Pablo and Josue's "Determinado" won the Djooky Music Awards (Spring 2021), competing against over 2,000 nominees of artists and songwriters from 120+ countries. They had a choice to choose between taking home the $20,000 cash prize or an all-expense-paid trip to LA to record with Brian Malouf, multi-platinum producer who's worked with Queen, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Stevie Wonder, etc. Due to strict travel restrictions, Pablo decided to take the cash prize.

I've tried translating the lyrics to English, maybe this could help a little.
Layunin kong iligtas ang nilalaman ng isipan ko
(I aim to save the contents of my mind)
Sasapat na nga ba’ng lahat ng to kung determinado pero di naman makabasag ng plato?
(Is this all enough to be determined but "can’t even break a plate”/timid?)
Dami nagtatanong ba't ito ang gusto
(Many have asked why I wanted this)
    Tahakin na landas, halika dito
(To walk this path, come here/let me tell you)
Takbo ng utak ko ay malayo sa iyo
(How my mind works is far from yours)
    Maniobra palayo sa kakitirang un
(I’m gonna maneuver myself away from that narrowness)
Kargado't napuno na rin ng galit 'to
(I am armed and filled with anger)
Pero 'di ako magpapalunod sa lait nyo
(But I won’t drown myself from your hate)
Patuloy ang andar kahit pa bali baliko
(I’ll continue on even if crooked...)
Saking dadaanan, sumpang to'y mababali ko
(The path I’ll take, this curse I will break)
    Ano bang sabi ko?
    (What have I said?)
    Determinado, walang makakapigil
(I’m determined, no one can stop me)
    Di terminado aking sentido
    (Not terminated, my senses are)
    Bumabasag ng mga bungo
    (Crushing many skulls)
Eto na’ng huling bersikulong maririnig mo galing sa 'yong berdugo
(This is the last verse you’ll here from your executioner)
Katumbas ako ng dalawa na ipo
(I am like two tornados/I am like two Ippo [Makunochi, a boxer from an Anime])
Bawat suntok ay may bigat na mala hippo
(Every punch/hit weighs like a hippo)
Kahit si aeolus hindi ako mahipo
(Even Aelous [God of wind?] can’t touch me/for me is slow)
Pagnag-dempsey roll bira mo'y sa anino
(When I do the Dempsey Roll [an evasive and attack move of Ippo Makunochi] you’ll hit just my shadow)
Musika lang ang aking bisyo, natatanging ambisyon
(Music is just my vice, my only ambition)
    Kahit anumang opinyon
    (Whatever opinion)
    Hinding hindi malilipol, lahat isasakripisyo
(Will not be exterminated, will sacrifice everything)
Hindi kelangan ng abiso ng kahit na sino
(Don’t need any permit from anyone)
    Heto ng aking pagsibol
    (Here is my bloom/rise)
Layunin kong iligtas ang nilalaman ng isipan ko
(I aim to save the contents of my mind)
Sasapat na nga ba’ng lahat ng 'to kung determinado pero 'di naman makabasag ng plato
(Is this all enough to be determined but “can’t even break a plate”?)
    'Di ako Isang anito
(I am not a [tribal] god)
Akoy di hamak lang nga na isang mortal na bagito
(I am just a humble mortal newbie)
Apoy ko'y immortal 'di gaya sa palito
([But] my fire is immortal not like the matchstick’s)
Nagpapalit 'to ng anyo kapag nakikipagbasag ulo
(I change forms when I battle)
    Mga pabibo panigurado
    (Showoffs are sure...)
Matutusta, t’yak sunog sakin ako ang Prometheus ng musika, tapos ka
(To be toasted, surely burned by me [for] I am the Prometheus of music, you’re finished)
Faya lahat pag lumikha, mainit init pa
(My creations are all fire, it’s still hot)
Kaya sige pabibo pa lemme drop the B.
(So go showoff lemme drop the B.)
Time for me to eat MC.
    Determinado, walang makakapigil
(I’m determined, no one can stop me)
    Di terminado aking sentido
    (Not terminated, my senses are)
    Bumabasag ng mga bungo
    (Crushing many skulls)
Eto na’ng huling bersikulong maririnig mo galing sa 'yong berdugo
(This is the last verse you’ll here from your executioner)
Balisa, ‘lang humpay sa paghuhukay ng mga tula
(Restless, continually digging for more poems)
Sa bahay ng saysay parang tarantulang nalulumbay
(In this house of talking [not sure what you call a rap battle venue], I’m like a longing tarantula)
Kahihintay sa pusang galang magtatangkang hamakin ang aking buhay
(Waiting for someone dumb enough to try to belittle my life)
Di mo maidedeny aking taglay kahit pa umabot ang paglakad ko'y pasuray suray
(You cannot deny what I have, even if my gait stumbles and staggers)
Habang buhay maglalakbay patungo sa aking pangarap na kailan pa man ay di mamamatay
(Until I’m alive I’ll continue on towards my dream that won’t ever die)
Di mamamatay, laging nananalaytay ang enerhiyang aking ibibigay
(It’ll never die, it’ll always flow with energy that I give)
Baybay lang ang kayang silayan kung ang puso at utak ay 'di magkaugnay
(You will just see the shore OR You can only spell [and not make bars], if your heart and mind are not connected)
Di ko kelangan ng lamay, akin na nga yang tinapay
(I don’t need a funeral, let me have that bread)
Tigilan mong kakahukay, lumayas ka saking bahay
(Stop that digging, get out of my house)
Kung isip ko ay 'di rin tunay, walang saysay magbigay pugay
(If what’s in my mind are not true, there’s no value in accolades/salute)
Matagal na 'kong patay kung 'di lang Determinado
(I am already long dead if I was not determined)
    Ako ay Determinado
    (I am determined)
    Isip ko'y determinado
    (My mind’s determined)
    Determinado
    (Determined)
    Ako ang 'yong berdugo
    (I am your executioner)
Layunin kong iligtas ang nilalaman ng isipan ko
(I aim to save the contents of my mind)
Sasapat na nga ba’ng lahat ng to kung determinado pero 'di naman makabasag ng plato
(Is this all enough to be determined but "can’t even break a plate”?)

For me, the aggressiveness comes from the meaning of the song because it is about questioning how determined someone is and what do they need aside from determination itself. In the first part of the song it is said that "Is it enough that you're determined if you can't even break a plate". If you'll think about it they have a point, people often have the passion in themselves. They have the fire but is it enough? Don't you think you need more than just a fire? Don't you think you need fuel to make it bigger? It is about the actions and choices that you'll take to make that passion into something else. Making that dream into reality. The aggression gives emphasis to what the song really aims to convey to the listeners and it is really effective because even if you cannot understand the lyrics, you can feel the eagerness that they have. 🔥🔥🤘🏾🤧

You should check out the visualizer which Pablo just published a couple of days ago- you'd get a better understanding of the lyrics bc there's captions - no breaking plates now. And there's a live performance of this song during the APAC Predator League held yesterday. You'd find it interesting - he's going for real-est live (just something I noticed only because of your comment about mic splitting on SB19 AAA performance), Jay Durias on keyboards, remix on the Determinado part (whole performance is for 3 songs btw). There's a part of the song he struggles with vocally but I still think it's fire. If he continues this route for the rest of the year, this will be the year of "El Pablito Salvaje/ Pablo, the Savage" aka Pablo of the Magical Hair Clips

Can’t even break a plate (Di makabasag pinggan) is a Filipino saying that describes someone who’s very demure & proper.
It’s like they’re saying.. you’re determined but you can’t even get your hands dirty? That’s not going to work.

Wale and Efra, again, thank you for always supporting our boys. Pablo and Josue's style of making lyrics here is pure genius. Each verse, they used words metaphorically and has deeper meaning and not just what the direct English translation says. You really have to think deeper/harder what they are trying to convey. Like, the translation in the lyrics where they talk about the plate, I believe it's the direct translation of it, but knowing Pablo, where he often uses words metaphorically, the lines where they said "is this all enough, if you're determined but can't even break a plate" has deeper meaning. My interpretation of that line is that - You can't just say you're determined if you are not willing to do anything and everything in your power to really show how determined you are. Maybe other fans has their interpretation of that line, but that's my own interpretation.

I believe the proper translation for the bridge is
"I am determined, no one can stop me.
Not terminated, my senses break skulls..."
    Because it was written as:
    Determinado, Walang makakapigil
Di terminado, aking sentido bumabasag ng mga bungo...

Hi Waleska & Efra, here are the etymologies of words that are metaphorical or figurative in nature. Because these brothers do not use vulgar or derogatory words, they' would usually use metapors or figures of speech instead.
    1. Di makabasag ng Pinggan/Plato (Plate Reference: Literal English translation - cannot even break a plate) - commonly referred to bashful, timid, modest, Silent-type, faint -hearted, coward, weakling, pushover, snowflake (derogatory) and so on...
    2. Pusang gala (cat reference: Literal English translation - loitering Cat) - it is an interjection, euphemistic & vulgar at the same time.
    3. sentido bumabasag ng mga bungo - (Literal English translation - Sense as in common sense or sentido kumon than can break skulls) refers to an intelligent/smart mind
Words that are double/triple entendre in Tagalog:
    Josue's verse:
katumbas ako ng dalawa na ipo (Equivalent to 2 "Ipo")
"Ipo" Filipino word means cyclone; tornado; whirlwind. 2 Ipo or Ipu-ipo means twin cyclone; tornado; whirlwind
"Ipo" refers to Anime' character Hajime no Ippo, boxing-themed manga series adopted into anime
bawat suntok ay may bigat na mala hippo (Every punch is like "hippo")
    "hippo" as in Hippopotamus
"hippo" or tagalog word hipo means touch
    Other Terms: Wind References
Aeolus - Greek Mythology, the divine keeper of the winds and king
Dempsey roll - is a technique used by Makunouchi Ippo
Pablo's verse: Word-plays - this is his forte. All SB19 songs are full of word-plays esp. the titles. The gist is whatever you can come up with the words, probably all of it are correct. It's entirely your own process of deciphering the words he created. Short of saying, he would like you to think harder and not just hand you simple sentences that are kinda boring.
Di ako isang anito (I am not a diety)
Ako'y di hamak lang na isang "mortal" nga na "bagito" (I am not just a humble/lowly/novice human being who is a rookie/neophyte)
"mortal" - means perishable earthly, transient temporary it also means fatal, causing or liable to cause death
"bagito" - in tagalog it literally meansTeenager but figuratively it means push-over, person very easy to beat, fledgling
Apoy ko'y "imortal", di halintulad sa "Palito" (My fire is immortal, cannot be compared to a "Palito")
"Nagpapalit 'to" ng anyo 'pag nakipag "basag-ulo" (It changes it's form if in a brawl) form/stance automatically changes when performing
"Palito" - toothpick matches (as in to create a fire)
"Palito" A Filipino slapstick comedian he is very thin and frail hence the name
"Nagpa[palit 'to]" Palit 'to - word play for Palito
    "Imortal" - undying, everlasting, eternal
"Basag-Ulo" Literal Meaning - breaking up of heads Objective: brawl; altercation; scuffle
Hence "Basag-Ulo" is similar or equal to bumabasag ng mga bungo. While "Basag-ulo" means physical fight, "bumabasag ng mga bungo" - means word fight, debate, Rap (Bars)
Matutusta, tyak sunog sakin ako ang "Prometheus ng musika", tapos ka (You're toasted, I am the Prometheus of music beware) Really means that he is musically gifted. He creates masterpiece for humankind; His music is universal example MaPa, everyone in the world can relate to this song
"faya" lahat pag lumikha, mainit init pa, (Fire everything if created is warm)
    "Faya" slang for fire
"Faya" Kaya - he intentionally used faya for kaya to rhyme with mainit init (slightly hot/lukewarm. oftentimes we used to describe a fresh, recent, brand new product) Really means their brand of music is fresh, brand new, relevant. Kind of paying homage to SB19' preferred meaning of SB, Sound Break, they have a new sound and they intend to break that stereotyped Pinoy sound which is Birit or Divas. And they're doing it now, they are self-producing musical genius. Before only a handful is doing it, now it's a revolution of OPM. Young pinoys are producing their own sound in any genres. SB19 is doing it in PPop Mori is now doing it as well, Zack T & Arthur N in RnB, Skusta Clee, Ben&Ben, The Juans, Moira D., KZ T., Julie Anne S and more... Need I include EZ Mil? His formative years started here. The Philippines setting developed his mind to what it is today same with the rest of the artists we have now and they are of the same age bracket. OPM is rising indeed!
kaya sige "pabibo" pa "lemme drop the B". (therefore go show-off lemme drop the B)
Time for me to Eat MC
"B" could stand for Bar or Beat
"MC" Emcee is the master of ceremonies
"MC" could also short for Mic, because he intends to be heard
"MC" may also mean Main Character they are the star here get out
    Both Josue and Pablo's line:
    Determinado, (determined)
    Walang makakapigil (Unstoppable)
    Di terminado (Incomplete)
    Determinado and Di Terminado wordplay
Means: They are determined but they will not stop there
My Fave part of the song:
Josue: Di mamatay, laging mananalaytay ang enerhiyang aking ibibigay (Immortal, my energy will always flow) Mean: My music is undying
Pablo: baybay lang kayang silayan 'pag ang puso't utak ay hindi magkaugnay (I can only see the shorelines if my heart and mind is disconnected)
"Baybay" means shoreline. Famous visual depiction of shorelines or by the beach are sunsets and sunrises... Or in this case, dreams
"Babayin" from the word baybay is an old writing system in the Philippines, it means spelling
Josue: Di ko kailangan ng "lamay", (I don't need patronage)
    "Lamay" funeral wake, vigil.
Pablo: akin na nga yang tinapay (Give me that bread)
Josue: Tigilan mo'ng kakahukay, (Stop digging)
Pablo: lumayas ka saking bahay (Get out of my house)
Josue: Kung isip ko'y di rin tunay, (If I'm not true to myself)
Pablo: 'lang saysay magbigay pugay (No point to salute)
Both: Matagal na 'kong patay kung di lang determinado (I would've been dead for a long time if I'm not determined)
Word play: Dead (Patay) & Lamay (Funeral wake) Well, Pablo is a poet both of them might as well be!!

My take on this verse is: My music is my own. It is my life-force and it will live forever. If I'm half-hearted about fulfilling that dream, I will never succeed. This lamay reference means the big company labels who're just there for the profit. Stop right there, I will not let you decide or manage my dreams for me. I want creative freedom (symbolizing the bread?) I don't need your support or admiration if I can't do the things I want to do.
    Other Terms: Fire References
Anito - refers to ancestor spirits, nature spirits, and deities in the indigenous Philippine folk religions from the precolonial age to the present
Prometheus -a Titan who is chained and tortured by Zeus for stealing fire from heaven and giving it to humankind.
Last Note: Sun & Moon Reference (Graphics) Sol and Luna
Based on the placement of their names, Pablo is the moon and Josue is the sun? Pablo in one of his interviews before, referenced the moon as it (moon) doesn't emit natural light. It just barrows from the sun and still it does it's job very well. Could it be that he feels like he's not as good as Josue and that he is learning from him and not the other way around? Though Josue is very skilled (self-taught) While Pablo trained for 3 years. But through that training, it made him a well-rounded artist. While Josue is a producer, he produced Felip's Palayo BTW and Pablo is still learning to produce (EDM)

Thanks for this! This song sure is 🔥. The Nase family is truly talented it's so unfair haha. Josue's so underrated, too. His songs are sooo good. I hope he gets to be successful, too like Pablo. I don't think this song could be translated in English accurately. There's just a lot of double-meanings, and idioms in every line that it'd be too difficult to get the whole message across in another language.

They were not invited because they don't have a strong connection's from that given big entertainment company. Kung pagiging deserving lang paguusapan SB19 dapat nandun kaso wala eh may nakalagay na sa slot sana nila haha.

@@ryangarcia6250 well, for me it doesn't matter naman eh. Kaya nga wala din akong paki kung di sila inimbita kasi di naman nila kawalan. Besides, di naman sila under ng network na yun so why bother to expect something from them, diba? Let's just ignore them. That's how competition works.

PABLO has so many unreleased song like that 2 songs. The other is the one you react the last time. LA LUNA is also Pablo's old song he composed before SB19. KUMUNOY and KAILAN and the ??? are some of his songs not yet released. Please checked that out, especially KUMUNOY(QUICKSAND) I like that one, because in my darkest day I can really relate to that one. The lyrics maybe dark but that's what make it especial and how the people relate to it.

*Anito* , as as refered to in your translation as "statues" , are _spirits that come from the earth_ according to our animistic culture in the northern mountains of PH. They are both benevolent and malevolent, guardians of nature, and are respected as part of Nature. They are typically depicted in statues as humanoids in a siting position with arms on their knees, probably why "anito" was translated as "statue".
However, in the song, it was used as a comparison to being a mortal, hence, "I am not an anito, just a mortal" (I am not someone/something special, I am just like you).

READ FOR THE GENERAL INTERPRETATION THAT WAS LOST IN TRANSLATION. In general, the song is about the infamous Artist's Conundrum. Those Gregorian Chant lines go:
*"Layunin kong iligtas ang nilalaman ng isipan ko."*
Eng: "I wish to save/salvage my thoughts (lit: 'the contents of my mind')."
This is about keeping one's sanity. In the context of the song, that would mean keeping oneself sane by not being affected by others' opinions.
*"Sasapat na nga ba ang lahat ng ito kung determinado nga pero di naman makabasag ng plato."*
Eng: "Will it even be enough to be determined when one cannot even dare break a plate?"
The last part is a Filipino idiom; "can't dare break a plate (or anything glass)" refers to someone timid, or cautious. A close English equivalent would be "walking on eggshells" except this is more of a personality/tendency/trait of a person rather than a cautious response to an event. Being timid, in this case, acts as a limitation, preventing one to do everything necessary to get to one's goal.
The whole phrase is basically a rhetorical question: For someone "determined", do I even have the luxury to be cautious/limited just because of somebody else's opinion?
Connecting back to the 1st line, "I wish to save my thoughts (from harm)," meaning they don't want to /they don't have the luxury to entertain the unnecessary thoughts that cause them to be timid/cautious despite being determined to chase after their dream. These 2 lines summarize the whole song.
So yeah, basically it's just a big "FU, IDC" to what others say about them so long as they're going about their own business. It's the conundrum every ARTIST faces in their line of work, in one form or another.
See? Those two lines are so simple in Tagalog but it takes several paragraphs for me to explain its context and translation.
Yeah, this beat and song fits Tagalog and native Filipino languages. Mainly because our syllables are consistent and concise and yet it's not too hard and has melodic flow so it really feels satisfying to hear in rap beats.
The lyrics in this song in particular is quite poetic and reminiscent of the FlipTop battles famous here in PH. It might not sound spectacular in English, but that's because the nuances and hidden connotations get lost in translation.
