Oil is cheaper in real dollars than it was twenty years ago. Solar cells and high efficiency equipment are also cheaper in inflation adjusted dollars. a channel called technology connections made a video recently about the importance of window awnings. they can drastically change how much your house heats up in the summer. If you can afford some, you should probably get them
I’m going to give another side. I live in Phoenix metro area & only saw a small increase this summer. On average, my summer electric bill is around $150/mo for a 1200 sf home. But the 8 non-summer months, it averages $45/mo. Yes it’s more in Summer, but not crazy like they’re suggesting and three seasons it’s peanuts compared to other parts of the country. This is why you should research utilities when moving/buying a home like local schools and crime rates. Municipal Utilities are almost always cheaper. SRP has much lower rates than APS for example. The same applies in other markets like California where SMUD (Sacramento municipal) is pennies on the dollar (rate wise) vs PGE.

I lived in Tucson from 1971 to 1979 and attended the UofAZ during that time. I lived with my parents. The house had both a swamp cooler with refrigeration (AC) back up for those 100++ days and nights. I am wondering if people still use the swamp cooler technology as it uses a lot less energy. Doesn't sound like it. Also, sounds like the home builders haven't built houses for the Arizona climate. With everyone is moving to Arizona, demand is significantly higher since the '70's, so it costs more to meet that demand. So, of course, Wall Street is there along with those who have positioned themselves along the money trail. Too bad that the State's leaders haven't demanded houses built for Arizona's climate, which include using both of the cooling systems to keep costs down. Won't be surprised if the Dems win hands down, but I doubt anything will change.
Take a look at your government and who are some of their big contributors to their campaigns surprisingly, well, maybe not so surprising your local government, it's selling you out. For a campaign contribution. Why is it that we don't have options for electricity and our basic utilities. We shouldn't have only one option..

This is not a republican/democrat issue. California is democrat and has the 2nd highest rates in the country even with having solar. In fact they are making it more expensive to put up solar.
No, corporations are in charge of this country. The Republicans are the ones that gave corporations unlimited power through something called “citizens United “
Same thing happened down under when our government decided to privatize the power grid. Why? Well they said it was to put some competition in the market & drive down prices, but sold it to a majority stake holder who quickly doubled the rates. Then exactly like you guys our government agreed to every price rise they asked for. Funny they say that you shouldn't hate the government but in our case they knew exactly what would happen even before selling the grid as we followed the New Zealand model which went the exact same way. In other words they knew we'd be screwed but did it anyway. Democracy these days is a broken dirty thing ruled by big business & it's cronies, the ones we call politician's.

This is the real problem. Civilization in Arizona is a stubborn rebellion against nature. Anyone who moves there should be aware that it's not reasonably sustainable.
That is an issue, but it is not the current issue. Since going back in time is not currently possible, the choices are changes to the rates.
What better place for solar than a desert? But, the utilities make distributed power production (solar panels) as difficult as possible.
@@RedScareClair Sure, but should we build igloos in deserts and expect them not to melt ? Some people try to live in places where nature tells them they do not belong in
65+ year AZ resident. My thermostat is set at 85 degrees in the summer to lower my electric bill. I was fully retired but had to go back to work to afford food. Unfortunately, we struggle to elect ACC officials to represent consumers over the utilities.
I voted early and I voted for for the three Democratic candidates.
For-profit utility companies are a bad idea. The cities or the state can provide electricity at a lower cost.
It's PROFIT and the AMOUNT of profit as well. AND the list is extensive: For profit utilities, meaning electrical / gas etc., for profit WATER and SEWER UTILITIES, for profit healthcare, for profit insurance, for profit medicines, for profit communication services, for profit education, for profit basic housing, and it's all taxed, then we pay it with our already taxed money. I've been screaming about corporate greed, CEO salaries AND PAY OUTS when they get fired! They're making an average of $33,000 an hour, for a 40 hour week. While an employee making $30 an hour, is eligible for government subsidized assistance for food, housing, medical care. etc; because it's NOT A LIVING WAGE. Meanwhile every day people cannot buy a home, because they can't save for a down, because of the cost of living AND THE FACT that their RENT is NO DOUBT, almost 50% of their income. So adding insult to injury, the masses are in an ever widening division for BASIC QUALITY IF LIFE.
It used to be DAD could work a REGULAR JOB, raise a family while Mom stayed home and made the family unit a UNIT.....his salary bought food and clothes and a house and a car and a vacation to grandma's EVERY summer! Kids could work to go to school WITHOUT owing TENS of THOUSANDS upon graduation. Mom could take a job here and there for Christmas money or Dad could grab some overtime. THIS WORLD HAS GONE INSANE and it's ten times worse after COVID, which seemed to give every business a reason to take an interest-free and / or a forgiven loan, while recording record profits AND SALARIES FOR MANAGEMENT AND PROFITS FOR SHAREHOLDERS. No one wants to give that up and come back to Earth......It has gotten INSANE.
@@moxievintage1390 I agree with you in general, but don’t understand why you replied to my comment.
In some markets that is not true
Same thing goes for hospitals
In Washington the state owned about half of the dams the majority of the power companies then they sold them to private companies Arista bought Washington water power the other enron that President Bush stopped them from getting into trouble. They jacked the rates to lower consumption to sell more to California stealing our own resources built with state funds !! This is a disopia.
This is the most blatant corruption I’ve seen in a while
Besides Trump wealthy tax break as we speak ugh biggest scam against Americans ever .Bush an 2008 after his trickle down economic plan 😢
We are better off with local energy cooperatives.
If the utility companies are allowed to raise rates there needs to be a mandatory upgrade of the infrastructure

Not true anymore anyone worth a dam would never be able to make it on the ballot. Now you choose the lesser of two evils.
I hope Arizona votes themselves out of this madness. Vote Blue Arizona!
Democrats can be purchased just as easily. Wall Street doesn't see red and blue they see green.
DON'T privatize utility.
Why is it always the Republicans...??
It's mostly because generally speaking Republicans are more concerned about money then they are about the environment
I’m in California, the democrats aren’t any better

Yep (sarcasm) and get rid of your air conditioning! Problem solved!
Noooo they won’t do that because you know, republicans are for the people 😉🙄
Nope. It's both parties. CA and HI have the highest rates in the country.
Why, when the states that have the highest electricity costs are all run by democrats? Do you want more people to struggle?
Arizona is a solid red state, why is this surprising ?
Not anymore.
But..but…but… Trump will save them because he will look out for the little man 😉
CA has the exact same problem. This isn't a partisan issue. It's an unregulated CORPORATION PROBLEM allowed to continue because the utility companies funnel $$$ to whatever politicians will keep them rich.

Here in Arizona we barely have started to put solar power generator cells over the top of the canals. This not only generates electricity, but keeps the water from evaporating. The Middle East has been doing it for decades. One hundred years ago we had more citrus farms and trees and it was much cooler. Now Phoenix is a big sea of cement and blacktop.
The Commission is on the Take

I live in Arizona. This is why I had to double my solar panel power generation capacity. Fortunately I could afford to do that, but I'm still paying on it. We can do better Arizona! Vote for the democratic ticket Harris & Walz blue all the way down 🇺🇸💙!!!
Does the President or democrats determine your electric bill in Arizona?
No way. Kamamly lies and is a drunk
That committee has dark-money contracts to never be allowed to do what arizonans are asking
This is shocking. For the summer I lived in Arizona in 2008, my electric bill was usually less than $50/mo. It was cheaper than the electricity bills with similar conditions near Death Valley.
Now, it's the opposite. This is nuts.

@@Abraham-xi9ep Then they should be fine without AC.
@matt1863
Not a great comeback if you know much about desert civilizations. Part of the problem is that most AZ homes aren’t built in a way that helps them stay cool efficiently. AC isn’t the only solution to being hot, otherwise there wouldn’t be desert cities throughout history.
Republican greed, along with corporate greed. How anybody can vote Republican I’ll never understand.

In Canada, the government owns and controls the utility companies. That would be water & sewer, gas, electricity, garbage pickup. If the PRIVATE EQUITY or privately owned companies own the utilities, they can charge you WHATEVER THEY WANT. Our utilities are very very reasonable. We also have free healthcare which is paid thru our taxes. Greetings from Canada
When the government and the politicians decide that the interests of corporations and the rich 1% are more important than the interests of the millions of average tax-paying citizens, then there needs to be a change.

We've never had a dictator, and the corruption is bi-partisan. We came close, with vax mandates.
The Democrat Party is a party of totalitarian tyrants who endanger their constituents and raid their wallets with huge tax collection schemes to redistribute wealth like communists and you people are proud to be there for them when they are going to literally eat you alive. I happen to live near Chicago, a giant Democrat Party controlled city that controls the whole State of Illinois. I’m 35 miles from this giant fresh water source and have to pay a minimum of $160 per month for two people just to have water. They made my right to install my own water well illegal. People here can’t afford the water or the extremely high property tax, food, insurance and energy bills and it’s all due to this corrupt one Party system.
Same in NY. My power bill is literally almost double what it was just 2 years ago. Politicians pushing EV's and electric heat while approving four rate-hikes a year.
I'm also in NY State. Electric heat was *your* mistake. As disabled seniors our gas bill is paid by the State. That's heat, water heater, stove top & oven. We once had a 10-day blackout in winter, but we were cozy warm using four pots of simmering water on the stovetop. Live with your choice.

Because the duty is not to provide a service for the public good, but to maximize profit by investing the least amount possible while hiking prices up.
Oil is cheaper in real dollars than it was twenty years ago. Solar cells and high efficiency equipment are also cheaper in inflation adjusted dollars. The additionally fees and surcharges combined with per kwh charge are rising much faster than inflation. Where i am in NY the rate is listed as only .16 kwh but the bill represents .30 per kwh if you do the math with fees included.
Arizona: Our politicians are corrupt.
Indiana: Amateurs
a 12% rate increase = a 3x high electric bill?

This is what happens when you live somewhere with regular extreme climate. These deserts are not hospitable for humans to live. Too hot. Too dry. Just move!
I still don’t understand why people move to a uninhabitable desert, but I wish them luck
Because it’s habitable? lol Wanna say the same thing about the Midwest since winters can hit the negatives? I grew up in AZ. Decades ago it wasn’t this bad, and no worse than the cold warnings I experience now up north.
a channel called technology connections made a video recently about the importance of window awnings. they can drastically change how much your house heats up in the summer.
Pick your poison I guess. Hot summers but no snow.
I have Turlock Irrigation District as my power provider, it's much less than PG&E.
I agree, always look at your power costs if you're looking to move

Maybe don't live in a desolate dessert.
