Forest Terrarium with HUGE Beetle │ Closed Native Terrarium - 1 Month Update

- In this video we take a look at the native terrarium built on the 20th of July 2020. The terrarium was home to a vast array of creatures and this video will be showcasing some of the life still present alongside newer organisms that have emerged. If you notice things aren't shown in the video that were present in earlier ones it's either because it's hiding during filming or it has perished.
The glass has created a new habitat where springtails, mites and tardigrades roam. I find it so fascinating that such a diverse community of species have carved out an existence on the glass. The humidity on the glass provides the moisture they need for egg laying. The glass also builds up with organic detritus over time which provides food lower down in the food chain. I imagine the species that live on the glass are also safer from predation than on the terrarium floor. I find the diversity in species astounding and I was so amazed to see a tardigrade!
The terrarium floor hosts a different community of organisms. Isopods, spiders, springtails, snails and slugs. This different habitat is dominated by two main predators. A Harvestman and a Black Clock Beetle. The Black Clock Beetle seems to have gorged itself on prey, which caused it to grow fat.
Organisms such as the rove beetle, millipede and earthworm were also present, however I struggled to get any good footage of them for the video because they live underground where visibility is poor.
That ground beetle is not fat, it is pregnant!
I think you're right! This is a great discovery, thank you!!
@@Jartopia that doesn't bode well for the other species living on the surface :'D
How can you tell?
@@thestranger2003 it looked more like eggs
Was it?
Dude, the camerawork is absolutely astounding. I can't wrap my head around what type equipment one must have to be able to document creatures as small as a tardigrade. Bravo!!
Indeed it is a great job filming on thos scale. Macro lens I'm sure. Very nice work.
The secret is a lot of skill, and a 1500$ macro lens
This is the coolest terrarium I’ve ever seen! Such incredible biodiversity! I love all of the different micro environments!
This is terrific... The original video of t'is terrarium inspired me to make my first terrarium with fauna - an despite losing the woodlice and a particularly large species of springtail I can now observe a happy colony of millipedes, earthworms, springtails, mites and snails from the comfort of me own jar - and I know for a fact there's at least one baby centipede in there ready to unleash hell when he gets big enough
how do you get all those species in there tho? did you catch em and put em in or did they just appeared because of eggs or sth. in the soil?
The soil, depending on where and how much you collected can have huge variety of organims and eggs. @@henrikklaen3519
Congrats on your channel's success. Well deserved. Your videos are beautiful, haunting, and for me philosophical. I'm a professional gardener and have rethought how I move through outdoor spaces since subscribing. Thank you!
Hell yeah dude
@@QuentinH-o9x oh fuck yeah mannn!
1:12 this guy has cartoonish proportions i love him
I didn't know it was possible to see a tardigrade without a microscope o.o
same
its the camera. It has amazing quality and zoom.
Yeah that's one hell of a camera. I wonder where he got the water bears though.
@@TH-camiscool865 Probably just from the soil- tardigrades are everywhere, just really hard to spot
@@athel7764 No idea tbh
Amazing that the slug can survive that long in such a small enclosure with a predator like the clock beetle in there
@Zoran Novosel his name is turbo
@Zoran Novosel it has air jordans on
@@Cargoshots nah
"vi är där på en kvart vi har snabba skor
Allt som vi gör är ballala bror vi går upp vi går ner vi är som Anna bok.
@@Cargoshots No, this is a natural amount of insects. Soil, rocks, moss, and especially leaf litter are teaming with life even more than shown in this very video. This is all sustainable, there are multiple species that share the same general niche and have one specific niche decreasing competition. The only concern is the large beetle, but it won’t cause too much trouble considering debrivores are abundant, but time will tell.
I finally built a terrarium, too, but in mine the ecosystem is totally different. The isopods for example are living their whole live on the surface, the apex predators are centipedes and there are a lot of different isopod and millipede species. Anyway, your videos are the best! Please continue!
If I want to create my own, do I have to water it ? And how often or how much ? Thanks 😇
You dont need to water it, if it's a closed terrarium. Closed terrarium means that there can't get water or air in or out the terrarium. If its closed like that you just need to water it one time, when you build it.
Hope that helps you🤗
hi i wanna make my own too 🥺 do you have to put isopods, springtails and other bugs in there??
I think you can put special isopods in there as well, but be careful, if you put too much of them in, a lot of isopods will die.
But i wanna say something else. Please ignore what i said last time an make some the jar not compleate closed, because i build another one a few weeks ago and all died because if there is no fresh air but a lot of organic matter, the bakterias in there will produce methan that kills the animals :(
@@-insertnamehere-5503 oh no, i'm sorry to hear that :'( i'll have to do some more research before I build one so I can prevent that from happening to me !!!
How fascinating your terrarium reach an equilibrium, happy to see all these organisms alive and kicking.
One of these videos randomly came up in my TH-cam feed and I’m so glad I checked it out! This is now one of my faves. The music, the filming, the little animals, etc all amazing! So well-done
Same!
Your videos are wonderful and have given birth to a new passion for me. And the fact that you give us updates over time for all these ecospheres is perfect, please continue!
This is probably the most interesting and relaxing thing I have done this entire year! Fascinating!!!!!!
The harvestman at the beginning is so cool. Wish I had known they weren't really spiders when I was little, probably wouldn't have freaked me out so much
I love how you treat every living being with respect. 🧡
i love this!! i had a terrarium with 3 generations of rollie pollies, 3 generations of common garden snails, 2 generations of common black beetles, a caterpillar, plenty of earthworms, and a few small spiders! i loved it to death but ultimately decided to place the earth within it under my back porch for them to live normal buggy lives once more - mostly because we had a rental inspection coming up and our lease bans more than the 2 cats we have (and yes, insects, bugs, and fish were all clearly listed in it), but also because my terrarium was a much smaller one and it was definitely starting to get a bit crowded. the experience was amazing though, one of the most fulfilling hobbies i've ever had, i did so much research to help them all thrive and watching them make wee lil babies was just the most adorable thing!! thanks so much for sharing!
Thank you for this video. The life inside this terrarium is full of different species and they are thriving beautifully. I just built a terrarium yesterday and there was an insect roaming around. It was through this video that I found that it's a species of springtail. Now I will find more of them and add into the terrarium. Thanks again!
The soothing music and informative text is so calming. These videos make me feel so peaceful and I really appreciate your content. Thanks for giving us a slice of tranquil microcosmic enjoyment to brighten our lives.
The bugs and the music is giving me Hollow Knight mood. Absolutely astounding terrarium, and great camera work capturing the beauty in these creatures.
Aye let’s goooo the harvestman still alive😼 he came in clutch for a month
He's dead now

The devotion you have to documenting these terrariums with a macro lens and good camera work is astounding, man.
I love these videos and i'm very thankful for having this sort of content for free on the web to watch. I kinda wish you made like a 30min or 1h video like this one, with the same style of soundtrack and it's ok if you loop a few scenes, so i could watch it before falling asleep.
The slug jamming the beetle's mandibles with mucus has got to be the most badass thing I've ever seen a mollusk pull off!
beautiful and peaceful oasis, calms the soul and mind.
I remeber when this channel had 10k, you have grown so fast! 💖
TH-cam algorithm got this guy hard, He went from 2k to this in less than a month
@@AntaresSQ01 Yea ik
i was here before 200 subs
@@scorchinggoat9589 Same but i only subscribed at around 9-10k when he rlly caught my attention
Incredible footage. The perspective is also great. It's easy to forget what drama unfolds down in the ground.
I think it's neat to see all of these terrariums. You get to see things you wouldn't see in the normal environment they come from. Cudo to you.
Your videos are great not just to watch, but also to learn! Thank you very much! Greetings from Brazil!
In France we call the garlic snail the 'self saucing snail'
lollll i love this.
Lmao
Comment vous le dites en français? L’escargot qui se sauce lui-même ne sonne pas très bien..
This is my favourite terrarium, I could watch it all day! I like the harvestman as they're a gentle giant.
That slug said “OI NO BITING MATE” and took off like a bat out of hell. Lol
Didn’t think that slugs could move that fast lol
This channel reminds me a lot of Ants Canada in a way. I’m glad I found this during its somewhat early days, I think it’ll grow to be huge!
4:19 whoops, sorry mate. Just passing by, don't mind me.
"Please, don't eat me"
😂😂
These are some of the coolest videos on TH-cam! The camera work and amount of life in the small space is incredible!
It was really amazing seeing the difference in biodiversity between the previous and current forest floor terrarium
By far my favorite ecosphere of yours. Not that the others are inferior, I just love the aesthetic and biodiversity of this one! Totally inspired to make my own someday.
Great camera work in those closeup shots! I really like your videos. It is always interesting to see an update like this.
I could watch these all day! I remember the salt water Jar and I was so upset when the crab passed away! Keep up the great videos 👍🏼
Always your videos and your projects are small miracle full of life....thanks 🙏🙏🙏
this made my mood so much brighter
Wow! A whole fascinating world inside this small terrarium!
Yeaaa love the Springtails! Such interesting looking insects.
So much life in such a small space. Beatifully captured!
What great videos you make. So relaxing and as always a healthy reminder of the diversity and beauty of life, however small.
Quite brilliant! Well filmed and nice not to have an annoying commentary, the text are perfect, well done.
not only the terrarium is a beauty... your camerawork is also !
I am so happy I found your channel! It is so calming and beautiful to see how these creatures live and thrive in such small ecosystem. You make me want to start building my own terrarium. And great great camerawork! It's like I'm watching a professional documentary. I'm officially in love with your channel and will binge watch all your videos. Keep up the good work! ❤️
I got a pickle jar and made my first one 2 days ago thanks to this channel !! Thank you for the new inexpensive hobby!!
Awesome video. Love the detail, the music, the simple text.
You have TARDIGRADES!!! That’s the coolest, I love them so much!!
Glad to see my homie the garlic snail is okay. I love the huntsman too, as well as the various springtails. I’m very curious how this ecosphere will change over time.
This is a source of endless fascination. Well done.
That one was super busy and full of life. . . thanks for these videos they are awesome. They really make me want to do research and make my own for myself and my kids
i've been eagerly awaiting this update. good to see it's still going strong.
This terrarium is so beautiful! I wonder how you got all those species. My favorite one is the slug. I hope to see more videos of this terrarium in the future 💚🌿
Excellent photography, music, editing and info! Thank you! xxx
I love your videos, they’re so mesmerizing. Can’t wait for an update!
youre choice of music is perfect !!! so relaxing and peaceful i love it
I don't like bugs but I find this incredibly fascinating and satisfying to watch. You have earned another subscriber.
I imagine David Attenborough narrating this along with the music. Bet you can't unhear him now :)
thanks jartopia, I've lots of interesting things to find out more about. cheers from Australia!
I do not know what type of camera your using, but dang man. Legit you work for national geographic or something. Your cam work is beyond impressive. You make that small jar look like I am in the middle of the forest surrounded by trees and wildlife for miles around. Absolutely love it. I am thinking giving a terrarium a go! I love watching nature unfold. I love watching life cycles of the animals and the terrarium, and or ecosphere. Nature is unbelievable. We should being more to save than destroying it for human benefit.

Great work!
My favorite video of the week.
Love the native terrarium I have a native terrarium aquarium and paladarium I love to collect newplants and insects for them and see how they fair, my paladarium has two box turtles and some minnows so many of the insects in that one end up as food. You taught me recently what an egg carrying copepod looks like, I had thought they were a different species until you showed a specimen in one of your videos.
Lets go your videos are so good that I made my own Terrarium. I had so far for 1 month and there is a fly inside. I don't know how it got there, I did not add it in.
Maybe eggs?
The soil you put in may have had eggs in.
Could have been a maggot inside. This happened with my terrarium except the maggot died, which unfortunately caused a mold outbreak that killed the terrarium as I didn't have springtails in there to clean the mold up. You're lucky yours became a fly lol.
@@Cruxity_YT lol. my brother also made one and mold was everywhere but It went away I think his terrarium was so bad the mold couldn't even survive. We remade it and now It is better. His was kept in the dark Conner so thats why everything died.
@@MichaelHolding69 yeah i kept mine in direct sunlight thinking the moss would thrive better... I was clearly wrong 😂
4:19 i love how that mite was just casually strolling until it bumps into the spider's leg and be like
"Nope Nope Nope Nope Nope"
I could watch these for hours
The quality of your videos has gotten so amazing!!
Love your content! Please keep it up! Has made getting through college mid terms a little easier!
I love this terrarium! I have many house plants and now I feel I want to make one too :3 Also the way you film it and stories of the interactions teaches me a bit about how interesting life in the forest soil is. Thank you for your videos, they relax me and fill me with fascination and love.
I feel so inspired by you! I normally don't like insects at all, but I think I would love to have one of these to study them and see how cool they actually are. Keep it up! ❤
Honestly I am fascinated by these videos. I'm eager to see the progress of this jar and its inhabitants.
I really like this terrarium!! I'm very fond of that black clock beetle.
This video is amazing hope you continue with updates
Hey Jartopia! Just wanted to say I found your videos and I fell in love immediately! Your videos are so calming and soothing and yet so exciting and fascinating to see what flora and fauna appear in your created ecospheres. I definitely want to get myself one at some point; perhaps this Christmas coming up in a few months.
Anyway, again I just wanted to say awesome work. I binge watched all of your videos and I'm really excited to see your future ones too!
I wanna see you revisit some of your earlier terrariums - we deserve updates!
I just randomly discovered your channel. Your videos are very interesting! Thanks
Awesome bro this channel has made me wanna start my own terrarium. Not sure what i wanna make yet but excited thinking about it!
Have you made one?
I didn't know Tardigrades were cannibals.
Very relaxing & educational video. Love the music too
Thats some very nice project! Really nice shots too.
This is very cool. Gonna get a terrarium going when I get a good place for it. Nice vid.
YOURE AMAZINF UR VIDEOS JUST CHANGED MY LIFE
I just found your channel and I must say your work is astounding! I love everything about this.
Globular springtails are cute
I love these videos the only thing I wish is to know the rough measurements, I’d love to know how big they are. Also is every animal breeding or are some just singular organisms? Anyways thanks for the content love what you did.
I think the clock beetle is alone in there. I could Google whether female clock beetles can reproduce asexually, but my gut is telling me the answer is probably "no".
Edit: wrong "their," fixed now
Me too, I wonder how big is that jar, where it’s kept, what temperature and what kind or light for how many hours per day, etc.
Amazing! Such a raw, dangerous world and also so beautiful.
This is really impressive, good job! Would love to see an update later
Thanks! I uploaded the 6 month update like yesterday.
@@Jartopia I just saw it and its amazing!!!!! I might do the same in Scotland

I love this channel. It’s such a peaceful change of pace. I bet those jars stink on the inside.
Im sure I used to catch Black Clock Beeltes as a kid growing up. Great videos.
Fantastic, one of my favourite closed terrarium really
