As a 28 yr old cop in Sunderland 1990 i went see an old couple who had their shed broken into. Over tea in their living room i remarked on a spitfire picture over the fire. "that was my plane in the war" he said. His wife was standing behind him and nodded smiling. I felt like saluting him because to my generation they were our heros. Ill never forget that day.

I rented a room above a flower shop in 1989. I saw a pic of a Spitfire on the wall and yes, the flowershop owner had been a Spitfire pilot.

Even adapted to being a 2-seater, this the most beautiful, elegant, sexy airplane of all time. As a kid, I lived next to Spitfire repair facility in Oxford and spent hours with my nose though the fence. It was my dream to grow up and fly one but that was never to be. Probably a good thing.

Pete taking control was a lovely moment. I'd love the chance to fly in a Spitfire, but he earned his place in that aeroplane and deserved every moment of that flight. I can't imagine that as a grandparent or great grandparent, as he must be now, that I will ever have anything like his story to tell. God bless him and all those who flew for the RAF through the war.

i actually got a shiver down my spine while he was flying.. what a great man he is o7 and amazing work on those pilots for giving these guys a chance to fly again in such a beloved machine by these men, they flew them to hell and the planes brought them back.. thats a bond you cant get elsewhere.. ask them about the plane they flew and every man will tell you its the greatest plane there is.. my grandfather included, for him it was the T-6 Texan, he flew it over Guinea-Bissau in our Colonial War at age 17-21..

I knew an WW2 Spitfire pilot, he was a friend of my fathers. As I have been interested in the second world war I loved talking to him. On a few occasions I managed to get him to talk about his flying and fighting, dogfights and shooting down the enemy. He admitted to a few kills but then said something that surprised me "I still have to meet my maker". It would have been the early 1980s and he still had thoughts of the lives he had taken in war. He was such a nice guy to have known, we cannot begin to understand what these men and woman went through.

Pete Brothers and Bob Doe have become my hero's. Both strike me as pure English gentlemen. Years ago I had the good fortune to meet a Hurricane pilot who had to bale out of his burning machine. He rarely talked about it but was proud to say....'I'm the only one here with a certificate that says I'm sane!' Another gentleman.

Respect to Pete Brothers! I wish my Grandfather had a chance to experience this. He flew Mk. IX and Mk. XVs for the RAF from mid 44 onwards, in 308 and 302 (Polish) squadrons. He was - and still is - my absolute hero and it makes me so sad that he had such a hard life after the war, being prosecuted by communists for coming back to Poland from the UK... You see, you had your freedom,, but my Granddad came back to an enslaved country and didn't live long enough to see the Russians leave in 1989.

That confirm the "special" relationship the fighter pilots had, with lots of respect for the enemy. I remember reading Roal Dahl's memories as a fighter pilot, they targetted the machines, not the men. Some kind of "knights of the sky". Well, war is always horrible and sad, but such fights are still less horrible than terrorism or genocides. Greetings to your grandpa !

I have to say that having flown Buccaneers and F4's I am still in awe of those guys - little more than schoolkids - who took on odds of 4 and 5 to one all those years ago and held their own.
Okay, seaborne ops were always gonna be more hairy by their very nature, but the pressure on these fellers must have been extreme, no matter who they were or where they came from.
    We owe them!
    JB.

It pulls up all of my pilot emotions to the extent that I just may go and take that check ride and get back in the game again!
Many thanks for the video - excellent!
