I have an elderly relative, she’s 74 does her own shopping , takes herself to doctors appointments , and enjoys taking her friends out for little drives to their favourite places. Why shouldn’t she continue to drive until the day she can’t?! The way elderly people are being treated is outrageous!!

Blimey, I’m over 70 and I would be amazed and probably outraged if I was referred to as “elderly” and shown surprise that I still drive, fly light aircraft and ride motorbikes, and have just started a new career as the tech lead in a software startup. Your description sounds terribly patronising. 75 is the new 55. On the other and I would be the first to recommend that all drivers over 65 should take regular driving tests!
The government, though Centilink, will lose money (thousands of dollars)from their pension if they sell their homes and invest independently. It would be good if they could have a Family Trust Fund, this way, they can keep their pension. Don't use public trustee as they will take a high percentage of fees.

Richard, just read this on X. “ A 96 year old lady causes death by dangerous driving and obviously shouldn’t have been driving. Now they’re calling for a blanket driving ban on anyone over 75. Bloody ridiculous. The number of healthy robust people this age and who are excellent drivers. What about boy racers?”. I tried to renew my car insurance earlier this year and the best I could find was £1200 a huge increase from previous years of around £300 fully comp. My car is very important to my life for family visits, ten miles away, and shopping which I do not wish to carry for a fair distance to my local, Tesco. It is age discrimination.
My dad, before he passed at 81, was a better driver shortly before his death than most youngsters today. Just because that elderly lady was a bad driver, they want to put everyone under the same umbrella.
Insurance is rocketing in part because of electric vehicle fires. One left at Luton airport brought an entire and almost full multi storey car park down at Luton airport. I was on holiday in Dorset earlier this year. We had a potential problem with our car, and may have had to hire a car to get home. We were told that the local car hire place would only hire cars out to over-25's and under-65's. I am 76, but with a clean licence since 1967. Seemed like age discrimination to me.
The 25's and older has been the car hire rule for decades. The upper limit used to be 75 so they've dropped it. The mAsss will wake up when they realise that they are only allowed to live until 50, down to 40 and even maybe 30. Logan's Run anyone ?

I read that third party insurance is now more expensive than fully comp because insurance companies assume the drivers are more likely to be Jack the Lad drivers who will commit offences. Ask around for fully comp instead it may be cheaper.
My 18 year old grandson was just quoted £8000 for a 1.3 car that was a gift. Should have got him a smaller cc. Not that it would have made a huge difference. He told us that's why so many of his mates don't bother with insurance. Needless to say he's selling the car.
Hello Richard from Staffordshire. My husband is nearly 82, I’ve just renewed our car insurance with Saga no problem at all, I’ve even had a rebate of £35ish because I added another driver to our policy. So maybe Saga could help the gentleman who wrote to you.
We insured our house with saga. Just before our holiday my husband queried the arrival of the policy. I phoned them and they said theyd given us a wrong quote and wouldnt honour it. I pointed out id given them the correct info so it was their error but to make matters worse they hadnt informed us amd we thought we were covered. I asked for a refund and got the 2 week story so they were told in no uncertain terms that i expected a refund that day as theyd cash the cheque and given us no cover. It worked. Be polite but firm
I am 80 with a no claims clean licence since the mid 1970s. I have been insured with Saga for 25 years. They say if my GP and the DVLA says I can drive its fine with them. Its not cheap of course. Around £450 a year.
I think many people, including myself, will be forced to follow your lead; the alternative will be to lose a very valuable aspect if their lives - their independence

When I was nineteen, (in 1966) I realised that England would go to the dogs due to a number of factors, which I won't list here, so I migrated to another, better country. If you do the arithmetic, I am now 77. I drive a pluggable hybrid SUV (which I charge from solar PV ion my roof) and have no issue being insured to drive it. It seems that my approximately sixty years of driving experience stands me in good stead, because I have a top level driving rating. All I have to to do since I turned 75, is to have an annual eyesight test, and get my GP to complete a form confirming I am fit to drive. I have not had a driving accident since I was about twenty years old that was due to my fault. Nowadays I drive effortlessly in thick or thin traffic, in strange places or long distance. For instance, in a few months time I will take my caravan on a round trip of nearly 8,000 km. This is all very different from the apparently crazy situation in England. it seems in almost every way, England is going bonkers. Thank God I left there when I could. It was the best decision of my entire life. My impression is that England is rapidly becoming a failed state.
@@bitebaykon9948 You have me there. I agree, it is essentially a failed state. What a shame that such a once great, noble country fill with generally decent people, could sink to what it has become.

When I called to ask why, with. a lifetime of no claims and a yearly mileage driving mileage of under 1,500 miles and living on a gated, locked community `(so car was safely stored) my age was cited too! There was no recourse for me. I changed to another provider for an annual fee of £340. My neighbour is 94, and possesses a certificate of advanced driving - he still drives - they have just changed the categories to more specific categories it seems - social only would suit the gentleman's needs surely - but insurance costs are skyrocketing which will be the real limiting factor for many people -
Obviously, if they are pushing millions of people of the road by refusing insurance they have to drastically increase the price of insurance for the few people who do still have the right to drive.
I recently renewed my previous cover was with a broker but the new quote seemed excessive, so I went on the comparison site and received a good quote, so I picked oner and went with them. I was 79 it was only a few days before my 80th birthday. I had no problem at all age wise.
This is your first year with them. You have just given them money. They expect you to do that again....just probably a lot more money next year. As another commenter stated...start shopping for a new cover for next year 3 months before this cover expires.... try your insurer and see if what I have just stated applies... and do the same investigation each subsequent year. Loyalty is not a factor any more.
My car insurance renewal just came in, they want double 😳. I said no I will pay same as last year. They declined. I will not be held to ransom for their high prices. I will travel without it if I have to

LV tried to put my car insurance up over 80% last year so went to another company for a couple of quid more than it was the year before. They are all at it.
If electric car owners had to cover themselves, it would be enormous, so we are made to subsidise them. Insurance companies lie and say "its young drivers crashing". Its not, there are fewer young drivers, they are unable to pay for cars these days. Gov, insurance monopolies, all in on the scam, controlled by WEF.
This happened to me. I’m 69 was insured by Hastings. No claims for 20 years. Anyway received a letter saying they could not insure me anymore. My Initial feeling was sod you! My second feeling was I thought I saw my bank Lloyd advertising car insurance so I went to them. Cheaper to start with and no hassle! Sod you Hastings Insurance! At the end of the day insurance companies don’t make money out of us goodie two shoes! That’s the reason!
My Dad was the same as yours Richard, but when he started driving out of a car park the wrong way and various other situs that occurred, I had to intervene and stop him from driving as he was too dangerous! I think as long as someone is still competant enough and most importantly their reaction speed is quick enough then I see no reason not to ensure someone whatever their age!
Yes there is that! However my Dad was also bumping into cars and denting them...He was then diagnosed with vascular dementure. So I had no choice. I'm not saying about any age group I would include myself in that I'm my mid 50s, I'm naturally more cautious but I drive out of necessity so that's probably why.
Hi Richatd my name is Robinson Young. When i reached 70 in 2017 i was still working as a taxi driver as i had been for the previous 35 years in Newcastle where i live. My private car at the time was a Ford Focus ST225 which i had owned for 9 years and still had a clean licence. However, when i received my renewal notice my premium went up from about £500 to over £1200! When i queried this i was told that people my age should not be driving high powered cars. When i pointed out that i was employed as a professional driver, this did not count. When i shopped around i was given the same insult from other insurers so i had to sell my much cherished pride and joy. I am sure you will be getting similar stories from your subscribers. Keep up the good work. Regards, Robinson Young.
Richard. Thank you for your video, I am currently 69 years old and have been driving since the age of 17 but, I had driving lessons at 14 yrs on our school fields after school had finished from one of our dedicated teachers, I don't think they exist anymore, however, even at my age I still love driving which is a joy for me and always will be. There seems to be some bias towards the elderly which in some cases I agree with, but in the main most elderly are careful they don't drive without their seatbelts on they chat to their friends on their mobiles or race down the outside lane with road rage or with a larger in their hand or both!. In my opinion, the people in their so-called "White vans" early in the morning who seem to be always late for work! and love to tailgate drivers in front. UK GOV statistics between 2016-2021 show that drivers 70 and above contributed to 3% of accidents as opposed to 24.5% combined Male and female. I have had an accident-free driving life having driven vehicles in the army, and company cars with a driving certificate from ex-traffic police for excellent driving and observational care to other drivers. I drive a powerful BMW and drive a 9-seater disabled minibus verified with the DVLA at my place of work. My car insurance was £325.00 for fully comprehensive cover with a maximum no-claims bonus, so I searched around and found LV Insurance which was offering cheap cover for pensioners, they quoted 1,500.00! I am now with the RAC which doubled my cover with no other choice. I agree that there should be an alternative insurance setup strictly for pensioners subject to a medical and eye test with an observational drive out under all terrains at a fixed fee by a registered examiner to stop these rip-off insurance companies from penalizing the competent pensioners on the road today.
I am 80 years old with a clean driving licence driving an old car with my son as additional driver and just got my insurance through Saga for £300 per year . ( comprehensive.)
I'm not quite retired, but I'm disabled. Just over 2 years ago, a delivery van with big metal bumpers hit my car and pushed it backwards. I have video evidence showing I had nothing to do with the accident, my insurance told me to take my car to their garage. The garage then informed me that my car was unroadworthy and needed a lot of money spent on it before they could start the work on the body of the car. I asked them to return my car and I sent it for an MOT, which it passed. There was nothing wrong with the car, so I asked if I could send it to a Bodyshop of my choice, and they said yes. However, while trying to find a Bodyshop that would do insurance work, a taxi driver hit my neighbour's car, pushing it into the rear of my car and causing a lot of damage. Again, I had video evidence showing I had nothing to do with the accident. I informed the insurance about what happened, and they said to take my car to the Bodyshop I had chosen for both repairs. The Bodyshop sent in a quote, but then the insurance started to delay the process and wouldn't tell the Bodyshop to do the work. They also doubled my insurance, classing the accidents as my fault until the repairs were done (how can they charge extra when no one has been paid out). As the insurance had no intention of fixing my car, I sought advice from the ombudsman and citizens' advice. Despite the video evidence, they both told me I didn't have a case. What is the point of insurance? If the insurance companies refuse to pay out. The insurance still hasn't fixed my car to this date.

My Father drove his car up to his early 80's but we were worr8ed for him as being a passenger we noticed he increasingly missed seeing things that were important and began misjudging space and speed. He actually recognised this himself and got rid of his car of his own choice. I do know friends who who have had to step in and protect their paren5s and other road users from harm. But I have also noted a lot of other younger people on the roads who's driving should be under scrutiny too. We all make mistakes whilst driving (my self included) and thankfully only a tiny percentage lead to crashes or harm, which is why we have traffic rules and insurance. My own insurance with a company I had been with for years suddenly shot up, I shopped around and ended up paying less than I had with a previous less powerful vehicle. I am driving 41 years and have never claimed on an insurance policy so imagine the profit insurance companies have made from me. They should be obliged to insure anyone of any age providing they are fit to be behind a wheel and do it at a fair price. My advice is shop around and don't be fobbed off with nonsense appeal to those who regulate the insurance companies if necessary!
I have had to tell two ageing family members that they shouldn't drive anymore. Many people of 85 are fully competent drivers, and many are not. The solution in my view is that drivers who are 'old' should have to periodically take quick 15 minute test to determine whether they still have a grip on the situation around them when driving. Not a full driving test, just a 'have you still got it' test.
@@paulaldershot7991 It's a matter of physical deterioration, which happens to us all if we live long enough. For young drivers the problem is poor emotional response to situations - a different problem.
Change your insurance company, it costs more as you age, specifically after 80, but no issue if you’re prepared to pay inflated charges. Include a younger member of your family who has a clean licence as an additional member, it drives the cost down. Did this for my dad who is 91, I’m on his insurance being 66 with a clean licence. It'll be because electric cars are known for exploding and nobody wants the battery to deal with. I watched 7 police pushing a tesla off the road that had been involved in a crash. As a driver for many years I can tell you that the most dangerous drivers are young people and sales reps, who cannot stop overtaking people even in built up areas. Women are getting more like men and drive with anger and impatience. Women picking their children up from school are crazy if running late. "According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, drivers between the ages of 16 and 17 are more likely to be involved in car accidents than drivers from any other age group. Additionally, teen drivers cause more injuries and deaths than other drivers, including injuries to themselves." I would rather be on roads if only 65 and over were allowed to drive!! It makes perfect sense for drivers over 70 to get a health clearance from their doctors. An over 70 who is healthy in mind and body is no danger. People driving drunk or on drugs, will always be with us.

The increase in uninsured cars on our roads over the last few years reflects what is going on in order to remove people in general from owning a car and having the right and freedom to travel and move about freely. And will no doubt lead to further increases and the use of insured vehicles. Combine that with Labour's planned fuel and road duty increases over the forthcoming 4-5 years, only the very wealthy will be able to afford to own a vehicle.

You need to shop around for car insurance. There are still good deals out there. Just renewed my insurance with a new company, for what amounts to being the same cost as last year, since the firm l had been with for some years ratcheted up their quote this time around. When I rang them to say I was cancelling their policy, they requoted to match the new company l was transferring to! Too late, I said, I've done it now. The new policy includes benefits the old policy didn't provide. Price comparison websites are useful.
I'm also currently with Markerstudy, who made me victim of an insurance scam last year. They have a 'policy' where if someone accuses you of hitting their vehicle, and photographic evidence deems that it could have a tiny percentage possibility of happening then they say it did! I wrote to the Ombudsman pointing out that this practice violates the prime base of law, where they're saying that you're guilty until proven innocent!! I'm firmly of the belief that ALL areas of administration, including the Ombudsman, are simply tools to enforce long-term Government policy. After pointing out the basic human rights relating to this aspect I'm still waiting on them for a decision ..I'm not holding my breath!

YES. I have personal experience of being refused insurance due to age of over 80 despite being with the same insurer for many years. There are sites available (still?) on line but the cost is double on average to what was paid previously. The bottom line on this is that if this becomes normal then single people who need their car to go to the shops to buy food may have to fall back on the state. Here is the real problem Richard. Its people like you. You haven't got the guts to advise people how to push back the state when people like me contact you and tell you examples of how they use our law to push back the state. You make many videos highlighting problems but refuse to offer solutions. I, and others, have written to you explaining how I have 3 times stopped police assisting bailiffs who were attempting to use legal warrants to enter houses. Richard you are well aware of the power of the birth certificate Bond as listed on the New York Bond Market! As the police and other corporate bodies self insure against all claims made against them. With the power of the Bond behind us we too have that power to self insure! All we have to do is take control of our bond! I too have just received a letter from my insurance broker saying they can nolonger offer "Standard personal lines of insurance" since many key insurance companies have withdrawn from operating via brokers! This is due in part to the very high level of claims and the nature of these claims where EV's are involved. Such as the Luton Airport fire, the North Sea ferry disaster where hundreds of high end cars were destroyed, etc. etc.
They won't tell you its the Teslas though, they will lie and try and blame all those young drivers..the ones walking about on the street because they cant afford 4k a year to insure.

Hello. I am 80 yrs of age and have all my faculties and have a 350cc Royal Enfield motorcycle, a very slow and steady plodder ( not me, the bike) that I ride on nice days around the quiet country lanes of the Lincolnshire Wolds.. Last year at 79yrs of age I paid a reasonable sum of £75 for my insurance. This year I received a renewal quote from the same company 'Swinton' of £405. Either that was a polite way of saying they dont want my business any more or they were taking me for an 'Old Fool'. I found a quote elsewhere for £110 fully com for social, domestic and pleasure. About the same time I have just renewed our motorhome insurance for a reasonable £245 so it seems some insurance companies are just trying it on. It pays to look around. Regards.
The NFU when I phoned them a regarding vehicle insurance bearing I have full no claims bonus stopped me dead, with telling me it was their policy that they do not insure people at Eighty years and over and they claim to be insurer of the year.
Those in power mismanage taxpayers money in all manner of ways. They don't actually suffer as a result of their incompetence. They do not care one iota. We are taxed to the hilt on just about everything from the day we are born to the day we die (and after with Death Duties). Corporations are as guilty in many ways. My own vehicle insurance doubled last year without any reason other than the insurers know they can get away with it because it is illegal (or, as Starmer might say, "irregular") to drive a vehicle without insurance. Everywhere we turn Government and businesses are take, take, take. These immoral creatures couldn't care less as long as their pockets are full of other peoples money.

The accidents that happen are nearly always young drivers older drivers are the best they don’t need to speed everywhere they are careful and respect other road users if you check records you will see who causes the most accidents it’s always the young fast idiots
Look at the other end too. Young drivers are waiting a year for driving tests then face premiums that are literally thousands. They now want to ban them from carrying passengers. They are trying to remove any incentive to take to the roads.
A lot of older people also live in rural locations with poor public transport. So by making insurance expensive and difficult they are likely making people move into the towns and cities. Killing 2 birds with one stone....
Here in Germany we have less accidents with older people. Now we have small cars for inner city use. They are slow but useful to get your groceries or get to appointments.

I at 61 was quoted around £700 for renewal, so went on comparison site and took cheapest on offer. Only need the piece of paper to be legal as will never go through insurance again for repairs as last time ended up paying anyway to get the repair of the recommended repairer repaired. Shoddy and dangerous repair!!!!!!
he was right Richard , just been looking round for insurance for car , social only
Long years ago, Ambrose Bierce in "The Devil's Dictionary" defined insurance as, "an ingenious modern game of chance where the player is invited to entertain the delusion that he is beating the man who keeps the table."
I am 77 years old and my car insurance costs have doubled in the past two years. Even though my driving habits have not changed and after shopping around. Outrageous ageism.
Notice how silent politicians are about it???
We are all subsidising musks dangerous battery cars.
Had the same, when I passed 75 my quote with LV for my Audi Q5 went from £ 385 to 1400 plus and I have a clean license.
When your 70 time we stopped paying tax to a Corporation. Look at the Que Vardi Act it says we are all dead.
And how about the people in their 20's a lot of them should go back to be tested.
Price dropped £1000 per year, also worth limiting your mileage to say 3K ie 60 miles per week. It all helps.
Brilliant, thank you. The insurance price algorithm thinks is more clever then us but that is simply not true.
My grandson is a bus driver so classed as professional he’s only 18 so would make my insurance go up but give it a few years and I might be asking to add him on mine. I’ve often wondered what insurance it costs the bus company because his own car insurance is ridiculous.
60 miles a week 😮 I'm lucky if I can stay under 900 miles a month.

It'll be because electric cars are known for exploding and nobody wants the battery to deal with.
I watched 7 police pushing a tesla off the road that had been involved in a crash. The 2 normal cars could b driven off the road but the electric 1 would not budge. They are dangerous to society I reckon.
its the electric car that has done it for you unfortunately , they are very expensive to repair and as for the batteries, lets not go there.

I am a 77-year-old man and I have been driving for 58 years. I have never had an accident that was my fault. I was an HGV driver and I drove coaches. The government seems determined to remove older people from the roads and condemn them to mobility scooters. It's ok for Starmer he will be chauffeured everywhere he goes.
Hi Richard I'm over 60 and many friends my age are having their car insurance put up more than £150 per year. A friend of mine over 80 years of age had hers put up almost double.
This looks to me as though they're intentionally pricing insurance to make it unaffordable, thereby pricing people off the roads...
Old age "prejudice"????
So much for government laws etc to "protect" the vulnerable!!

The labour/wef return to the "privileged class"!

A few laws like that creeping in. Guilty until innocent types.

Regards.

We are taxed to the hilt on just about everything from the day we are born to the day we die (and after with Death Duties). Corporations are as guilty in many ways.
