      There are many people who want to know the WHY behind making your own products at home because it's easier to buy them in the stores. If I left out the explanation on the toxins found in store-bought dish washing soaps, others would be upset that there wasn't enough information. So this way, all types of people can be helped! :)

    Mine didn't thicken after using organic vegetable glycerin in place of the kosher salt I didn't have on hand. Still without the kosher salt, I used my pink Himalayan salt and it worked like a charm. In fact, it began thickening immediately. I LOVE it! Thanks so much for the recipe!

      I found any soap grated into my mixture, including Kirks pure Castile and Ivory adds some suds. Dove suds up in my hand soap formula. A few pumps of my cheap Equate liquid soap from Walmart, added to my homemade soap for dishes also adds a few suds. Sals suds is very expensive.

    • @2aharvey
      @2aharvey หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@lindadechow3703 you can buy Sal Suds from Dr. Bronner or vita cost or lucky vitamin in the gallon size for around $50. This is a concentrated detergent and I cup makes 1 gallon of laundry detergent. I can't buy 16 gallons of laundry detergent for $50. I dissolve 1 cup of washing soda in boiling water and then dilute with filtered water until I have 14-15 cups and lastly I add the 1 C Dr Bronner Sal Suds. Works like a charm on grease and grime. You can scent it with oils if you want I do not find that necessary since Sal Suds has a pleasing piney scent. Washing soda is another excellent thickener. The laundry soap works in HE washer too!

    I had a go at your recipe since the liquid gel soap I've been making seems to leave a film and water spots behind, which, I think, is due to the Fels Naptha soap. Through researching since making it the first time, I've learned that soap is quite different than detergent. I didn't have kosher salt on hand because I use pink Himalayan salt. I used NOW organic vegetable glycerin as my thickening agent and am presently waiting for it to cool and thicken. I figured it would accomplish the same purpose as kosher salt as it's what I used to thicken the liquid dish gel. Thank you for sharing.

Then I made it again, and this time I added everything while the water was still warm in the pot, and then transferred it to my dish soap, container, it gelled nicely and stayed thick for a few days, but halfway into the week the soap started to separate. Hi Kari! So in the blog post I explain more about this. So there is a myth with Sodium Laureth Sulfate. It becomes toxic because of the way it's processed - a toxic by-product is created in the processing. Dr. Bronner's uses a process that ensures there isn't that toxic byproduct. I have a link with more information in the blog post.

    How is kosher salt processed? I'm hearing there is a lot of broken down waste plastic in sea salt (pollution). How can we avoid plastics in salt?

    • @MyMerryMessyGermanLife
      @MyMerryMessyGermanLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh I hadn't heard that! That's something I'd have to look into. I would look at the company who makes the salt and see if they have information on how it's made. I'm pretty sure kosher salt comes from mines and not the sea.

    QUESTION: Since Sal Suds are soooo expensive, can I use Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap instead?

    • @MyMerryMessyGermanLife
      @MyMerryMessyGermanLife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could but it’s not good for washing dishes. It doesn’t side up well at all and it leaves an oily film on the dishes. So what might work well is to use another brand that’s just pure, concentrated detergent.

    • @MyMerryMessyGermanLife

      Hi! No, Borax does not have any soap in it so it wouldn’t be a good replacement. Castile Soap can work, but be aware that it leaves an oily residue on the dishes and it doesn’t suds up at all - no bubbles.
