    Niggas need stop saying Illmatic is Nas’ best album. It Was Written is literally Illmatic but better lyrically and producing wise. Nas’ lyrical wordplay reached its peak in ‘96. No other incarnation of Nas can step up to ‘96 Nas. He was just a monster at that time.
    ‘Take It In Blood’ and ‘I Gave You Power’ shit on Illmatic’s entire track list.

    What people have to realize is that Illmatic was an experiment by the top producers in the city HANDPICKING Nas to be the face of their combined beats into one project.
    Nas didn't orchestrate Illmatic,he just rapped over the beats.So when you see him rap over beats that are perceived to be horrible its due to the fact that he never had an ear for beats like his peers that are still active (Jay or Andre 3000,BlackThought etc).

    • @Israel-nb7ip
      @Israel-nb7ip 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Joe Basile what do you mean by "good beats?" If you want club bangers and radio hits then NO. But if you want Hip Hop tracks then Hells YES. Nas picks Hip Hop beats and then proceeds to elevate them. Plus he has super classic beats on multiple albums. I can give you a list if you want.

    • @GABA-Gool
      @GABA-Gool 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't have to give me a list, I own nearly his whole catalog. I don't listen to Nas for beats anyway, his story telling and lyricism make up for any production shortcomings. Plus, I think he makes it work for the most part in the way he rides a beat. But, if I'm trying to be fair, he has a LOT of bad production. Doesn't mean he doesn't also have a lot of moments, but if you consider how long his career has been, of course he'd at least have a decent amount of good production scattered. This is all opinion, if you disagree that's fine. No, I don't mean club banger production, that shit annoys me anyway. I mean poorly mixed; lazily sampled, oddly stacked, awkward rhythms, unpolished, borderline amateur production. Yes, you could throw a bunch of Premo; Havoc, and Remi beats at me that are good if not great, but the usual team he has behind the boards I just find don't really give his lyricism the background or justice that it needs/deserves.

    • @Israel-nb7ip
      @Israel-nb7ip 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joe Basile I own his entire catalog as well and I would really like for you to give me a few examples that fall into what you outlined regarding beats being poorly mixed, lazily sampled, oddly stacked etc. I won't sit here and say that I don't think Nas has had complete misses with regards to song quality but I simply don't attribute that to him consistently having below average production. The people who I usually hear say that are people who want to hear mainstream radio or club songs given Nas stature in the game. You're right, we have a right to our opinions...but that doesn't mean we can't have a conversation. The Nas tracks that I've thought were bad mostly had to do with a poor hooks, inconsistent rhyme delivery or just Nas completely reaching conceptually. Again, not to say he hasn't had subpar production in some instances but to say he has "consistently" subpar production? Nah, I can't agree with that on face value. His beats are pure Hip Hop. That said, I do agree that there have been instances where some of his more brilliant album material could've been elevated by street sweeper production.

    I agree with both guys. Nas picks some awful beats. Stillmatic album is a prime example. The Stillmatic intro might be one of the hardest songs Nas ever did, but it is only one verse, then comes Ether, then the beats just fall off. The flyest with AZ is dope, but you can't start an album off that strong and then just fall off until track 8 or 9.

    It’s a known fact that Tupac didn’t rely on himself to pick beats. That’s a true producers role. A lyricist is not required to know the ins and outs of production. It’s a bonus if they do. Just like it’s a bonus if a rapper can also produce like DJ Quik for example.

    Nas isn't the worst beat picker but he did have a terrible spell in the late 90's with them shitty The Firm, I Am & Nastradamus albums. Yeah those albums did have some joints but overall they wasn't good. Hip Hop Is Dead & Streets Disciple had average production for the most part, nothing really wack on them from what i remember.
