Whenever someone gives specific attention to Vincent's infamous "just a joke" dialogue, I feel a wondrous global harmony among all the fans of SH3, to think every single one of us felt almost exactly the same when we heard that dialogue the first time in our life, what a moment it was to cherish on! What a masterful writing SH3 had!
The "It's just a joke!" comes directly from Silent HIll 2, right before the first part of Eddie's boss fight, before entering the cold storage room. Personally, I found Silent Hill 3 to be heavily derivative from the first two games.
@@lastyou I understand what you mean, its just they went full on raw fear in SH3 and cranked it up high from start to finish, that's why those few psychological slaps hit too hard. SH 2 had multiple stories from people you share the town with, SH1 also had some in a way, but 3 is strictly Heather's journey. Then it came back again in SH 4 and 5. Downpour just took the Telltale route.
My guess is he's playing on an emulator with graphical upgrades turned on as I can tell you now it does not look like that on ps2 as I have both 2 and 3 on my ps2 and I played it not long ago for the upteenth time
Little fun fact that everyone probably already knows, but the wheelchair at the end off the hall after meeting Vincent was a little reference to the film Session 9. Team Silent's love for the Horror genre really shows and little homages they throw in are great
Silent Hill 3 is my favorite out of the franchise. Although, I do like 1 & 2. That ending, when Heather cries after defeating the boss, and that Akira Yamaoka music plays is so emotional.
Silent Hill 3 captured a really special time for me. When it was released, I just graduated high school at 17, and as a girl, it was carthartic to play the only realistic teenage character in video games back then. Will the world ever see an average girl with bad skin and awkward fashion as a main character in a video game, who isn't sexualized, but realistically on edge and anxious to be put in harm's way? Not likely. SH3 filled a void I didn’t even know existed. I will always treasure my copy. ❤
You're acting like the entire genre of "lesbian self insert simulator" hasn't existed for the last decade(and this game really wasn't the first ti fit these criteria) Question: What's actually stopping you from making this perfect video game yourself, hmm? What's holding you back Edit: Don't forget games that have create a character too. YOU chose what character was in all those games. Why didn't you make it a totally awkward adorkable teenager with visible acne?
God I love this game so much. Not only was it the sequel I wanted after playing SH1, it was also much scarier than its predecessors. Sure the first two games scared the shit out of me, but this one had something else that simply messed with my head really bad. It didn't help that I first played this as a teenager (even as a dude it messed me up) of course lmao. Also, I agree with the comments on Heather's VA. She absolutely killed it with her role; she made the character feel much more alive and believable, especially when Heather showed her emotions. It's a shame they had to redub the game for the HD Collection.
@hitemhard8207 I don’t want to say silent hill 2 was a let down for me or anything, but I was so hyped for it before release because I was a big fan of the first but it was just so different…which was disappointing considering how amazing and unique the first one was and I, along with many other fans, wanted the story of the first to continue. I’ve grown to absolutely love the SH2 now. I love the first 3 and all the differences they bring. What a talented team they had creating these masterpieces!
I played this so much I started having frightening nightmares that really fucked me up had to put the games down. I just recently started the she remake but it's not as good as the originals.
I really liked your description of Heather's development. It takes her the entire game to process the loss of her dad, and for a lot of kids/teens it does take a while to process loss. I thought it was such a small detail but done so extremely well
The lighting effects look better than a lot of games today. I really miss character interactions. It brings out details that graphics alone cannot show. Devs today miss out by not using it in games. Where it is used, the text is very brief and dry Team Silent understood the text gives us valuable context about the world and protagonist. Unlike cutscenes the interaction text is optional and rewards players for seeking it out - depending their immersion in the process
I absolutely love how this franchise hasn’t died and we fans are still here remembering. Hopefully Silent hill 2 remake will revive the series but I would love to see more of you and ur gameplay of the remake! You just earned a new subscriber
SH3 is one of my favorite games ever, i played it over and over again in my PS4 and 360. Heather Mason is one of my favorite characters ever, i lover her so much, her voice actress gave such a wonderful performance, terrific work.
I am guessing you played the shitty HD Collection ... Do yourself a favor and get the PS2 originals and play these games as intended. Either on OG PS2 or on an PC emulator.
I Love this Game SO much! The first three -and even 4 for the most part- are just such incredible Games all around. Still having a deep Impact of my emotions today, when i See or hear something from the Games. I wished nowadays Games with that deepth and soul would be developed again. 😭
This game was big for me growing up. The soundtrack for this one too was one of the best; it's probably my favorite videogame ost. I made a mix to commemorate the 20th anniversary
@SilentHillside it's amazing! I had never thought about the birthday calls being representative of an identity crisis. I want to dust off my copy of sh3 note!
I want a final fantasy style remake where you get a chance to avert Harry's fate, lol. It probably breaks everything but I want Harry to make it somehow, even if it's ridiculously hard to pull off!
I'd say the inclusion of female socialized fear symbols and Heather herself definitely drew women to the franchise. Before SH3 I'd only played Diablo, Age of Mythology, Majesty and Impossible Creatures, all left on the computer I'd gotten as a hand me down since my cousins were getting new desktops -- I wasn't into games -- I'd never been given the chance to be because my male family members shut me out of that hobby. But when my cousins got SH3 as a gift they didn't want to play something with a girl on the cover, so I had the chance to play it without them hogging the PlayStation. I never would have touched it if Heather wasn't on the cover, not only because of my cousins' rejection of her image; I was drawn to her because I was in her age group and I was curious what a horror game featuring a female mc would have to say. I finished it because it spoke to me from the get-go, Douglas' intro scene spooked the hell out of me, being followed by a strange older man was relatable as a mallrat who'd duck into changing rooms to shake creeps off. Being a teenage girl is scary -- you're suddenly seen as an option for adult men, you can get pregnant and have a reminder of that fact every month, people expect you to be more grown up than your male peers, you're fed the fear of night time, alleys, men, strangers, cars slowing down next to you, you get a can of pepper spray, a tazer or pocket knife for christmas lol, etc. I've played every inch of the SH franchise since, save for the arcade game. I hold my fists only run of Origins, and my husbando Travis close to my heart lol.
Haunting Ground? Fatal Frame? Clock Tower? Resident evil 2? Parasite Eve? Those are all horror games that had female protagonist, and featured females on the cover. So this whole video message is pointless.
I was that weird kid that wasn't turned off by ladies on the cover or bad reviews, but I did have the issue if siblings who didn't want to share. I had to wait for them to get disinterested too before I had my chance and just like you I learned a lot and was able to see myself in many of the characters I played as too. The themes of identity and response to fear are very important to me as well, coming from an abusive home these elements of the game had a lot to teach me. I'm glad we both learned something from these games though and I hope things are better for you now. I am sorry that your family members and by extension society hasn't been super welcoming to you. But hearing you story sounded to me like you have become strong and have had the opportunity to make memories with games just like I have. Thanks for talking about your experiences tho and I hope more ppl read it and realize that by being inclusive we all could have been geeking out together about our favorite stories and characters.
@@sunderland69 yes, but as a case for haunting ground: it was a commercial flop when it came out. no one at the time of it's release wanted to buy it, only gaining popularity when stories about femininity started to become more popular in the gaming scene. cant tell much about the other games but i do know that haunting ground was a sleeper hit, initially not being popular enough to have enough copies of it on shelves. so i think that op's message still holds true to some merit.

I have huge love for all the Team Silent titles, there’s something on each that keeps me coming back again and again. But SH3 has been the one I have replayed the most. I can agree with many of the points people make as to why SH2 may be best as a whole package, but it is 3 that truly resonates the best with me. Also, I do find it to be the scariest in the series. It took everything the first one did and amped it up with the PS2’s hardware to create the perfect living nightmare.
Thank you to this game in particular for shaping my literal worst nightmares for decades and completely desensitizing me to all but the most intense and visceral psychological horror. Funnily enough only after finally replaying it properly with an HD mod, have I stopped having occasional nightmares mirroring the aesthetics of this game. I guess I faced my fears. 😅
I’ll never forget the puzzles which were both hard and amazing and I’ll never forget the creep who leaves notes at every turn because he’s obsessed with heather. The other characters like the detective, Vincent and Leonard had interesting backstory. My only problem with this game were the poorly designed enemies like the one called numb body and some boss characters too.
Well done for reading so good. Also I used to think very little of this entry but over time it has grown on me. Even coming in as my second fave in the franchise. Wonderful breakdown though. Well done
Great analysis video. SH3 is my favorite in th e series and my 2nd favorite horror game of all time. Its the only horror game to still give me chills after dozens of replays. Its so unsettling and the game never gives you room to breathe the horror is suffocating. Which is typically a bad choice for any horror game but it works here. Hea-ver, as you call her, which i love btw im not making fun of your accent i promise, is such a relateable character and also my favorite protag of all time. Super relatable, acts how one would when put into a world like this. Her quips are just to help her cope so i dont think theyre out of place. Not any more than any RE character. The level design is so creepy espcially the later half. The hospital, while reused from SH2 is much more gruesome looking this time around and is just terrifying. This game is the best and i love there is a new analysis video that is good as all the othe SH3 analysis videos ive already watched and they are years old at this point. Thanks for covering this. I wish the og game was ported onto modern consoles. Not the shitty HD version. But alas
I noticed that SH3's (2003) Heather and RE4's (2005) Ashley practically share a color scheme aside from Heather's white vest. I wonder if there is any connection from the design/marketing perspective as in "a similar color palette already appeared on a young woman in a successful horror video game" type of inspiration 🤔
I always hated this. I feel like older time Japanese video games creators don't give variety to American characters. They're always blonde, Leon Kennedy and James Sunderland having the same hair style and everything.
I never realized I needed someone to geek out about the UI between the games and have a weapons exhibition with comparative effectiveness....but damn that was satisfying in a way I never thought possible. 😊 Well done on the alt costumes. I wish we had those kind of unlockables for horror games these days too. Fun fact for those who didn't know: the music video for You're Not Here also appeared in Dance Dance Revolution. It's one of a few made for Silent Hill. Your Rain Rage Mix is another one. There's yet another with the song Higher and dancing Robbies, but I'll admit I'm not sure if it's an official music video. Not to be confused with Silent Hills in DDRMax, which is a Christmas song.
I always thought it was a missed opportunity to have a bonus playthrough in the game where you play as Douglas kinda similar to how they did restless dreams in sh2.
I played the first three SH games last month, and while I appreciated all of them, I have a sweet spot for SH1 and SH3. I prefered the more visceral atmosphere of those games to the depressing tone of SH2
subscribed just cuz u typed in subscribe pls in the extra costumes menu and I appreciated the creativity lol. just a reminder that you never know who might appreciate those little things! keep it up!
I love SH3. It always had my favorite feel of the whole series and monster designs. Not too long ago, I went back and played it again with the HD collection on the PS3. I did this because I desperately wanted the games platinum trophy, some kind of badge to show how much I love the game. I did get that platinum trophy not long after. Coincidentally, I got the platinum the night after Halloween. Even with all the things the HD collection messed up regarding SH3, I still enjoyed my time with it. The original game's themes, visuals, disturbing moments, everything about the game has gotten me hooked since I first played it. Getting the platinum trophy on the HD collection also got me to appreciate what the original managed to do even more. If the SH2 remake is a success, I hope they remake the first then the third. Or at least port the game to newer gen consoles, I feel more people should experience this game. It has stuck with me for so long, I don't think it'll ever leave my mind. Also, you did an amazing job on this video, so well edited and paced.
Everyone applauds Silent Hill 2 (and in all honesty it’s well deserved) but Silent Hill 3 is it’s own masterpiece. The was my first SH game and the graphics, creepy scenery and set design are absolutely marvelous
30:16 Something about this part is really un nerving I think the skirt as a design choice really emphasizes this more so, it could be nothing but it's the power of suggestive imagery
I remember walking in a gamestop in 2003 and being shocked that there was a 3rd game this was before I really used the internet much so didn't know about it but beat sh2 several times...a time when I liked those tense scares now I get stressed out and turn the game off lol

That soundtrack section. OMG. XD Brilliant. A+. 10/10. Would watch an entire video of that. ❤❤❤
A great essay, very professional! Keep it up!
Another retrospective for sh3. Love it.
Got u fam, here's a subscribe, thanks for those wonderful music covers
This game as aged like wine. Everything about this game holds up beautifully.

Thank you so much for this, my favorite game of all time and Heather my favorite protagonist of all time! 🥰
You're welcome. I'm glad you enjoyed :)
Gah this channel is so good.
It’s so nice to get solid, entertaining, interesting long form content. ❤
Your remix of the OS killed mee!!!! Subbed.
couldn't tell the difference between the covers and your beatbox, 11/10
I never realized I needed someone to geek out about the UI between the games and have a weapons exhibition with comparative effectiveness....but damn that was satisfying in a way I never thought possible. 😊
Well done on the alt costumes.
Well done for reading so good!!!
Well done for reading so good. I would really appreciate it.
I always thought it was a missed opportunity to have a bonus playthrough in the game where you play as Douglas kinda similar to how they did restless dreams in sh2.
Well done for reading so good - I really appreciate it
I love the OST covers ❤
Well done for reading so good. I really appreciate it.
I played the first three SH games last month, and while I appreciated all of them, I have a sweet spot for SH1 and SH3.
I prefered the more visceral atmosphere of those games to the depressing tone of SH2
Always loved how they used the notepads Harry used to save in sh1 as notes in 3.
58:36 Solid cover 👌 😆
subscribed just cuz u typed in subscribe pls in the extra costumes menu and I appreciated the creativity lol. just a reminder that you never know who might appreciate those little things! keep it up!
Back in the day when there were unlock codes in magazines. SH2 and SH3 are still in the tie for my favorites. ❤
loved this game and loved the video ty

don't be afraid, release the whole song
Well done for reading so good \o/
I want a version of the game with YOUR versions of the music🥰
The was my first SH game and the graphics, creepy scenery and set design are absolutely marvelous
excellent retrospective

Something about this part is really un nerving
I think the skirt as a design choice really emphasizes this
more so, it could be nothing but it's the power of suggestive imagery
Good video my man
Great video 👏
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
By far my favorite SH. This and Fatal Frame 2 to this day are the only two games that truly scared me.
Well done for reading so good!
It's my personal favorite out of the series to this day the visuals are still stunning and unique out of any other horror game.
I remember walking in a gamestop in 2003 and being shocked that there was a 3rd game this was before I really used the internet much so didn't know about it but beat sh2 several times...a time when I liked those tense scares now I get stressed out and turn the game off lol
Those covers were amazing!!😂
well done for reading so good 😍
jokes aside, I really enjoyed the video and you've gained a new subscriber! keep up the great work!
I don't think teens in my country could relate to Heather. My favorite SH game. Great video.
Sweet! Something new to listen to while walking these hot 🔥 streets delivering mail.
Yes that was me in downpour🤷🏾😂
...I've been looking for you since downpour! 😉
I hope you enjoyed this one.
@@SilentHillside thanks for the video. I'm at the part right now where your speaking on the guns.✌🏾
I literally listened to Silent Hill 3's ost yesterday - it really is incredible.
a masterpiece of a retrospective.
Amazing video.
you are helping keep the sprit of the classic art of SH alive and well.
Your weapons list is awesome. Id love to see it for the Resident Evil games.
Thanks! I will make videos on other series in future for sure :)
Thank you for this
Well done for reading so good!
