If you drive literally 5 minutes out of Hanley you see two huge retail parks , one mile apart . They have all the usual big names , cinemas , marina , restaurants , hotel , industrial units , water park , free parking and even a dry ski slope . They are packed with people . The areas where they are built are where the old steel works , a deep mine and other old industries used to be . They were transformed over 30 years into the retail parks . Along with the loss of the main industries pottery and mining , plus internet shopping and atrocious council decisions by all parties over decades ... Gives a better overall picture of what is happening to the old towns . The community feel , independent shops , pubs , nightclubs and buzz of the traditional town centre has been replaced with huge corporate retail parks . Very convenient , easy parking but souless with none of the personal community feel of the old towns . The problem they cannot or will not address is what to do with the old town centres. Well I blame the council for pedestrianising everything in Hanley and Newcastle to the point that you can't get anywhere near the town centre, let along park anywhere. Potteries Centre used to be vibrant and while I know the department stores hit hard times, they provided a hub for retail.
Exactly what I was going to comment. It's also worth mentioning, particularly in the Potteries with the pot banks, that the factories that were located in proximity to the towns also fed other businesses. As they closed, other businesses that depended on the trade from the workers were inevitably doomed to follow. Personally, I can't see any possible way the high streets, town centres can return to their former glory. Times have changed and I think no amount of funding would help. The future...? Some of those buildings have been like that since the 90s there's more chance of em falling down than anyone developing them unfortunately at this point they should just give these buildings to anyone who has the time the want and cash to do something with them better than leaving them an eyesore.

I know why don't we just complain about it on TH-cam then complain again and again and again. Complaining dont do shit you need to grow a backbone people and fight for your country and your freedom
The city was deindustrialised.
NCB
Michelin
Pot Banks
Creda
Shelton Bar
And many more
All gone.
Accept that and understand what you see.
No work, no money, no prospects.
it would not be so depressing if it was not all done on purpose wait till the new flats and homes are build not for the homeless people and young adults
Very sad and I see know chance of a come back it's all gone
Flats flats and online delivery all over 🇬🇧. Not much sense of community
A good place to film a apocalyptic movie
the girl with all the Gifts was filmed in hanley bus station with Glen Close it is very good film
Yes it looks like everyone has been abducted by aliens. It's empty and desolate.
Make the empty place available cheaply to creatives and artist and they will renew your cities for the future, they did it before and can again
everythings online
Fucking hell, that is bad.
Did not realise this was happening cause im a southerner.
Governments have a lot to answer for.
This can dramatically be improved...
Have you got a light?
OMG had heard it was bad but didn't know how bad it had become
I lived in Stoke in the 1990s when I worked there as a doctor. Hanley was a thriving town - I used to enjoy weekend trips there for shopping. So sad to see how much it has declined. Looks like a post-apocalyptic dystopia to be honest.
Some of those buildings have been like that since the 90s there's more chance of em falling down than anyone developing them unfortunately at this point they should just give these buildings to anyone who has the time the want and cash to do something with them better than leaving them an eyesore.
It's like taking the walk of shame for people who live here devastating
Former shops may be turned into accomodation whether it's affordable for the majority is another thing Hanley is a disgrace years of neglect
What the hell has happened to Hanley I am utterly shocked it was once a very busy Town, in the 60s it was thriving I definitely will not be asking friends to come over to Stoke on Trent the councils need to listen as the rents for shops are too high and the car parking charges are to high it is slum town now I though Longton was bad but its got nothing on Hanley .
Same as Longton and Meir. The city is a mess and the council don’t care. In fairness, the residents of the city, make it a dump too. The council just let them get on with it. Why should they care when people just ruin everything anyway.
Stoke voted Brexit and then returned Conservative MP's. How dumb.
😢
Yes, Labour would fill all these empty buildings with foreigners. The real problem is the internet has made the brick and mortar businesses obsolete or unprofitable, but you are so blinded by stupid politics you can't or don't want to figure it out.
Fuck all to do with politics. It's companies like Amazon that are killing the high streets and nearly a fiver for a pint? Fuck that, I'll get 4 pint tinnys from bargain booze for 6 quid. Hanley was decaying long before the EU was manufactured
You might have voted for them.i didn't.and certainly not for labour.
@@stevenmoses5807 Desperate people taken in by the lies.
Is this really the UK, or a 3rd world hell hole 😩
Politicians have so much to answer for 😡
Looks like. Blackpool
I've never ever seen this amount of shops buildings in this state 😳 what has been going on !!
Our once great city is only going to get worse now the devil is in number 10
As if the damage hasn't already been done by the previous administration...
SA10
I’ve never seen a place look that dead - I thought this video was taken during lockdown till I checked the upload date . Where are people hiding in that place ? Imagine what it’s like in winter ?
POTTERIES PEOPLE ARE AMONG THE MOST FRIENDLY PEOPLE ON GODS EARTH, THEY SIMPLY DO NOT DESERVE THIS TREATMENT, ITS SO SO SAD AND DESPERATE 😢
Alot of seaside towns are the same across the country need to pump money into them and create jobs for local people
Looks like hardly anyone lives there anymore.......
The UK is extreme debt, it pays 100 billion annually in interest rates, yet continues to giveaway hundreds of billions to other countries by borrowing it, yet it country rots away and welcomes millions more mouths to feed annually 😂
I studied at Keele U in the late 80's. I am shocked to see what happened to Newcastle UL and the regional town areas.
Pathetic excuse for a city n I'm from there it's been run to the ground by the council government etc
The only way it would change is if people threw their phones in the bin ,.and thats not going to happen
I'm afraid it's beyond that now.
Even the crackheads have £1000 phones 😂
Ano coz everything's cheaper online,
Shocking
Looks like gaza
So sad it makes me feel so angry wots happen to are town can it be restored
What would arnold benett make of it all xx
It’s heartbreaking to see my golden country turning into the worlds cesspit
So so sad the state Hanley is in,I we took our car for service the other week and had a walk around, used to love it but now it’s full of dust heads and foreigners ,. Used to take the kids for a walk about but there is no way I’m taking the grandkids
Business 'TO LET' signs? Really? What a joke.
'TOiLET' main st, ample parking.
Soon to be a Islamic town coming soon
exactly, then Rayner is going to build lots of social housing for them as a priority.
Idiotic
This video is not Newcastle-under-Lyme it's Hanley Stoke-on-Trent
At 21:30 onwards it's newcastle under lyme
What a mess they should show them guys crossing the channel this.
Im an ex stokie and this makes me so sad, this is 4th world not 3rd world,it's so shocking.
In the 1970s and 80s things we're better when there was a lot less money about which don't really make sense. Things were cleaner and not as many buildings board up and closed.
I would LOVE to know what the government plans are in Newcastle-under-Lyme that they are INVESTING IN YOUR FUTURE? We have world class universities and a brilliant college nearby with no town centre for students to enjoy. I mean you know a town centre is screwed if the bookies have moved out! The Ironmarket was prime real estate back in the day, it's hard to believe
wtf ghost town
