnels, Neighbourhood #4 - Power Out, Wake Up, Rebellion (Lies), Keep the Car Running, Ocean of Noise (Calexico Version), The Well and the Lighthouse, No Cars Go, Sprawl II (Mountains beyond Mountains), Reflektor, Here Comes the Night Time, It's Never Over (Oh Orpheus), Everything Now, Put Your Money on Me, The Lightning I/II and Unconditional I. They also did a great Peter Gabriel Games Without Frontiers cover.
Can confirm what others are saying that French and most bilingual Canadians will pronounce it Kay-bek. It's spelled Québec in French, and that little accent on the 'e' gives it a long 'a' sound as in 'day', except the syllable is short and quick. The 'u' in 'Qu' is also silent in French, and not pronounced like a 'w'. English speakers are more likely to treat the 'Qu' like 'Qw' like in the work 'quick', and often pronounce it Kwe-bek.
You guys should check out their live performance at the reading festival, their studio version doesn't do them justice. There are 9 people or so in the band and they all play different instruments, they're just wonderful to watch!
Yea, i like this band, they're a little bit different, another Canadian band you should react to is Bare naked ladies, and their song 'what a good boy' it's terrific! it has a great groove and thought provoking lyrics, please, give it a spin, you'll love it!! Greetings from Dublin 👍

This song always makes me see a late summer sunset, with kind of an ominous loneliness right after in the twilight
Excellent band. I've seen them live here in Canada 🇨🇦 Great concert. ❤

I’d adore if you reacted to this full album. It won grammy album of the year in 2011!
That last verse always gets me too.

Great band, this is my favorite album from them.

Fantastic song, oh the memories it brings. I miss being young too. It gives me 70s vibes 😊
I love this band and the whole album. Thanks for reacting.

Yeah, these Arcade Fire songs kind of sneak up on you and next thing you know it's hitting you right in the feels.
I’m originally from Wisconsin right below Canada we always pronounced it Qwa-beck 😅
You’ll like their Rebellion (lies) song too!
Hey guys. Rebellion Lies is their best song in my opinion. My favourite s ong at this moment

Try Kbec. We do not pronounce qwebec but kbec
👍👍
No Cars Go and Wake up are also two very good Arcade Fire songs, but it is better to listen to them live on TH-cam videos, they have much more power.
Please Arcade Fire - Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)
Wait, this isn't The Kinks? :)
