The Mafia And A Nigerian Gang Are Targeting Refugees In Sicily (HBO)

  • They’ve fled violence, poverty, and terrorism - and made the often perilous journey across the Mediterranean from Africa and the Middle East. But for the more than 100,000 migrants who’ve arrived in Italy so far this year, the life that awaits them can be almost as dangerous as the one they left behind.
This is particularly true for economic migrants, who don’t have the same legal status as refugees, and aren’t given the same work permits or financial aid to help them survive. Barred from the legal workforce, and with few financial options, many are targeted by criminal gangs - supported by the Italian mafia - and thrust into a life of sex slavery and drug trafficking.
That’s what VICE News discovered after visiting Ballarò, a small market area, and traditional mafia stronghold near Palermo, Sicily, where the infamous Cosa Nostra mafia syndicate continues to wield power.
VICE News went to Sicily, to hear from migrants who’ve been caught in the crosshairs.

Imagine not being allowed to legally get a job or drive. You used to receive 40 dinar per month (until UNHCR ran out of money), but the rent you have to pay is 200. You get exploited by a guy who pays you 150 per month to work 12 hours per day, 7 days per week , and who is the same person who charges you the 200 in rent. You've been on a waiting list for 2 years while the UN "considers your case". Even when the war ends, you can't go home because there are militias who will kidnap and kill you when they find you, just because of your family name. The police catch you working and fine you 300 dinar, but you have to continue in order not to starve. Your kids are not allowed to go to school, so they have no access to education. No organisation, charity or government helps you in any way, because you are not inside a refugee camp.
80-90% of refugees live outside refugee camps in Jordan, and this has been the experience for most refugees there. I can't fault the government, given they've taken in over one million refugees . But don't think there can be any kind of life in neighbouring countries. The line between "real refugee" and economic migrant is blurred in reality because it is their refugee status which excludes them from participation in the economy and society, namely getting a job, and leaves them vulnerable to being exploited.
You don't have to agree with letting refugees into Europe, but at least understand the situation they face before making assumptions.

We need workers? Are you high? We don't have enough jobs for our own citizens, where on earth did you get we need workers? We have barely been in the green in GDP for the past 5 years. This is why you see huge rates of youth emigrating from Italy, its because we have no jobs. If any of you are interested in the sheer magnitude of how many migrants we receive look up "Lampedusa' , every week new boats come in. 845 arrived in 3 days this week, and thats just a tuesday and only 1 Italian island. I understand their plight and am entirely empathetic, the fact of reality is we do not have the jobs or economy for most of these people. If they are looking for El Dorado in Italy they are sadly mistaken.
Also some stupid comment about 'The libtards fault' . Most of these people get deported after a year, especially if there is no evidence they are trying to assimilate (Government offers free italian lessons, cultural customs etc..). They arrive faster than it is feasibly possible for us to deport them.
