    Them little Rangers are tough as Hell. I got a 95 with a 2.3 and when I kill that thing I'll buy another. I'll buy another after that one too. I'll keep buying them till there are none left to buy.

    Once again, a truck like that is worth at least double up here in the salty north. Most of them rusted away long ago.

    • @skileg10
      @skileg10 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      CVTaxi Yep. Its crazy how little rust this truck has. This ranger up north would go for 2500$ or more easily.

    • @jonwalstedt1907
      @jonwalstedt1907 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would pay 2500 if I could even find one

    • @DanB95
      @DanB95 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd probably be willing to pay $4500 for something like that here. Things rust so fast here I'd pay that much just due to the lack of rust

    • @blackwar12
      @blackwar12 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've seen trucks even older than that with very little rust here. I find that there's hat "sweet spot" where it's far enough north that you gotta use lots of salt, but if you furher north, salt is a waste of time and rarely used. just to use my own country as an example. Provinces like Ontario and quebec use lots of salt and you're hard pressed to find anything lder than 2000 that isn't a ball of rust, while in Alberta and saskatchewan, you can find trucks as old as the 1970's that are in really good conditions because we rarely use salt.

    The 2.9s are noisy, but they will take abuse. That auto trans will shit the bed long before the engine will.

    • @Somd301
      @Somd301 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      CVTaxi absolutely. The transmissions were a joke but the 2.9 was a pretty hard motor, would of been nice to see this with the 5 speed.

    I loved the 2.9. I had an 89 supercab 4x4 my wife drove. I had 88 reg cab 2wd. But 89 had 2.9l. It had courser mxt tires and it would smoke all 4 on blacktop. It was 5 speed and it would fly. I always missed that engine. Later got a 95 supercab 4x4 with 4.0 in it. It had sport king tires on it but it wouldn't smoke all 4. But I agree this is better looking body than the 89 thru 92 body and 88 had a more roomy can than others in regular cab. My dad has 92 reg cab and it is so tight feeling. I have a 98 supercab now that I bought on new years eve 01. It is by far the best truck I've ever had. I haven't been able to let it go. Even when I bought 05 f150 fx4. Boy am I glad I didn't. Kept me from walking lots of times.

    • @jerlaine1638
      @jerlaine1638 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      John Bates you do realize the bodies allbtje way up to 92 were literally the exact same right?
      Literally the difference was the front grill. Case in point mine is a 92 and stock from the factory has date stamped 1988 front fender

    • @johnbates7424
      @johnbates7424 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brandon Candelario no the body style change in 89. I had 88 and wife had 89. Same interior mostly but difference in body. 89, 90, 91,& 92 were 4 years with square good. 93 went to newer style.

    I remember a boss I had about 15 years ago had an 88 Ranger with the 2.9L and manual transmission. That thing would not die. He finally had to get rid of it in 2005 or so to get an F-150 to tow his 30-foot camping trailer. He passed it on to a relative who continued to drive it for years to come. Trucks like this are hard to come by these days. I'm glad to see this truck was saved.

    Pros of owning the F150- Clean exterior/interior, runs, more power.
    Cons of F150- Future transmission issues, eats more gas cuz dual tanks.
    Pros of Ford Ranger- No rust, bucket seats, clean truck, 4x4!!! Off-roading time!
    Cons of Ford Ranger- Wiring issues, somewhat crappy 2.9L engine.

    The old stick shift Ranger is really one of the best beater trucks out there, the parts are cheap and readily available at most parts stores and junk yards. Easy to work on and it doesn’t take much to keep it up if you’re good to it.

    I’ve had 4 ford rangers with the 2.9L’s and they were all great runners. Some of them like to tick, but it’s the hydraulic lifters they have in them take some time to pump up if the oil wasn’t changed regularly. I’d take another in a heartbeat. But that truck being auto, is Fords dreaded A4LD transmission, and those are basically made of glass, and I wouldn’t touch one of those lol

    • @wetlettuce4768
      @wetlettuce4768 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hey Jay, i had an 86 Ranger supercab 4x4(same as '88), i took the 2.9 out and put a 4.0 in, best thing i ever did. I bought a doner '92 truck and changed everything over to my 86. The 4.0 bolted right up to the 2.9 tranny and the motor mounts. I took all the wireing / dash, brake booster, clutch mouting brackets(inside), out of the 86 and changed everything over to the 92 style but the look(outside) of an 86, it took me a month to do that and i was ready to burn it but it was worth it in the end, i also had drls(daytime running lights :), i dont think i would ever do it again cuz it was too much work.

    This one is a saver. I had a virgin version (first year) 1983 Ranger, which was a problem child, a 1997 (an UN-problem child), and now, a 2008 (still good so far, except for a never ending open recall on the Takata passenger airbag!) The advantage of floor shifters is that they are connected directly to the transmission without any linkage that can go bad on you. I had column shift transmission linkages go bad on me on two vehicles. On one, a 1977 Maverick, it could slip from Park to Reverse when the motor was on (an otherwise great car, except for lousy mpg). The other was on a 1987 K-car UN-Reliant S/W. It got stuck in the Parking gear once. In contrast, I only had one floor shift related problem (on my then 20 year old 1961 VW bug). I think that may at least have been partly my bad for shifting it so hard.

    Of the two, I would keep the Ranger because it is an easier fix and flip it. The 2.9 cracks heads. I had Bronco II with same drive train. The sound system, heater and AC were awesome! I like the manual locking hubs. I wouldn't tow anything heavy with it, but, use it until you can find a nice 88-96 F-150 with a 300 6 cyl and a 5 speed stick for towing cars.

I once had a 73 GMC that got a short in the starter that got hot enough to melt the lead battery cable ends! I was in the middle of a 400 mile trip and was in for a quick fix so when a gas station mechanic told me I needed a new battery I just bought one! I got to my destination and was pulling into the garage and half way in I'd died and the starter wouldn't work at all! I got lucky!

      You would be astonished what menial failure items mint body classic cars are scrapped for in Southern California...
      I know of someone who scrapped a '71 AMC Ambassador with original paint and no rust in Los Angeles because there was something causing the battery to discharge when the car was parked for several hours.

      I doubt the transmission is any good either if it has not been rebuilt. Those 1980's AOD Fords are garbage.

    Little tip coming from a die hard ford fan on those odmeters if they are outta line like that its more like 253k if they are just kinda outta kind they are only at 153k but that one is definitely either 253k or 353k

    Jay. A lot of the vehicles that you have had on your Channel are wicked awesome. And some of them I would even buy. Provided I live where you were. Unfortunately I don't. But seriously. I give you about $1,500 for that Ranger right there. And that's as it sits.

    Jay. Fellow TH-camr here... really enjoy your vids. I wanted to ask a dumb question... if you ever come by another older ranger (88 ranger) can you let me know if you wouldn’t mind sending me a tachometer needle for the gauge and the lenses for the gauges please? I’d pay whatever ya need obviously. Keep kicking ass with your vids man. Great stuff.
