    If you drive literally 5 minutes out of Hanley you see two huge retail parks , one mile apart . They have all the usual big names , cinemas , marina , restaurants , hotel , industrial units , water park , free parking and even a dry ski slope . They are packed with people . The areas where they are built are where the old steel works , a deep mine and other old industries used to be . They were transformed over 30 years into the retail parks . Along with the loss of the main industries pottery and mining , plus internet shopping and atrocious council decisions by all parties over decades ... Gives a better overall picture of what is happening to the old towns . The community feel , independent shops , pubs , nightclubs and buzz of the traditional town centre has been replaced with huge corporate retail parks . Very convenient , easy parking but souless with none of the personal community feel of the old towns . The problem they cannot or will not address is what to do with the old town centres. Yes there have been promises of redevelopment but the last big scheme ... the developer went bust after everything had been demolished leaving a waste land . I could go on and on about councils decisions and developers but I'd be here for days . Positive note ... the people are proud and amongst the friendliest . They have been let down badly by all political parties .

      Well I blame the council for pedestrianising everything in Hanley and Newcastle to the point that you can't get anywhere near the town centre, let along park anywhere. Potteries Centre used to be vibrant and while I know the department stores hit hard times, they provided a hub for retail.

      Exactly what I was going to comment. It's also worth mentioning, particularly in the Potteries with the pot banks, that the factories that were located in proximity to the towns also fed other businesses. As they closed, other businesses that depended on the trade from the workers were inevitably doomed to follow.
      Personally, I can't see any possible way the high streets, town centres can return to their former glory. Times have changed and I think no amount of funding would help.
      The future...? Your guess is as good as mine but I think wiping it clean and rebuilding with new homes might be the best decision. Rebuilding with expensive quality housing might bring the area up as opposed to remodelling former premises into HMO's or flats then importing immigrants from London to inhabit them.

You can buy fruit in a supermarket so don't need a fruit and vegetables shop you can buy meat in a supermarket so don't need a butchers. The list goes on and on . I was born and raised in Stoke and now live in Newcastle under Lyme…the decline of these areas over the last 20 years or so is staggering. I rarely go into Hanley or Newcastle any more to shop as there are so few shops to shop in. When me and my wife retire in a few years we are moving out of the area to somewhere with a little bit of soul and good vibe. It’s a real shame as the majority of Potteries people are very hard working and extremely friendly.

    Oh my god. THIS (Hanley) 0:46 is the town where I used love to go shopping every Saturday. It was thriving, busy and clean with ZERO boarded up shops. THIS is the town where everyone around used to go out on a weekend to the many clubs, bars and discos. I knew it would start going downhill when the really good big shops started to close. BHS closed down and not many years after M&S and the giant Debenhams. I stopped going to Hanley about 5 years ago because EVERY TIME I came home feeling utterly sad and depressed. Now, it's even worse - much worse.

    It’s been like this for many years. This is what happens when councils want to pay millions for a car park.. in a completely run down city centre. Makes perfect sense for the brown envelope brigade. Also millions on one way systems. It’s a very murky place in the day and at night. Just to think hanley was a vibrant party town about 15/20yrs ago. Lack of funding for these places down to governments building their posh train tracks at extortionate prices. Unwanted carparks and just generally abusing public funds for their own back handers.

    I went to Stoke afew weeks back for a rave at Keele University and apart from the small bit of the town centre in Newcastle Under Lyme everywhere was either boarded up and closed or massively run down -this is happening in every small town by design with no regeneration and as some people have mentioned it definitely has to do with these 15 minute towns/cities!

This may mean the old buildings need to be bought up cheap and pulled down, because they are not suited for the new purpose.

    The first shopping centre in the Newcastle section of the video was recently vacated for redevelopment. It is opposite to the now demolished old town hall. What looks like a new car park is currently being built on the old Sainsbury's site at that end of the town.

    Some of those buildings have been like that since the 90s there's more chance of em falling down than anyone developing them unfortunately at this point they should just give these buildings to anyone who has the time the want and cash to do something with them better than leaving them an eyesore.

    What the hell has happened to Hanley I am utterly shocked it was once a very busy Town, in the 60s it was thriving I definitely will not be asking friends to come over to Stoke on Trent the councils need to listen as the rents for shops are too high and the car parking charges are to high it is slum town now I though Longton was bad but its got nothing on Hanley .

  • @gazmach1685
    @gazmach1685 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Same as Longton and Meir. The city is a mess and the council don’t care. In fairness, the residents of the city, make it a dump too. The council just let them get on with it. Why should they care when people just ruin everything anyway.
