    One of the many things I enjoy about your videos is that you share your philosophy. Some 'teachers' don't say anything and we just watch them paint/collage which is fine. But, you have so many words of wisdom that I often write them down in my art journal called "things I want to remember about making art." Thank you for being such a thoughtful mentor to us!

      Wow, I love this and am so happy you find it helpful. It truly comes from years of struggling with my thoughts about art and creating, and then how I’ve had to learn to think and observe is what got me through it, so I love to share.

    I took a class ten years ago where we used a gelli plate. Thanks to your video, I dug it out and will be using it to make interesting papers even before I take your collage class. Thank you for the inspiration.

    I admire your discipline in being willing to play and experiment, and your commitment to curiosity and "what-if?" Further, your ability to incorporate your experiments into finished works is beyond incredible. Thank you for sharing this part of your process. ♥

      My pleasure, Paul. And I had to teach myself how to relax and be experimental-I kept trying to produce things. But now that I’m ok with exploring, I love it. It made the whole thing fun again 🤗

    I enjoyed the course. The star speckled green gel print probably came from a brand new plate. The stars stop after a few prints as oil disputes. You can sometimes recreate it by conditioning your plate with baby/mineral oil.

    • @marabethquinart
      @marabethquinart  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, someone mentioned that about priming it with oil. The part that I was saying I wanted to duplicate was the layering and also the colors I used-somehow I didn’t retain that info 😆

    Thank you for the video, I had heard of gelli plate but had no idea how they produced artwork or what it can be used for. You have answered all my questions and Im going to get one and experiment and then I really want to do your course so will buy it for myself as a Christmas present. You are a great teacher, Happy Christmas.

    i watched a video of another artist working with the gelli to make some textured collage papers, i like that she doesn’t worry about the leftover paint that gets left on the plate after the papers have been lifted off, and if that transfers to the next paper, it all adds to the effect of the collage, i feel as if the messy type of effect is what the artist unintentionally desires and strives towards in their work. just makes for a more interesting painting, more talking points, idk. i always admire someone’s creativity especially if there’s aspects of it that they never intended on putting on the canvas or the sketch pad, but rather, it landed there by a mere stroke of fate. and how wonderful that can be!
    i’m not an artist, but i’ve suddenly become invested in wanting to take an art class! i live a bit up north from you but would love to sit in on one virtually, if that’s possible.

      Very wonderful observations and I totally resonate with what you described-I have found that I’m very interested in honing my skills and manipulating materials, but also incorporating those accidents or intuitive marks that make it just so interesting. It’s definitely what I strive toward. And as of right now, I haven’t attempted a live virtual class….yet!

    The gel plate is something that's become rapidly central to my creative process in the past six months. I've been so impressed by the versatility of it and am constantly finding new ways to incorporate it into my artistic process. I've made a few prints with it that I kinda consider works of art in and of themselves along with SO many collage papers. Plus, I've been able to use the gel plate to incorporate my photography and photo editing skills more into my collage pieces using the laser print method.
    I also love the fact that you're working fast with it, and it doesn't take long to make something pleasing so when I don't have a lot of time or energy, it's been a great little fun pick me up.
    The only thing that I've noticed has been a bit of a challenge since I got into the gel plate is actually using the paper I'm making in collage because I'm so excited about making paper.

    • @marabethquinart
      @marabethquinart  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I hear all of this-very much the same feelings about the plate. It’s really been a wonderful augmentation to my work and practice, and exploring ways to make prints and also make collage papers seems endlessly fun. Definitely a fun pick me up, as you mentioned, for when I’m having trouble getting into my flow. Thanks for the lovely comment 😊

    The gel prints you show at the beginning, are gorgeous! Several are reminiscent of Monet's "waterlilies" series.As great-great-grandmama Scarlett😉 used to say, "I'm pea green with envy!" The collages are magnificant, as well. Thank you for this video!

      @@marabethquinart I have a feeling we have much in common. I have had several friends over the years who were both gardeners and artists. Actually i approach my gardening as three dimensional art. When people see my landscape and gardens they are not surprised to learn that i am an artist. One of my students was taking a walk through my garden some years back and asked what i loved the most. My reply was gardening because it combined both horticulture and art...the design principles are the same for both. I reviewed your courses and will sign up first for the collage/paper one as it will be a good introduction to you and your basic principles. Then i will move on to the landscape course. I have done a significant amount of collage, abstract/non-objective work in my art career but stepped away from it a few years ago. My stash of papers--both hand dyed/painted and printed materials--is sizable so i have lots to choose from you know one never has enough! Looking forward to your classes and collage once again. Best regards, Susan Edquist, Kernersville NC

    The geli plate is my absolute go to for play and experimentation, especially when I'm not feeling very creative. I've not yet used high flow acrylics so need to try those but have found I love the splash type effects effects I get when using only a little paint with water sprayed from a bottle. I haven't yet allowed mine to completely dry for fear of not getting the delicate papers I use (tissue, wet strength tissue and rice paper) off again, but hey, I'll give it a go. My real problem is then I fall in love with the page and want to use it as a base for my lansdcape rather then tear it up, but I'll get over it! Thanks for sharing. WILL be joining the class soon.

      I totally agree about the gelli plate being a fun creative activity when I’m not feeling like painting! I will have to try using the water bottle-great idea. And I’ve been surprised to see how the tissue paper I’ve used really holds up pretty well. So happy you’ll be joining the class 😊

    This is beautiful.
    Have you tried using Deli paper? It's fabulous because it's thin and slightly translucent, but so much tougher than tissue paper. It really takes a beating and you can pull several layers of dried paint off your plate without it tearing, and it doesn't have the thickness that ordinary paper has.

    • @marabethquinart
      @marabethquinart  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’ve used something similar but not deli paper strictly-I should try it! Can you just find that at the store or do you order it online?

    • @katanyajason3316
      @katanyajason3316 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@marabethquinart I order it online because I can't find it in the UK.
      Maybe a store like Michaels sells it.
      I really love it and use it all the time. I love tissue paper too but you just can't pull a print with it. I've pulled prints that have dried over night on my gel plate with deli paper without any problems. I also like the fact that it doesn't have the thickness of copy paper, nor does it have the bright white edges when you tear it.

    Won’t the heat of a blow dryer damage the gelli plate?

    • @marabethquinart
      @marabethquinart  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Probably, eventually. I do have a button on my dryer that takes the heat away and just blows cool air so I’m sure that helps.
