your work on melding this ancient video with high quality audio cannot be praised enough! this was the first LP i ever bought, with significant help from my daddy, as i was 5 at the time. although i took years of classical piano, was playing the piano along to this record, by ear at 5, the guitar was the hardest instrument i have learned to play. it probably should not be surprising that when i did pick up the guitar at 25 (pianos don't move around too easily) the only thing that came out of that instrument was the work of JC.
I saw Johnny Cash perform that song in Reno, NV back in the "80's". His fan club president from england was in the audience, when Cash finished the tune he stopped the show and chatted with her from the stage and gave her his harmonicas. Just the kind of caring person i have always percieved him to be
Here's some more details on the harmonicas and how they were used in this song: I was recently asked by a private student to help him with the harmonicas used for this Johnny Cash version of "Orange Blossom Special" so I thought I'd share it here too. I worked with this particular version of the song. My notes below won't work with any other studio or live version... (click below on the "Read More" for the details) -- To play along, you'll need standard 10-hole diatonic harmonicas in the keys of "F" and "Bb". Johnny's technical level was beginner. If you have these two correct keys of harmonicas, you can play this too, no matter how much or how little you've played harmonica. He mostly just blows and draws and makes a few "tuka" sounds with his mouth. Just play along and "fake it" until it sounds close. The most important point is that you change harmonicas at the right times as outlined below. (NOTE: He apparently played his harmonicas upside down. There is no advantage to this, only disadvantages. He was self-taught, so he didn't know. You should not do this. Hold the harmonica with the low notes to the left like a piano.) At the times in the video, he is either playing the harmonica in 1st Position or 2nd Position. In short, 1st Position (also called "Straight Harp") is accomplished by playing mostly blow (exhale) notes in the middle part of the harmonica (i.e. holes 3, 4, and 5 blow). 2nd Position (also called "Cross Harp") is accomplished by playing mostly draw (inhale) notes at the lower part of the harmonica (i.e. holes 2, 3, and 4 draw).
