Ok so DoDonPachi II was not made BY CAVE...hence the quotation marks...but it is a sequel to the original DoDonPachi shmup...so it still has a fun retrogaming lineage! And it's a much easier shmup than most of CAVE's output so it's a great place to get started in this retro gaming genre!

    Welcome to IGS PGM Palooza!
When it comes to arcade boards that really show off what 16 bit art can do everyone always thinks of the Neo Geo but did you know IGS had a VERY similar arcade board with the PolyGame Master? It's retrogaming goodness!
Up next : DoDonPachi II: Bee Storm. Technically it's not a CAVE game but a licensed sequel BASED on a CAVE shmup. Whatever it is...if you have never played a CAVE shmup and you are intimidated by the entire genre this is a great place to start. It's difficult without being an insanely hard shmup!

I find it more of an odd curiosity than a serious entry in Dodonpachi. it went unemulated for years then just, was over night. It looks really nice and has more of a Toaplan feel to it. I also think it was the first shmup to have some kind of network connectivity.
While I think Ketsui is the goat, my favorite starter shmup for people is Mushihimesama. More than any other cave Shmup getting into the zone in that one unleashes all the brain chemicals.

    • @VideoGameEsoterica

Its an oddity for sure but it's still a fun time and considering the learning curve in the genre this is a great place to start for a lot of people

@@VideoGameEsoterica I'll have to give it a serious play later. I'm on one of my Shmup kicks that hit me every few weeks where I play a bunch of them. I have a controller I bought just to play them on.
Took me a good 20 years to actually get good at shmups. It was a Cave game that hooked me in, Guwange. Then of course, Ikaruga

Yeah, I like the lens you see this game through. Definitely "CAVE lite," but still fun and a nice entry point for beginners. Also, I'm pretty sure that "1CC" historically is "1 Credit Clear" or "1 Credit Completion" :)

When a game's only meaningful critiques are "it's not quiiite as good as the absolute elite of the extreme very best", and references to which staff were in the office at the time... then you know you've got a pretty damn awesome game.

This past weekend I tried Mars Matrix and... OH BOY 😂 I think that one, while a lovely game with nice art direction and good gameplay ideas/innovation is definitely too hard for my tastes, and kinda felt it did bullet hell a disservice ultimately by throwing SO MUCH bullets

Not to tell anyone how to play MM but after banging my head against that one forever I started watching some super plays and felt like I'd been playing it all wrong. All the same bullet herding is there with split second mosquito barriers to pass through bullet walls. And of course, the DC version is still the best with some unlockables that make the game playable at a human level.

My issue with the bullet-hell genre is that it gives up the atmosphere of horizontal shooters for a screen full of bullets. Its like a pizza with too many toppings, and you lose the flavor of anything, with everything. With the current state of gaming, I'm starting to better appreciate these more. But give me if someone can give me a new Einhander or Devil Engine, Id be your best friend.
