    The 85mm is my favorite one. I love the blurry background and how sharp the images are.

      That bokeh is SO GOOD! And I love how each lens sees color a bit different, too!

    I paused at 3:19. That pretty much sealed the deal for me on the 85f/1.2.

    Which lens is suitable for me in APSC(crop sensor) frame like cannon SL2(200D).
    50mm f/1.4
    Or
    85mm f/1.8
    I will use it for portrait photography, wading, low light, and sunlight etc. And i will use it for bokeh & dept of field.
    I hope you will give me the best suggestion. Love from Bangladesh 🇧🇩🇧🇩🇧🇩

    I have them both. 85mm is so buttery and specifically good for portraits. 50mm great for all around general photography, especially nice for cropping during editing. Nice work.

    I just recently got into photography after having my first child and just bought myself the 50mm as I heard it’s a great first lens to get for beginners because of its versatility but still produces great portraits but when I’m ready to upgrade again I’m def looking into the 85mm!! I’ve subscribed! Thanks so much! Looking forward to more videos!

    Nice video. With 50mm the subject is further away. I would have liked to see how face looked filling the frame with both lenses to get true idea if 85mm gives less distortion/elongates the face.

    Well, after 3 Canon DSLRs and 5 lenses (28-105mm 3.5-4.5 as allrounder, 10-22mm EF-S (ultra)wide, a Sigma 50mm 2,8 Macro and a 75-300mm IS USM and the stock lens) i finally got a 50mm F1.4 for cheap and i really love it. On the crop its even slightly too much but for most situations its just perfect especially for the main thing i got it: astrophotography, its awesome how much more light comes thru F1.4 compared to the 2.8 Macro i used until now.

  • @jasonhe6947
    @jasonhe6947 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I feel like I'm leaning toward 85mm. I tried to figure out why, one thing I notice is that the difference in the ration between subject and surroundings. The 85mm leaves the surrounding to a level just enough to make the subject pop, while 50mm seems to have little too much surroundings.

    If shooting in beautiful background I prefer using 50mm . And if the location background a bit crowded I prefer 85mm to makes subject more pops.

  • @Ema-th4uj
    @Ema-th4uj 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The answer is both. In some pictures the bokeh looks better on 50mm, especially when you want to shoot a small subject and you need to be close. The image is just too blury on the 85mm. For portraits I would say both. 85mm gives less lens distortion because you need to stay further from the subject, so the faces will look better, but in some cases the depth of field is too much and the 50mm gives a much more beautiful and subtle bokeh, in others it looks better than the 50 mm. In full body shot the 85mm is just better.

      I'm a landscape shooter but I shoot portraits now and then. The 85 was my go to portrait lens for a few years...then I got the 50. Now the 85 sits in my bag! The 50 is a little lighter, more versatile, and just more fun. If I move in close to my subject I can get very close to the same background blur as the 85. Flintstone zoom! @@JordanBrittley

    I have all 50mm lenses. Get 85mm 1.2 you see the bokeh 3:20 it blurs the background instantly. The 50mm 1.2 it wont blur the image. A 50mm 1.4 side by side with 50mm 1.2 is like the same image quality. 85mm gives you bokeh, if you like the background to be seen clearly and don't care about bokeh then get 50mm. Plus 50mm you don't have to keep going stepping backwards that much when shooting on a full frame. I picked 85, most of my clients like the bokeh shots on 85.

    Not tough 85mm all day for portraits

  • @themarksmanABP

    I ordered the sigma Art 135 yesterday for my canon 750D for outdoor use but if all the 85's I'll probably order the canon 85 1.4 if I was to get one for that IS. Cool vid

      @JordanBrittley  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks scott! I've heard great things about the sigma lenses and would love to try one one of these days! I think my very first lens I purchased was a tamron and I've heard they've come a loooong way! Has that been your experience?!

      Ne aware that if you use a crop sensor you have to consider the crop factor (1.6 in your case). So a 50mm already has the crop of a 85 in you case. You will need a lot of space between you and your subject using a 135 on a crop cam to get everything in frame

    • @JordanBrittley
      @JordanBrittley  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ITS TOO GOOD. What's your fave thing to shoot with it?! And are you a far away 85 shooter or do you like the up close shots?!

    • @SerranoFilmCo
      @SerranoFilmCo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jordan Brittley I’ve never shot with it but after your video, I may be getting me one!! 😍 I loveeee the close ups! I currently shoot with a 50mm on a crop sensor camera which my hubby says is like having an 85?! 🤷🏻‍♀️

    • @teknoah03
      @teknoah03 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your husband is right. I believe that you have to multiply your focal length by 1.6 if you are shooting on a crop sensor.

    • @JordanBrittley
      @JordanBrittley  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SerranoFilmCo Yup, that's right! So to get that 50 look (or something similar) you'd use the 35. I bet you love the bokeh you get on the 50 on a crop censor!

    in terms of 1.2, I will pick 85mm and for 50mm I better take the 1.4 one

  • @Shooter1444

    85mm all day! I have the new Canon 85mm 1.4L with IS and it's super duper quick to focus and the IS is a life saver. I love the bokeh! As long as you're shooting on a full-frame camera, 85mm isn't much of a zoom. I shoot 95% of my shoots with it.

    • @JordanBrittley
      @JordanBrittley  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've heard great things about it being faster than the 1.2. What made you give it a try?! Was it the bokeh or the zoom?

    • @Shooter1444
      @Shooter1444 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jordan Brittley I like the look of a slightly compressed lens and I had the 50mm already, but wanted more utility than going with a 105mm, so 85mm it was. I heard great things about the IS and that the bokeh was smooth, creamy goodness and it was!

      Thanks a lot for your reply ,
      From your experience would suggest investing on mirror or mirrorless camera? I am a beginner mainly looking to buy a camera to take portrait photos of my baby and in general family photos outside in the park etc .
      I was thinking something up 1000$ budget so I am between the canon M50 or eos 80D ?
      Got confused with so much information online hahaha .

      @Anna Kiourtsidi love that and totally get it! If it were me, I’d buy the 6d mark ii used (mirror) or splurge on it when it’s on sale. It’s 1400 right now on Amazon which is a great deal! I could go into a ton of detail in a vid on this so I’m going to jot down your question for a future vid as well!
