Wonderful! Can you share how does the gearbox works and what the mechanism function. For example, three propellors run in clockwise direction when the boat going forward?

Edmond Chiang sorry of my slow reaponse. My answer to your question is two propellers rotate unclockwise and the other rotates clockwise to conter the torque between both side propellers. This gear box was designed by myself with 2D CAD softwear to utilize the gears of TAMIYA Gear Box set.

Sugi-san, Excellent! I have always been amazed by RC boats. Is it possible to share the process as I am totally new? Are most of the parts like motors, gearbox, etc included in the Tamiya package? If some of the parts are not found in the original Tamiya package then where can I buy them? What is the gear ratio etc.? Why do you need to reinforce the hull and how? Best is if you can list down all the parts you used in making this marvelous piece of work! 本当にすごいです!

Mark Lee Thank you for sending me your interesting comment. Herewith I try to answer to your question as much as I can. This VOSPER kit is just released for display model by TAMIYA as you know in other words, the necessary parts for this RC conversion work had to be collected by myself. Propellers and stern tubes were what I purchased from the model shops. Motor is tuned-up motor based on Mabuchi RE-280, it is what I happened to find in the RC shop, sorry I could not remember the exact brand name. Gear box is my original design that I made by myself from CAD designing to material cutting out and some adjustment process etc.
Only the gears are diverted from the TAMIYA gear box set “Worm Gear Box H.E.” x2sets because I needed two green color gears (40T) to follow my design. The ratio of the gear box is 1: 1.3 geared down. This ratio is one suggestion my considering the balance of three propulsions with one small motor, on the other condition, the decision of the gear ratio could be another one for example using the brushless motor or high performance battery and so on …. The reason of reinforcing the hull is not the necessary condition, but thinking the case of crush to the hard wall, the original hull might be broken because it made of plastic. The way of reinforcing the hull is using the plywood getting from a home center nearby. The battery consists of 6pieces of 4U. The important inside story of this project is the displacement of the original hull is slightly insufficient for installing above mechanism. I modified the volume of the original hull to split two pieces and apply middle plank of 15mm plastic strip. Thanks!

SUGI SAN, Thanks for your prompt reply! I went to a model shop today in Hong Kong where I now work. Good thing is they do sell some motors. If you do not mind i have some more questions as I said I am totally new to RC. 1. What kind of RC unit you recommend- specs like how many channels, brand etc. 2. Did you have to drill holes on the hull yourself? 3. What about the electrical/electronic circuits or PCB etc? I am totally lost as I cannot find any step-by-step guide on how to convert a model boat to an RC one. Also, I suppose the tools you used such as the motors, gears etc only work on the 1/72 model but not the 1/35 model, right? (The one I saw at the shop is a 1/35 model.) Thanks again!

Mark Lee Dear Mark. I will answer to your question with pleasure. Q1andQ3: 2 channel RC system is enough to operate motor and ladder. In case my VOSPER, I use very old system of SANWA product that I used for RC car 30! years ago. If you choose new RC system, you should find small RC set including compact receiver and the smallest servo for ladder operation. Recently I’m starting to build up another model ship converted to RC ship, I intend to install Futaba RC unit T6J, of course I will use only two channels of the six channels. About motor control unit, 10A ECU is enough, for example “VIPER micro 10” is my recommendation. Q2: Yes, I drilled three
holes daringly to penetrate three stern tubes on the hull. I’m sure my VOSPER is 1/72 scale, the model length is about 410mm long and 110mm width. TAMIYA item number is 79004. All things what I prepare for this project are for only 1/72 VOSPER. Especially the gear box was designed just for this ship, because I follow the model dimensions of three shaft spans each 19.5mm from the center. If your plan would go to 1/35 scale ship, you could be released to fight against
the weight reduction of the installed unit. thanks.

Great, you are such a brillant engineer. Just use only one motor to control two propellors! I think you can easily change the gear ratio to alter the rpm, right?

    • @sugisan9872

Edmond Chiang Yes, I can change the gear ratio, but in this case, I have to redesign the motor bracket again. Beacuse this bracket cannot adjust the shaft pich.

    Tamiya lp for painting????

hello dear el el . I used Lacquer paint for hull, and acrylic paint for the other part. There is no reason to change painting for me , just for my stock situation.
