My first gun was a Ruger SR9, I not only sold that one and miss it terribly but even worse I didn't learn my lesson and I traded the second one I bought in a bundle with my favorite shotgun for an AR that I never even got to see
My first firearm was 1993, Ruger SP101 DAO .357magnum . I used .357magnum at first but mostly used .38spl +P in the 3+ years I owned it. I chose the DA only snub over a Ruger P93DAO 9mm pistol. P93 series 9mm guns did not last like the robust SP101 series.
@@Squatch-sj3vg That was my first handgun as well...and I've been tempted to sell it on occasion...but never have (and sometimes, I came *real* close to selling it). Now, I'm so glad I didn't.
I'm thinking of selling two Kimber 1911's for 1st a Dan Wesson Classic Carry and 2nd a Standard Manufacturing Nickel finish Government size. Will I regret? BTW...love your revolver!
I would love the exact same gun as you have, but with a 3 inch barrel. It takes care of the ejection issue, has (slightly) improved ballistics and sight radius, and carries just as easily.
The first gun I ever bought was a 4" 686 when I was 18. Loved it and shot it frequently, even full house loads. Young and dumb, I sold it to my best friend at the time. Now I wish I had it back. I bought mine for $300. A lot better than today's prices.
I had a 3" S&W CS1 for several years, until I gave it to my son in law for Christmas 2005. For those who don't know the CS1 was a non catalog version of the 686, it was a special order for the US Customs Service. It came with a round butt and either a 3 or 4 inch barrel. I'm going to have to keep my eye out for a 3" 686+. The ejector rod on 3" Smiths is just enough longer than on a 2.5" gun that it insures ejection. I also gave my 2 oldest granddaughters matching 3" Model 10-5s and the youngest princess a 3" Pro Series model 60. Now the only Smith carry revolvers I have are a 4" Model 65, a factory nikeled 2" Model 10 and my EDC a 442. I have a couple of other 2" J frames in 32 and an Airweight 38 but they are collectable range toys.
Why did I not know about this gun until now? I have a 3" in the Plus and a -1 6" and I LOVE both of them. I think my 6" is still the most accurate handgun I've ever shot. Now that I have seen this gun, I want to see it in my regular carry rotation. Thanks a bunch, Steve---you just cost me money!
I have a newer 7 shot 4" 686 which I love shooting more than any of my other guns. One thing I dislike about my revolver is the key lock safety but it has never given me any problems. Hoping .357 ammunition becomes more available shortly, very difficult to find at the moment.
it's December of 2022, just after Christmas. My birthday was on the 22nd. I turned 45 this year and wanted to get myself something special. I picked up the same 2.5" snubnose but it's a 686-6. It will be my first revolver.
Thanks for sharing the contents of the 'Vault' with us. I enjoy all the videos. The only downside, if it is a downside, is it gives me another gun to add to my would like own list.
Very nice Steve, that's a treasure for sure. I have a 586 and 686, both 6" versions. My carry is a Taurus 617T, slightly smaller and significantly lighter, but still a 7 rd. I am old enough to be comfortable with calling a 7 round revolver high capacity.
I've had two 3" 66's. There's no functional difference in concealability between the 2.5" and 3" tubes but the 3" gives you a full length ejector rod and just that bit more sight radius. Aesthetically I think the 3" just looks more balanced as well. Aaaaand now I'm missing that gun again.
I agree with you on the moon clips. My first load in the gun is mooned. I’ve found the clips get bent very easily so my reload is going to be in a speed loader. A bent moon clip, even slightly can give you all kinds of problems. Great video, great gun sir.
I bought my first revolver 4 months ago - a 686+ with a 4inch barrel. Very high quality and even .357Mag doesn't feel harsh at all with that hefty mass of revolver.
My first S&W was a Model 19 I bought in the mid 70’s. Best pistol I’ve ever owned. Unfortunately I sold it. I now have a 686 Plus (2.5 inch barrel) and love it. Not as accurate as the 19 which had a 4” Barrel. I carry the 686 in a shoulder holster, excellent EDC. I owns number of S&W pistols and think they produce a quality product at a reasonable price. Love the Brownells videos.
The 686 is a fantastic revolver. I started out with revolvers and had several S&W and Ruger .357's. I went into striker fired 9mm and no longer have any revolvers. I switched to a 1911 as an everyday carry gun in .45 but lately, I have missed my 686 and thinking of getting another one. I'll still carry my Kimber Pro Raptor II in .45, but get another 686 to enjoy as a fun range gun. Thank you for this video reminder of a great gun.
I love this 686 (my cousin has precisely the same firearm, and I have shot it a LOT). But, some years ago I opted for a 2.25 inch barrel SP101, instead of the 2.5 inch 686. Why? Because a .25 inch shorter barrel won’t have a substantial effect on muzzle velocity, because five rounds is quite likely enough for the vast majority of defensive encounters, because it is easier to carry and conceal in the warmer months, because adjustable sights really aren’t necessary in snubbie-range defensive situations, and a because the Ruger design is more durable and reliable.
Surprisingly the model 66 with 2.75 inch is just 1 ounce lighter. But with this 686 you have one round more! With the ball detent like in the new 66 S&W could lengthen the rod on the 2.5 inch 686.
Mine is a three inch which I love. Yours is looking mighty fine also. Mine is in the rotation and as you know it's the holster (Milt Sparks IWB) that takes away that weight. If I could do one thing to improve mine it would be the moon clips. I find the speed loaders (in the summer) are harder to carry and conceal than the revolver itself. Thanks for the look at that beautiful hand gun.
I absolutely love the 86s. I might even like the 586 better. It's just hard to beat a beautiful bluing job. I enjoy carrying a revolver if I'm dressed up or going someplace nice. When I know I'm going to be working or around a lot of dust and dirt, I stick with my M&P9s but there is just something special about a wheel gun.
I have a 2.5" 686-3 that I love to shoot, but never liked the short ejector rod. I also have a 3" K-frame with a full sized ejector that is one of my favorites. Years ago I went as far as acquiring a factory new 4" barrel and standard ejection rod for the 686, with the intent to have a gunsmith fit and cut it to 3", but switched to mostly auto's for carry. The 686 stays in the safe except for some range sessions these days.
I have the 686-6 Plus with the same barrel length. I was trained with a 2.5" Model 19 back in the day and really wanted a Model 66 in the same barrel length, but this was a few years ago and the K frames were no longer produced. This left me with just the 686-6 if I wanted a short barrel, duty size .357. Have to say I really love the gun. Saw no reason to get a snubbie K frame now that SW has reintroduced the model.
2024. I traded my 38 charter arms lte. For the 686 2 and a half inch barrel.. always wanted one. My neighbor wanted something with less recoil and easy to carry because he is 80 yrs old. 50 dollar gun for this 800 to 900 in the store. I promised never to sell it.. it's beautiful.
I own a 686+ with 2.5” barrel, and a 686 SSR 4” barrel. My favorite is the 686+. I carry the 686+ when hiking or mountain biking and save the semi auto pistols (Glock 19, Sig P232 and S&W Shield) for city carry.
I HAVE THE SAME EXACT 686 EXCEPT FOR BEING CUT FOR MOON CLIPS, I BOUGHT IT NEW BACK IN THE DAY & LOVE IT. I CLEAN IT METICULOUSLY EVERY TIME I FIRE IT & STILL LOOKS BRAND NEW NOT EVEN A SCRACTCH ON IT. I'VE HAD MANY PEOPLE TRY TO BUY IT & I TELL THEM EVERY THING IS FOR SALE AT THE RIGHT PRICE, BUT I DON'T THINK ANYONE WILL EVER OFFER ME THE RIGHT PRICE.
Nice👍, My Grandma has weak wrist ,has difficulty racking . She loves her S&W 38 ultra lite , She doesn't trust lawyers . She said having no external hammer made S&W 38 ultralite a win for her because of all this defunding police. She said her Anderson is too hard to conceal. 😁
Great revolver. My first gun purchase was also a 686 but with the 6 inch barrel. Mine also has the hammer nose. Great shooter. I recently bought a 627 stubby, which is a N frame. But even with that extra weight, .357s still have a good kick to it. Must be even more in the L frame. Rock solid revolvers though. Great guns.
I have a 686-2 with the same barrel length. I carried it for several years almost daily. The only difference is mine is a 6 shot as 7 shot were not yet offered.
I personally find the 2.5 inch 686 to be the most athletically appealing barrel length. I find the 3 inch barrel to also be nice looking, but theres something about the 2.5
I sold my early model 66 (aaarrrg) and then bought the 686 which I like very much, but I feel that the hammer spur is to narrow compared to the spur on my 629.
The thing I always hated about the L frame .357’s was that stubby hammer spur. A target spur hammer would have made it ideal for me. But they never offered one back in the day.
Nice gun. I don't like the target sights but not a deal breaker. Rubber grips oh yes... a must in my book. I have a small 3" that happens to be a Colt. It is my "small" edc gun as much of the time I carry a 1911. For some reason I have trouble shooting 357 rounds. Muzzle blast and recoil are issues for sure. I am fairly hardened to recoil as I shoot a fair amount. The 357 recoil moves the gun off target affecting speed and accuracy. At the moment my little revolver has 38 wadcutters as it slings them in the black with decent follow up shots. No speed loaders but I have some extra ammo in the back of my car. Wish I could carry all my gear as edc but in the end I count on surprise and being quick with the shots I have. Once upon a time I ran a 2.5 second table of bowling pins (4" Model 19). Not that quick anymore but still faster and more accurate than most. Often say if I knew ahead of time I would be in a gunfight I'd carry my 44 magnum so really everything is a compromise from there. Ammo for 38/357 has been an issue. Currently shooting rounds I bought 10 years ago and my stock is declining. Gun store has 357 for $1.50 per round!
I want the 5" version for bear country. .357 is about the most I can handle well enough to trust for accuracy for me and I never much liked auto loaders
My favorite gun I have 4 inch no dash and every one up to dash 5 ,I have 2,5 to 8 3/8 barrel I hunt with the 4 and 6 inch the most my wife carries the 2,5in I love 686 and 586 and model 19 and 29 -629
I have the 1.875" J-frame, .38 Special, of course. It's a nice gun, however I have found it much easier to shoot in single action mode vs double action, as the recoil seems much more manageable. I can certainly see where a heavier frame revolver, such as that "L"- frame, would be much more appealing, especially when shooting heavier loads. I bet that L-frame shoots like a dream with lighter loads! But, of course, as said, it would be a bit harder to conceal in certain dress attire. But a super great gun overall.👍
I own this 7 shot 686 2-1/2 inch revolver. I want to swap out the grip. However there is no mounting screw to remove and pull the original factory grip off. At least I can’t find it. Please look at your grip closely and tell me where to find it. Not on the side, not underneath, so where is it? I’m also under the impression this is a I frame. That was the first revolver I ever bought. I learned a very important lesson from it. Never sell a firearm. I miss that revolver.
My first gun was a walther p22 that I sold. It was just a 22 but I learned the same lesson. I miss it
My first gun was a Ruger SR9, I not only sold that one and miss it terribly but even worse I didn't learn my lesson and I traded the second one I bought in a bundle with my favorite shotgun for an AR that I never even got to see

I carried the 686 6" for 25 Years and Retired. I just got a 686 plus 2.5 for CC. I absolutely like it!
The S&W model 686 has long been one of my favorite DA revolvers.
I would love the exact same gun as you have, but with a 3 inch barrel. It takes care of the ejection issue, has (slightly) improved ballistics and sight radius, and carries just as easily.

Love any version of the 586 & 686. Great Revolvers.
I have the 686-6 in 2.5”, 3”, and 4”. They all get carried, but the 2.5” version gets carried 99% of the time.
Can you tell the difference in recoil? I'm thinking of getting the 686 3" barrel.
I don't own any revolvers but I've always wanted a 686. Love the look of the 686 plus with the 4.125 inch barrel.
The 686 competitor looks good too.
I've had one since the 1980s.
Custom Ace grips...it's absolutely perfect
I have the 6 inch bought in mid 80s I kept my paper work and box. My favorite by far.

I have a 686 no dash and a newer 586 as well as a 586 comp carry. I really like the carry one
It broke my heart having to choose between the 2.5 and the 3 inch
Great revolver, one of the best.
That’s a great rig, I have never thought about moon clips for the extraction.
Out here on the farm that seems a great gun. Short, handy, seven rounds and adjustable sights. What is not to like.

My first pistol, still have it and still love it!
I have a 686-1. its definitely one of my favs
Great gun, the one thing is that cylinder is wide. Not bad for OWB but you feel it more with IWB.
Nice👍,
My Grandma has weak wrist ,has difficulty racking .
She loves her S&W 38 ultra lite ,
She doesn't trust lawyers .
She said having no external hammer made S&W 38 ultralite a win for her because of all this defunding police.
She said her Anderson is too hard to conceal. 😁

Very nice EDC. So cool. Would love to carry that.
I love wheel guns, my backup is a 642 lightweight, and I am definitely eyeing the Model 327 8 shot.
Nice gun! I like the mod for the moon clips!
Loved my 686. Wish I would’ve never sold it. I have a GP 100 these days
Hard to go wrong with a 686. I have a 386 nite guard 2.5 barrel and I love it
A 686 is at the top of my wish list...I have a 442 as a summer carry gun
I have one of the newer 6 shot internal hammer versions. Wish I bought the three inch version that Smith produced for the Customs Department.
My very first gun was a 686 with a 4 inch barrel. I would like to pick up the 2.5 inch barrel for carry
I like it. I'm looking for pearl handles for it. They are almost impossible to find.
Beautiful!!!!!
Wonderful I have been looking for this or preferably the 3 inch for over a year. A CS-1 would be nice also
Very nice!
What a beauty!
Great content! Keep it up Steve & B! ✔✔✔
I have a 686-2 with the same barrel length. I carried it for several years almost daily. The only difference is mine is a 6 shot as 7 shot were not yet offered.
I miss the hell out of my 4" 686, one of my many regrets!
Very nice! 👍
I have and carry a 686 no dash 2.5 inch I have never felt under guned.
I have a no dash 66 2.5 inch here in Australia. It would love a 2.5 inch 686 big brother !!
I carry a 44, with Underwood, 125 grain, honey badger's. I wear a lightweight vest in the summer to conceal it
The 686 is a dream “halo” gun in my estimation.
I prefer it in a 3-inch version to get the full-length extractor
I love it!
I have the 386 it the same size but a light weight frame .
I have one and love it
I want the 5" version for bear country. .357 is about the most I can handle well enough to trust for accuracy for me and I never much liked auto loaders
Luv to carry, shoulder holster 😊
My favorite gun I have 4 inch no dash and every one up to dash 5 ,I have 2,5 to 8 3/8 barrel I hunt with the 4 and 6 inch the most my wife carries the 2,5in I love 686 and 586 and model 19 and 29 -629
Good Video.
That' a beauty!
Nice revolver. Personally when I'm shooting 357 loads I like a heavy revolver. 👍👍
THANKS
I might reconsider my first go with the Governor, but also moon clips..
Wonderful revolver! I have the version with the internal hammer nose and no integrated lock…do you know when is it from?
The problem with moon clips is that they bend up easily and it is practically impossible to straighten them.
" The Chubby Snubbie"
Great revolver if you want one of the old ones it is worth the extra money you pay for it.
The only revolver that I’ve open carried is my colt anaconda 6”, it gets some looks in the floral engraved leather quick draw lol
Love the 686 but I prefer a longer barrel over the snubby
I own this 7 shot 686 2-1/2 inch revolver.
I want to swap out the grip.
However there is no mounting screw to remove and pull the original factory grip off. At least I can’t find it.
Please look at your grip closely and tell me where to find it.
Not on the side, not underneath, so where is it?
