An email address is not proof enough of someone using BBC iPlayer services alone. They would need a MAC address and IP address as proof that it accessed in the UK and not been used by a bad actor or third party maliciously. Also a VPN would be able to bypass all this, I would find it near impossible to get a full conviction from any of this information these days as people accounts especially email accounts get leaked by bad actors all the time. You hear it on the news another company had a data breach and millions of customers information leaked, that would include passwords and email address's and lots of other useful information for data brokers to sell on the dark web.

Because if you are accessing I-player without one it doesn't matter if you are a guest or not that can and probably are tracking your use of BBCIplayer through you ISP address number which is unique to your address. I fear if you have not got a VPN its only a matter of time until you get the goons on knock on your door with the police with a warrant.

Short answer no - it's a common misconception.
Long version - sharing data is not illegal if there is a reasonable need to do so and you have informed the consumer that the sharing may occur if you sign up to the service - you almost certainly agree to this by signing up for BBC iPlayer. The BBC can also claim that the sharing is related to law enforcement activities, which also is a legitimate reason for data sharing.

So I just called to cancel my tv license as I don't watch any live tv or use any bbc services. I'm honestly amazed at how scummy Capitar and the BBC are.
Threatening to send police to my door if I choose not to renew my no license needed after 12 months. You need a warrant and efficient evidence for that to get passed mate and I'm under no obligation to speak to your agents. They are sales men.
Trying to insist that you need a license to watch Netflix or prime lol. Only if it's a live signal. You are allowed to watch catch up TV such as Netflix, prime, and now TV just as long as it's not live and you can't use BBC iPlayer.
I responded to him and said I'm aware of the do's and don'ts and have done my research. He tried to suggest that I am like many people who I claiming to have done their research.
You simply respond by repeating that you are aware and you do not need this explaining.
They also tried to suggest I need a license to have a mobile phone and any other devices, I kept my response short and sweet and said well I don't want any live broadcast signal or use BBC iPlayer. So again I am aware of my rights and what I need a license for. Don't waste your time explaining why they are wrong its to get you to talk to them.
They threatened to send someone to my door. So I kept my. I'm set short and sweet that I will not be engaging with your sales agent any further, as I am under no obligation by law and I have declined. I no longer need a TV license.
They might also threaten you like they did with me, they might also threaten you like they did with me with a thousand pound fine. If they were telling the truth they would tell you that the average is £180 and that's only if you incriminate yourself.
If an agent comes to your door, you shut the door and say no Thank you goodbye.
They will not have police with them as this would require evidence that there is a crime committed, and if that's the case the police would only come to execute a warrant and keep the peace.
If what they were saying was true, the police would be called every time you say no to a salesman on your doorstep who might be trying to flog you a hoover.
Don't be scared of these people, I honestly didn't believe that they could be that scummy to try and lie, but the less you say and the more you show that you've done your research the better.
They might try and state that you need a license for having a TV, this is also not true, It states on the BBC tv license website a license is not needed for owning equipment only if it's been used for live broadcasting services which they have to prove. In order to do that, you would have to either incriminate yourself by talking to them, or they would have to find evidence. If you are like me and you don't watch live TV or use iplayer, you have nothing to worry about.
They will ask you to confirm your name and the address, if you don't, they will stay that they can't continue with the process of cancellation. I tried to avoid this as they already have this information. They just want me to confirm it so they can visit. So my recommendation is don't bother ringing them like I did. Yes, I will get no letters for the next 12 months but afterwards I'll be bombarded. Just cancel your direct debit. They will tell you that you are eligible for a refund. But if you are serious about canceling, it's best not to engage with them. You'll save money anyway by not needing to pay £170 every year.

Wow that sounds like a faff. Luckily I have never had a TV license and the only action I ever took to any of the letters was to recycle them. I've only ever had one visit, told him I didn't need a license. He tried to tell me that an investigator may come round to check and I just said that's fine if he brings a warrant. Never had a visit or a letter from them since lol.
