One of the most heartbreaking scene I have ever seen, gets me every time... Also that kid! Only five years old and still delivers so much pain and desperate love in his acting, woaw, incredible... Thank you Mr Chaplin, you genius.
I love this part. The Tramp is fighting like hell to get his kid back and Jackie is sooo good in this! The way he pleaded "I want my daddy, please!" and with the music, it just breaks your heart. So beautiful.
Charlie is the greatest ,not only the oldest and most popular actor of all time, but traveled the world back in the day just to bring smiles to peoples faces.probably with more airtime than linberg .in my book also one of the greatest humanitarians of the last hundred plus years.
I dont tend to be a pussy whilst watching a movie but my God this one gets me every time so full of feeling. Often modern day comics attempt to make us laugh whilst clumsily delivering a finger wagging lesson on life which they probably don't understand anyway. In my humble opinion Chaplin really could entertain from experience of a very real life and it is no overstatement to say that the man really was an artist in every true sense.
FUCKING AWESOME.....Three images stand out. 1. When The Kid is taken away, the look of abject terror on Charlie's face as he's about to lose the only thing he cares about! STUNNING! 2. When Charlie rescues The Kid on the back of the truck, their reunion is priceless. But what really struck me is right after Charlie is so overjoyed at getting The Kid back, he looks passed the kid at the third bad guy who was driving the truck. IF LOOKS COULD KILL! 3. After Charlie chases the third guy away, he comes back to the truck, helps The Kid down and then rebuttons his coat, regaining his dignity! FUCKING AWESOME!!!
has anybody noticed that charlie was also the greatest stuntman during his time. In almost all his movies he had performed his own stunts, unbelievable for that time. Probably the first ever stuntman.
the animal instinct indeed, Charlie Chaplin is an icon,,,the kid was performed by Jackie Coogan who would play the grandfather role in the Monsters...god bless both of them...
My eyes actually got teary when the little kid begs for Chaplin while his in the back of the car. But at the end there when he runs after the driver I laugh so hard. I love Charlie Chaplin man, the best actor in the world. Apparently he gave a lot of money to Coogan (the kid) in support because Coogans parents took basically all the money he earned and spent it on cars, cloths etc. Thats real friendship right there.
Never was there a more beautiful scene in cinema. I have a huge reprint of the original movie poster up in my living room. I just think Chaplin was the best and The Kid one of his best.
Some author said the funny irony that the most beloved kid would achieve a second fame as the nastiest of old men. This is how special Chaplin's relationship with Jackie was. When Jackie was on hard times, Chaplin loaned him $1,000 without thinking twice. When they met again in 1972, He whispered to Coogan's wife the following words. "you must never forget your husband is a genius."
it's hilarious, touching, violent, sad, great filmmaking....it's got heroes, villains, a happy ending, in three minutes and 40 seconds. If this is this good, the whole movie must be amazing.
I just saw The Kid today in my Film Critique class in school and the first thing i did when i got home was to buy the dvd. This scene is terrbily sad and brilliant. kogglebeer said (below) the most when he called this scene "brutally beautiful." That just about sims it up. Way to go Chaplin and Coogan!!
Wow. Thank you...I was hoping someone would post this scene. It's one of maybe three or four scenes, out of all moviedom, that can choke me up. The music is responsible for a lot of that. Just very beautiful, powerful stuff.
This is such a beautiful film. Chaplin's unwavering perfectionism really pays off in this sequence. I defy anyone not to become emotional whilst viewing this. Long live the little Tramp.
MY Drama teacher showed me this video and we studied Chaplin for quite awhile mostly on how he acted and thow back then the motions were the story. Well he was right. I may be 13 but this movie was probably the best film I have ever watched. He also showed us many more films like "Duck Soup" even though that wasn't a Chaplin. I really love this film. I hate how people in my class were laughing at the part when Chaplin kissed the boy.
Great scene! One of Chaplin's greatest strengths was know how to get the audience to feel what the characters were feeling. With the addition of one of his nicest melodies he achieves something that many filmmakers today should envy. And he did it all himself!!
Damn. That kid, crying for his father, absolutely breaks your heart. What a phenomenal scene! Brilliant! I've never seen The Tramp in such a distressed emotional state. THANK YOU FOR POSTING!
This has gotta be the greatest short film of all time.nasa should have sent this clip into outer-space. in a way this clip would best represent us here on earth.even the most intelligent life out there would say,"this clip is brilliant and those humans are something else"
OMG the music from 1:10 makes me cry so so much :') so moving. Chaplin was such a genius: not only could he make the perfect films, but he possessed an incredible music talent, and wrote such powerful music that even most professional composers cant match.
This is such a heartbreaking and amazing moment...it really captures the story and soul of Charlie's life and work. I never cease with rejoicing tears when watching this!
Amazing movie. By the way, the 'kid' is none other than Jackie Coogan. You may know him in one of his later roles as Uncle Fester on the "Addams Family" TV show.
@csuk73 I absolutely agree. Chaplin achieved something in 3 minutes that most filmmakers can't do with Three hours. I don't care if you're a man or woman, if this scene doesn't choke your heart and make u cry, don't call yourself a human being.
their love will always be last,,, i love when they kissed each other, how much father and son love to be together. it touched my heart and my eyes teared. i love the kid, it inspired my life forever.

When Charlie hugs the kid and a teardrop falls from his eye... oh. that scene.....

Pure geneius! He should be seen a role model to film-makers today. He composed the music as well.
Touching score, incredible acting by both Charlie and Jackie. And...I'm sorry. But the kiss is so touching and adorable.

Not one word of dialogue but it has the power to translate emotinally around the world.
The Kid is actually Jackie Coogan, better known as Uncle Fester on 1960s sitcom The Addams Family. WOW!!!
